@Mseddy I’m 32 weeks (+3) today! Well done on expressing the colostrum, you should be proud! Today is your due date isn’t it? Is baby here?

@loulamay how are you getting on? Not long for you now either!

I had my scan yesterday which confirmed no placenta previa, which is great, so I am not one of the 0.5% who still have a low lying placenta at their due date, but it did confirm I am one of the 1% who have polyhydramnios (too much amniotic fluid) which has been stressing me out. It’s mild, only 1cm over, but that’s me back under the consultant instead of the midwife and I’ll be getting a gestational diabetes test next week. They didn’t say much about it at the hospital and google is scary but I’m seeing the consultant tomorrow so hopefully will know more then.

kikisparks · 08/09/2021 09:47

Should say otherwise baby looked all good at the scan and is measuring right on track.

loulamay · 08/09/2021 11:40

oh @kikisparks why does it feel like there's always something to keep us awake at night! We found out at the last scan that I have velamentous cord insertion so of course that has been worrying me too, although THEY don't seem too worried. The good news is that my anterior placenta has also moved up a bit higher but I think I will still have a c-section because of this cord issue now. I'm 35 weeks and have another scan on Monday. She's growing really well though and had moved up to the 70th percentile at 32 weeks and she's also still really active so hopefully she can bake for a few more weeks.

Good luck with your scan and GTT! It really isn't too bad :-)

kikisparks · 08/09/2021 11:47

Oh @loulamay I’m sorry to hear you’ve had something come up at a scan too- if the professionals aren’t worried I agree you should try not to as well, but it’s much easier said than done and I don’t really manage to take my own advice on that! That’s fab she’s growing so well and so active! Good luck for your scan on Monday hope it all goes smoothly.

loulamay · 09/09/2021 16:12

@kikisparks how did it go with the consultant?

kikisparks · 09/09/2021 17:32

Hi @loulamay thanks for asking, I’m only just home as I’ve been in the hospital for nearly 4 hours! First I saw the midwife for bloods and urine check and blood pressure and that was all fine. Then the consultant appointment was a bit disappointing as he wasn’t very reassuring, he just kept saying it’s not normal so it might be gestational diabetes but that in 50% of cases they don’t find a cause. But I’ve got another scan in 4 weeks to see if it’s gone down and I’m just trying to put it out of my mind (other than going for the GTT).

I mentioned my breathlessness and my heart pounding to him which I’ve told medical professionals throughout and the midwives a few weeks ago thought it might be iron but my iron was fine. He said he wanted to send me for an ECG. So I went for the ECG and first they monitored the baby for 20 mins which was all good, but the midwife noticed some contractions on the scan so after that she felt my stomach for a while and said I was having Braxton hicks (but I don’t feel them). Then I was waiting ages then had to get more bloods for my thyroid and blood salts to be checked then finally had the ECG which was fine but they’ve decided to put me on a 24 hour heart monitor and do a heart scan! And then I nearly had to see a registrar for the braxton hicks but then they changed their mind. All seems a bit crazy for some breathlessness and heart pounding sometimes but I suppose better safe than sorry! I do think the NHS are amazing and the midwife was so lovely, and the doctor who did the ECG was really nice, so it wasn’t an unpleasant experience I was just so hot and sweaty Blush

Let us know how the scan on Monday goes.

kikisparks · 14/09/2021 15:15

@loulamay how was the scan?

loulamay · 14/09/2021 15:38

@ kikisparks It was fine! Still got the same issue with the cord but it's only really a concern if I have a vaginal birth, so c-section is booked in for three weeks tomorrow! Can't believe we're at this point!

Sorry I didn't reply - your hospital trip sounded terrible! How are you feeling now?

kikisparks · 14/09/2021 15:57

@loulamay glad it was all good and how exciting to have a definite date of arrival! Hope it’s not too disappointing for you that a vaginal birth isn’t an option. Personally I’m happy either way, whatever needs to happen to get her out safely. I’ve heard planned C sections can be very calm and it’s great you’ll be able to be prepared.

I’m feeling ok thanks, I was a bit anxious for a while afterwards as up until now I’ve had very little intervention and now it seems there’s loads of intervention! But my heart was pounding again today when I was just doing nothing so it’s probably good to have it checked.

loulamay · 14/09/2021 16:20

No, not disappointed at all. Actually almost prefer the idea! So it’s worked out fine. Just hope I don’t go into labour before the date now!

Strange about your heart, bless you. I know it would be working harder during pregnancy but it’s good to get it checked out. Has this happened to you before?

kikisparks · 14/09/2021 19:05

@loulamay that’s great that it’s an outcome you’re happy with Smile

I’ve never had heart issues before or any issues really apart from endometriosis. I do wonder if the pounding heart and breathlessness are caused by anxiety though.

loulamay · 14/09/2021 20:09

Yes, they could be. My Dad has arrhythmia and it’s sometimes brought on by stress. Poor you! When do you see a cardiologist? I think it’s great that they’re going to check it out. Keep me posted!

Mseddy · 21/09/2021 23:25

Hey guys. Sorry I've been in a total bubble!! I had my little girl on 3/9 and I am so in love!! We've named her Alma. Labour was interesting!! But I'll update about that once both your little ones are here! Not long to go now!!

@kikisparks sorry you've been having problems! Hope you are feeling better and all is well with baba!

@loulamay exciting that you have a date!!

kikisparks · 22/09/2021 08:37

@Mseddy aaahh congratulations!!! Alma is a gorgeous name. So thrilled for you!

@loulamay I’m not sure when I’ll see the cardiologist, they said they’ll send me out a letter. I had the GTT and I don’t have diabetes so just waiting to hear further other than the scan in a couple of weeks. Think I’ll pack my hospital bag this weekend!

loulamay · 22/09/2021 12:52

@Mseddy I also love the name!! Well done you! Any tips for the first couple of weeks, please feel free to send them over haha!

@kikisparks good news on the GTT!

loulamay · 15/10/2021 14:27

Hi @kikisparks and @Mseddy !

Hope you're both doing great. We are also in a love bubble here - Amelie River Walker was born happy and healthy at 09:48 on the 6th October. Can't believe she's over a week old already!

It's been pretty amazing so far but with a couple of hormone crashes, I think when my milk came in, I'm trying to be good and let my c section wound heal but it's hard because I'm used to being so active! She is just so lovely though - I know every parent thinks that about their child but after all we've ben through it feels so magical that she's here.

How long do you have to go @Kikisparks?

x

Mseddy · 16/10/2021 05:49

@loulamay congratulations!! So happy for you. Isn't it just the most amazing feeling in the whole world?! Beautiful name! The whole thing is magical. I'd go through the traumatic birth 10 times over to have her here. Enjoy her x

kikisparks · 18/10/2021 09:04

Congratulations @loulamay! Amazing news, I’m so delighted for you! Beautiful name. Hope you heal quickly from your C section and take it as easy as you can.

I’m 38 weeks now, induction booked for 40 weeks. I’ve been a bit anxious as I had an episode of reduced movements last week. We went in and baby was kicking away whilst the monitor was on and the result from the monitoring was great but we got offered the next available induction anyway because I was over 37 weeks. I was going to go for it but baby moved loads that night and then we had a scan in the morning that showed she was doing fabulously, great supply of blood to the cord etc so we spoke to another consultant who said they wouldn’t push for induction and basically swayed us to waiting and continuing to monitor movements. I’ve been really paranoid about them though and DH and I are in agreement that if I’m ever not happy with them, we’ll just go in and get the next available induction they can offer. Movements have been good ever since though, so far.

In addition to this due to palpitations earlier in pregnancy I had an ECG which was fine but was also referred for a heart scan. The scan was mostly fine but showed up one area that the sonographer marked as being slow, which was a bit alarming. I spoke to the cardiologist and he said he wasn’t concerned because the overall function of my heart was good but he said he’d speak to the obstetric-cardiologists just to be sure. Then he phoned me back and said although he still doesn’t think it’s concerning the obstetric cardiology team want to be 100% happy with my heart before I go into Labour so he asked me to come for another ECG today then an examination and consultation with an obstetric cardiologist and then I’m to get a 24 hour heart monitor fitted tomorrow. I’m not hugely worried about my heart as, as I told him, the palpitations stopped a few weeks ago, it’s just that one note on the scan that scared me a bit. I feel it’s really been one medical thing after the other since 32 weeks and it’s a bit exhausting. But hopefully I’ll get reassurance with these further tests.

In amazing news though the polyhydramnios (extra amniotic fluid) is gone so there’s no longer that risk factor for baby Smile just can’t wait until she’s here safely.

loulamay · 21/10/2021 10:48

@kikisparks so good that you're in the best hands and everything is getting checked out! Awesome about the amniotic fluid, that must be a weight off your mind!

We'll be thinking of you! We're two weeks in now and I don't think anything can prepare you for the first stretch, although I feel like we're kind of finding our groove a little plus I'm healing well from my section which is great. Took the prom out on my own for the first time yesterday!

Sending lots of love - she'll be here in no time! X

kikisparks · 21/10/2021 11:29

@loulamay thanks! The cardiac appointment went fine they think my heart is ok subject to the results of the 24 hour monitor I wore on Tuesday- they said no news is good news so hopefully I won’t hear further and then I just have to have one final ECG after the baby is born.

Glad you’re finding your groove a bit and healing from your section. I have read so many books and resources but I know nothing is going to prepare me for the reality! Hope you’re able to get some sleep and hopefully there will be decent enough weather to get out with the pram as much as you’d like to. I’m a bit scared of my pram, it’s lovely looking and sturdy but seems so massive and hard to put up and down, hopefully I’ll learn to manage it!

@Mseddy hope parenting is going well for you too Smile

kikisparks · 02/11/2021 09:35

Hi @loulamay and @Mseddy hope you’re both doing well with your little ones!

My baby daughter arrived on 24 October by emergency c section after an induction due to reduced movements caused hyperstimulation, it was fairly traumatic but baby is safe and well and I’m recovering well albeit finding I can get a bit dizzy and faint at times. So absolutely in love with this little one and it’s all worth it!

How have the first few weeks been for you both? Also would love to hear your birth stories if you want to share.

loulamay · 02/11/2021 11:54

Ah yay!!! I was just thinking about you yesterday! Does she have a name? So sorry that your birth was traumatic - do they know what's causing your dizziness?

First few weeks are a combination of survival and joy I would say hahaha. I've had some issues with feeding too - thrush and then mastitis on my left boob so we are actually doing combination bottle feeding now with whatever breast milk I can express and then topping up with formula. She's putting on weight and seems happy and I am much happier not going through the pain so it's working for us. I am finding that 'what works for us' is something that we just have to discover as we go along, but at the beginning, I think I was comparing myself too much to the expectations of others and that was making me tearful and upset. The hormones didn't help either!

My birth story was pretty calm because we had a planned c section but I am glad we did because with my placenta issues (velamentous cord insertion and the accessory lobe thing) they said it could have been very risky if we'd gone with a vaginal birth. I think we lucked out as well with a really lovely experienced surgeon - she was in and out in about 25 minutes even with the placenta issues to deal with. OH said he tried not to listen too much but that they were definitely dealing with something after Amelie was out - suspect there could have been some blood loss had we not gone with the surgery that could have been quite worrying.

Recovery from the section has been ok and I haven't had any issues with the wound, but I do think it takes longer than vaginal and it's been quite frustrating not being able to drive!

Wanted to just drop in here some things that have been super helpful so far:

My Boppy nursing pillow has been amazing
We are using a Baby Brezza machine for the formula, which although expensive is just SO good for the middle of the nights
We also have a portable white noise machine that she loves (not sure if I can link here: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01D50RZQI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?psc=1)&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

Lots of love to you both!

Mseddy · 03/11/2021 08:46

@kikisparks congratulations! How are you getting on with your first week?

We are all good here. Alma is 9 weeks old on Friday, no idea where the time has gone!! She's going through some pretty dig development leaps at the moment so we've had some tough days, but god the smiles make it all worth it!

Birth wise was pretty traumatic for me! I was induced for reduced movements/ivf dates. I ended up with painfully contractions but they stayed 5mins apart and I didn't get past 1cm. She had a bit of a dodgy CTG after about 3 hours of them contractions. The Dr said I wasn't in labour but she wanted to try and break my waters even though I was only 1cm as it might kick labour off.
She broke my waters and said I was only just 1cm, 45 minutes later she was born!!! So it was very very fast and I had a huge bleed after. But overall it wasn't the worst experience in the world.

How was your birth?

@loulamay how are you getting on?

kikisparks · 06/11/2021 12:54

@loulamay yes we named her Thea Smile I think the dizziness was from not eating enough and doing too much, if I eat and take it easy I seem to be fine, my iron levels were good so it was probably low blood pressure (I lost a lot of blood).

Survival and joy sums up how I feel now too! I was severely overwhelmed the first week but starting to hit a rhythm now, albeit a very sleep deprived one! Sorry about your feeding issues, sounds very sore, hope your pain is getting relieved. We’ve had issues feeding too, Thea can’t latch due to tongue tie and my milk was very delayed coming in and low supply so like you I’ve been combi feeding with expressed milk and formula. I had a lot of tears about this in the early days but she’s putting on weight and is getting some of my milk so I’m doing the best I can and I think that’s enough. We’re waiting for an ENT appointment for the tongue tie snip so hopefully that will help me to try breastfeeding again but if it doesn’t work then I know I tried.

I’m glad your c section was nice and calm and sounds like it was definitely the safest choice. Glad your recovery is going well, mine is too, just have to take it easy and DH is doing all the housework. Thank you for the tips on your must have items!

@Mseddy the first week was such a sharp learning curve and I was crying every day about the breast feeding issues but the second week has been much better. I’m just dreading DH going back to work next week as he’s been such a hands on dad and a huge help.

That’s so lovely you’re getting smiles from Alma, but sorry there have been tough times. 9 weeks already wow!

I was induced for reduced movements too! Sorry your birth was so traumatic, I feel the same about mine, I think it’s the difference of the reality compared to my expectations. Sorry about your huge bleed too. Hope you have healed and recovered well? I didn’t know they could break waters at 1cm but it obviously worked!

My birth was really fast as well, went into labour after one pessary and was having back to back agonising contractions that the gas and air wasn’t touching with at most 30-60 seconds in between them, was projectile vomiting until they gave me an anti emetic and Thea was in distress on the trace. I went from 4 to 9cm dilated within half an hour and the obstetrician was concerned about the baby’s heart rate so we went to theatre for either forceps or a c section. In theatre her heart rate dropped right down and they nearly knocked me out with a general but it came back up enough that I could stay awake with the epidural. I had a c section but she had to get yanked out of me with forceps and then resuscitated and I didn’t get to see her for 5-10 minutes although my husband got to see her after a minute. The epidural went too high so even though I got skin to skin in recovery I couldn’t feel anything and I was scared to hold her as I couldn’t feel her as my hands were too numb. Then when I was left alone with her during the night she choked on mucus and they had to rush her away again. But she’s all good now and I’m getting lots of bonding time! She’s really the most amazing thing, I’m in awe. I think my birth wasn’t the worst in the world but it affected me quite a lot especially the first week. I’m trying to focus now on enjoying her and not sweating the things that don’t go to plan.

How long do you both have on maternity leave? I’m taking a year but probably going back full time and the nurseries have big waiting lists so I’ll need to put in an application soon.

Mseddy · 22/12/2021 19:40

Hey guys. How is everyone getting on? Just wanted to pop on and say Happy Christmas to everyone!

Still think about you @lepatz hope things are going OK xx
