Hi all,

I was wondering if someone on here could provide some advice based on your experience ... sorry this is a long post!

I was on here last month under the name “gem1990”. I had my ultrasound today as well as my follow up appointment with the gynae...
This has left me with more questions than answers! My ultrasounds showed up everything was fine as did my bloods except my LH levels were slightly high so from that has diagnosed mild PCOS but did not fill me with confidence! Especially as the bloods were done at CD26 but I have a period every 4months! The dr told me there was nothing he can do and has sent me back to the gp to advise if they can do anything! I feel in limbo land and have no idea what is going on or what to do next but they won’t investigate further! Any advice on what to do next and how you got diagnosed would be great. Desperate to ttc and feel like I am letting my husband down xxx

Alicejj8x · 15/01/2018 20:53

I would push for tablets to help you!!
If they have said you have mild PCOs they need to give you something for this!!

It took me a while to get to where I am now but finally on metformin then Clomid which is the route I think they should put you on? Especially as your periods are every 4 months it shows your probably not ovulating or ovulating as often as you should. My periods are once every 3 months.

I would push for tablets!! They can't leave you especially if you've been said to have mild Pcos!!

Don't feel like you're letting him down and don't be to hard on yourself! Easier said than done I get that xxxx

Hi Intrigued2018, your story sounds like mine last year.. I went to the GP with non-existent periods after DP and I had been TTC for about 9 months. I had initial bloods done, then I was referred for my first ultrasound and transvaginal scan. The scans showed I have 12+ follicles in each ovary, which is one of the symptoms that make up the PCOS diagnosis (the other being weight gain, hair growth, acne, irregular periods and/or non-ovulation).

After those scans, my next GP visit was spectacularly unhelpful, he just didn't know enough about the scan results or PCOS to be able to help me at all. I sat in my car and cried afford 45 minutes, then I wrote a letter of complaint to the practice manager, which made me feel much better.
After that I was referred to the PCOS clinic and the infertility clinic at my local hospital, which after more bloods, and a HyCoSy to check my tubes weren't blocked, I was put on metformin, and two months later started on clomid, which I am currently still taking while they work out what dose (if any) will help me ovulate.
The Metformin is a standard prescription for PCOS (although it was originally designed for treating diabetes). While the metformin hasn't regulated my periods, it does with some women and it has helped alot with other PCOS symptoms.
Don't give up, if you have been given a PCOS diagnosis then there are things you can do...although prepare yuu self for every doctor to tell you to loose weight, irrespective of your current BMI, height, weight or lifestyle!

intrigued2018 · 15/01/2018 21:12

Thanks Alice, will speak to my GP tomorrow and push for tablets. I was just told nothing they can do and it’s just one of those things I have to live with... which feels earth shattering when it impacts ttc!

It just feels like they don’t want to help and asthough it’s a constant fight. They just fob me off as my ultrasound is normal! Are you manage this via the NHS? Tempted to speak to a fertility clinic.

We will get there it just feels like it’s a condition we all have to fight out corner so we can have our own little ones! Xxx

intrigued2018 · 15/01/2018 21:19

Thank you also Mermaid... it seems like it is going to be a tough year especially as friends have started announcing they are expecting this year and there are lots of young babies in the family!

The dr tried to say it was due to being stressed in personal life, doing too much exercise and maybe being overweight... my BMI is 24, I am the less stressed I have ever been and only do two 5km runs a week! My ovaries were completely normal, which sounds unusual for PCOS?

Let’s hope the GP helps tomorrow

Fingers crossed Clomid works for you and you get a bfp soon! Xxx

Alicejj8x · 15/01/2018 21:28

Yeah that's awful for them
To say there's nothing they can do!! I know what you mean when ttc is all that's on your mind and to be told that must of been awful.
I saw you wrote you had no follicles on your ovaries and they looked fine? I had a few ultrasounds done and not one expect my last one at the fertility clinic picked up pcos! Could you push for another scan??

Yes mine is al through the NHS and the fertility clinic at my local hospital so all NHS although at one point I did contemplate going private!! As it took forever to get to where I am now! Just hoping I can get my BFP soon like I hope you do too

Let me know what your GP says but don't give up you need to be tough with them or they just fob you off and push you to the end of there schedules.

I hope it works well keep us updated xx

intrigued2018 · 15/01/2018 22:12

It does feel like we are fighting something that will never get resolved.

I will let you know once I have spoken with the GP and decide what to do from there. Reassuring to know they don’t always pick up follicles, dr seemed to think it’s common for people not to. I guess they come and go so who knows!

Have you ever tried Inofolic?

Fingers crossed for us all and bfp’s Xxx

MermaidTail7 · 15/01/2018 22:17

Just to say Intrigued that PCOS is diagnosed through a collection of symptoms, so you don't have to have all of them in a textbook fashion to have PCOS... I do know someone who had PCOS, but did not have the multiple follicles in scans, they just had all the other symptoms...

SLady · 16/01/2018 10:05

Thank you holly :)

Sorry to butt in, intrigued don't give up. It's true that there is nothing they can do for your pcos but there is so much they can do to help you when TTC. Go back to the GP and request to be referred to the fertility clinic at your local hospital. Good luck!

intrigued2018 · 16/01/2018 10:27

Thanks all, I have spoken with the GP this morning. He is writing to the fertility clinic to see if they can help as our local nhs only consider you once you’ve been trying for two years even though my periods are every 4months.

If the fertility clinic can’t help yet, the GP has said they will put me on metformin then me & dh have decided we will just go private to get the help. At least there is a plan now other than just thinking there is nothing that can be done!

I hope everything is going well for you Slady 😀😀😀 xxx

SLady · 16/01/2018 12:49

Excellent intrigued sounds like a very good plan!

Thanks so much Smile

AmyL88 · 17/01/2018 10:37

@SLady OMG Congratulations...So happy for you, I havent been back and read all the posts i just saw your test pic! Sending the biggest hug!

Sorry i have been MIA for a month, i needed to take some time out so had a break in December. Now back on my last clomid cycle so I am optimistic (again). xx

SLady · 17/01/2018 12:06

Thanks so much Amy
I have been thinking about you and how you've been getting on. I really hope your break helped and sending so much luck to you for your last round! I got my bfp round 6 and Sunny got hers on her last round of clomid so keep up the optimism... it can happen!! GOOD LUCK xxx

AmyL88 · 17/01/2018 12:48

That's the kind of positive stories I need to hear Smile I didn't realise Sunny had her BFP too...how exciting! I am feeling much more optimistic about this year and what it will bring. I have an appointment with the Consultant in Feb to see what the next steps will be. I am hoping he will allow me a couple more cycles with Clomid but we shall see!

How are you feeling now @SLady? Has it even sunk in yet! I am so bloody chuffed for you!

Alicejj8x · 18/01/2018 13:47

I haven't started Clomid yet but I'm just curious what happens if Clomid doesn't work what's the next step?

HollyWollyDooDah · 18/01/2018 20:03

Have my fertility nurse appt tomorrow as a follow up from my bloods
Any advice on what to ask for/discuss
Ie meds etc

HollyWollyDooDah · 19/01/2018 18:54

So back from my appt
Basically she said I’ve got to lose weight
I have to lose 3st 9 before they’ll put me on meds
That will bring my bmi down to 29.9

My question is if I were to go private would this still stand?

ConfusionIsNothingNew · 19/01/2018 19:40

Hi Holly, my bmi is well over 30 and I got metformin and Clomid privately without any issues. I'm not sure if that was just my doc or if that's because it was private?

So, round 2 of 100mg of Clomid and I got a really strong positive opk today on CD22! Last month it was on CD14 so I've no idea why on earth it's so late this month, argh!

SLady · 22/01/2018 10:44

Thanks Amy :)
I was prescribed two more rounds (so 8 in total) so they might let you carry on with Clomid a bit longer. Wishing you all lots of luck for this cycle xx

AmyL88 · 23/01/2018 12:30

@HollyWollyDooDah My BMI was 29.9 at my consultants appointment and even though they prescribed me clomid I still want to lose about 3 stone to be a healthy weight. I believe weight has a a lot to do with conceiving with PCOS as i have a 5 year old who was conceived naturally, only difference i was 2 stone lighter!!! Its so tough isnt it, are you going to look at going private for the prescription?

@ConfusionIsNothingNew CD 22 is still good, I do believe clomid makes you ovulate later. Did you take them on CD 2 - 6?

I am on CD9 and feeling positive after taking a break in December. Gong to aim to DTD every other day running up to a positive OPK and then DTD as much as i can! haha Oh the romance in TTC!

ConfusionIsNothingNew · 23/01/2018 18:45

Hi Amy, yes this was the first month I took them on CD 2-6, previously I'd taken it on days 1-5 so not sure if that's why ovulation was a week later this time.

You're so right about TTCing and the lack of romance! DH just gets told he needs to DTD and doesn't get much of a say in it lol.

HollyWollyDooDah · 23/01/2018 22:31

I’m not sure
Realistically the next couple of months are going to be so busy I probably won’t have chance to find a private clinic so will lose weight during that time and see how it goes
I’m only 4 Kgs heavier than when I conceived dd1 and have been down to that weight in the last year whilst ttc but nothing happened
I wish there was a switch that would just start ovulation!

MermaidTail7 · 25/01/2018 11:24

Quick update ladies... It looks like SLady was right and that 150mg clomid was the magic dose... Just had my day 12 scan and have one 13mm follicle which the nurse was pretty positive about. I'm trying to contain my exitement (and not get my hopes up) but after five months of weekly scans where I've not had any results at all other than 'ooh look, there's your polycystic ovaries', I'm just so happy that the clomid has finally worked!

AmyL88 · 25/01/2018 14:46

@MermaidTail Ah amazing news...make sure you get BD'ing!! :-) Are you going back next week for a scan to see you have ovulated?
