4 high quality embryos at day 3 - what should I expect at day 5?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 11/10/2017 19:45

Mid way through our first cycle of IVF. They retrieved 6 eggs and 4 fertilised. The embryologist called me on day 3 and said all 4 embryos were high quality (at least 10 cells and minimal fragmentation) and so they could keep them until day 5 or 6. I am due an update tomorrow am and probably ET tomorrow afternoon or Friday (day 5 or 6) and just trying to set my expectations for the news tomorrow. How many usually die between day 3 and 5? If we do have at least one left, what are my chances of it sticking? I've gotten so pessimistic that I've sort of ruled out it working. Should I assume it's not doing to work or should I be more hopeful?

Jojo I missed that sorry. A boy, so marvellous.,

Rememberallball · 03/12/2017 23:08

Thanks Goodluck, useful to know prices at the ‘big’ hospitals so I’ve something to compare local units to. I had read £400 somewhere but that was a year or two back. Luckily we have a few private hospitals round this area so could be able to go to one of a number!!

Twickerhun · 04/12/2017 08:43

Remember I had ivf at an overseas clinic in Czech Republic. For any big procedures or tests it’s cheaper to get cheap flights out there and pay for a nights accommodation than to have the procedure here. Just a thought.

JoJoSM2 · 04/12/2017 13:10

Remember, I never had an HSG so can’t recommend. I’m sorry about your DM. So much stress in one go for you!

Otters, I’m so jealous that you’re symptom free. My symptoms are getting better, ie the afternoon/evening sickness and heartburn is getting a bit milder but I did throw up this weekend so not out of the woods yet.

Twickers, sorry about the redundancies coming up. It’s such bad timing! We had lots of redundancies at work. I’ve managed to avoid it but will have to go down to just 2 days a week. It was very stressful for months with the redundancies looming and ivf going on but worked out in the end. I hope it works out for you too. And actually, employers might be reluctant to make sb pregnant redundant as it could make them easier to sue. So fingers crossed it works out to your advantage!

Goodluck, no DC or DSC here. It was my first bfp so it’s all new to us. The report said Sex: Male but for other stuff it was expressed as probability. For example, it said that for my age the risk of Downs is 1:180 but based on the test it’s 1:10,000.

otters2017 · 04/12/2017 14:25

Remember - I didn't have a hsg either so can't recommend.

Goodluck - when will you get your results? I'm also curious to know if it's a boy or girl for you!

Jojo - I hope being symptom free isn't a bad sign. It's difficult not to worry and wonder if everything is ok. I do feel incredibly lucky though. We didn't think we would succeed first time round as you read so much about it takes 3 goes on average. We've all done well to get to where we are. Just hope it continues. I really can't wait for the next scan! Hope you feel better soon. Placenta should be kicking in so you should feel much better!

Twicker - how are you feeling?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 04/12/2017 14:29

Thanks JoJo. Great to hear they express it in such detail. I sort of want to know what they have based their "high risk" "low risk" result on. Based on when you got your results, I should get mine on Wednesday. Seriously worried re DS, Edwards etc due to my age. Stupidly looked at the ante-natal tests thread on here last night which made me feel worse!

Just had my booking appointment at UCLH. Very thorough. Flagged up as high risk for numerous reasons (2 previous c-sections, age over 40, possible heart problem I inherited from my dad and a letz procedure I had 5 years ago) so I will have a number of other consultant appointments and referrals. Oddly enough, she said that if the IVF was straightforward and worked first go then that in itself isn't a risk factor. Anyhow, looks like the next new months will be very busy.

Twicker, are you still feeling better? Otters, look like we've gotten off quite likely in terms of morning sickness/feeling rough.

Remember, hope you are ok. Did you make any decisions re the HSG?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 04/12/2017 14:32

Otters, re symptoms, I had hardly any sickness and felt fine through both my previous pregnancies, and have been ok through this one too. Feeling fine definitely isn't a sign something is wrong. Just seems to affect people differently.

OP posts:
JoJoSM2 · 04/12/2017 18:31

Goodluck, the results are based on fetal DNA. So my report says that 2.8% of DNA found in the blood was from the baby and it was all healthy without and trisomies or deletions. They don’t test every single pair of chromosomes but if there were problems with other chromosomes, then it would have ended in miscarriage early on.

JoJoSM2 · 04/12/2017 18:34
  • I mean like other trisomies or missing chromosomes. Not translocation and other bits that are compatible with life.
otters2017 · 04/12/2017 21:33

Goodluck - sounds like a very thorough appointment. I had a LLETZ in June so wonder if that will make a difference. Not seeing my midwife for another 2 weeks. I'm grateful not to have symptoms but I can't help worrying. Tbh I feel incredibly grateful and lucky to be in this position.

Jojo - that's useful to know about the results. I can't wait for my harmony test!

Goodluckjonathan76 · 05/12/2017 13:27

Otters, I think the LLETZ can causes issues with a shorter cervix/scarring etc. They checked this as one of the multiple checks we had at CRGH and it wasn't an issue.

JoJo, I am really panicking about the results. Checking my phone every 2 minutes. I have a horrible sick feeling. Were you like this or just me/ Today is 7 days past the test, which was last Tuesday at midday, so could be a little early. Horrid waiting, I'm imagining all sorts.

OP posts:
Twickerhun · 05/12/2017 13:59

Waiting is so hard through early pregnancy, sympathies Goodluck. Hope you have good news soon

Goodluckjonathan76 · 05/12/2017 15:25

It is Twickers. I suddenly seem overcome with anxiety, all cold and shaky and doubting everything. Not sure if it's just the results or something else. Had a massive row with DH over the weekend which didn't help. We always always row about holiday and him agreeing arrangements with his ex (his ex always seems to get priority in everything). Blended families are hard and it's only going to get harder with another one in the mix. Really starting to have doubts about it all.

OP posts:
Twickerhun · 05/12/2017 15:47

Goodluck we have step child issues over holidays. Every summer and Christmas are ruined by the ex wife being unable to negotiate or communicate. It’s tough. Your own child changes stuff but in my experience not for the worse.

Twickerhun · 05/12/2017 15:53

Ps I’m wondering given we are now as far along as we are if we should move this chat from infertility? Just a thought

JoJoSM2 · 05/12/2017 16:13

Goodluck, sounds like a tough situation with DH! Have you managed to resolve it or is it still an issue?

I’m sorry you’re so stressed out. I was a bit stressed out but I kept on repeating to myself that stressing won’t change the result and waiting will feel even longer if I’m constantly thinking about it. Somehow, I managed to chill out.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for your all-singing, all-dancing results soon Smile

Twickers, are you on the meds every day? How are you feeling? Also, I’m happy to move elsewhere.

Otters, 10 more days till you next see your little one! Are you counting down yet?

What are your plans for NYE ladies?

Rememberallball · 05/12/2017 18:27

Meant to update yesterday ladies but got caught up in everything going on here!!

DM doing better but still very poorly on 3 different antibiotics and in a lot of pain. The infection in her lungs has been so bad that they’ve been bleeding so she’s coughing up a lot. The consultant she has been allocated to was my DF respiratory specialist and we really had confidence in him with DF so that’s reassuring and also gives us confidence in her care going forward!!

Also had another call from Cyprus - consultant had asked his accounts department and senior managers what they could to to assist us with costs if we go for another cycle - they have come back to us with a 50% discount on treatment costs though hotel and flights will be about the same - this means total costs are going to be in the region of €4200 inclusive - this means we can plan to go out around Easter next year rather than wait till the height of summer!!

Twickerhun · 05/12/2017 19:41

Remember that’s great news about Cyprus but so sorry about your DM, hope the medics look after her well.

Goodluckjonathan76 · 05/12/2017 22:38

So sorry to hear about your DM Remember. Very trying times for you. Keeping everything crossed for her.

Great news re the quote from Cyprus though! That's a really good discount.

JoJo, Twickers, DH and I had another row this evening. I felt on edge all day and made a comment about him being late back from work which set him off. Just tetchy waiting for these results and annoyed he didn't bother to call or text me the whole day, or come home on time, to ask if I had heard!

Twickers, that's bad news that DH and I having a child isn't going to change things. I was worried it wouldn't, in fact, I think it may make DH overcompensate with his DCs all the more. Urggh, such a nightmare.

JoJo, that was a good mind set for the results. You can't change anything. I will hopefully hear tomorrow which means another day on edge!

As for NYE, my friend is over from San Fransisco and having a house party. Would love to go, esp as DSs are sadly away with their dad, but not sure I can leave DH and DSCs at home alone. My DM is also planning to come up, part of the reason we are thinking of telling her in the next week or so. We are literally too scared of her to give the news in person! She is likely to be very disapproving so we want to tell her when she is at a couple of hundred miles away then give her a week or two before we see her at NYE to get over the shock. God only knows what she is going to say. No way will we tell her we conceived through IVF as she's bound to have a few comments about that as well! What is everyone else doing for Christmas and NYE?

otters2017 · 06/12/2017 00:08

Wow you lot have been chatty today! Been busy all day then went out for dinner with friends. A late weeknight but there's quite a few of these in December!

Goodluck - I can only imagine the nerves waiting for the results. Hope you've made up after your row with DH. Blended families are definitely difficult even at the best of times

Twicker - happy to move to a different board as long as I know where to find you guys! How are you feeling ?

Jojo - I've been trying to keep the same mind set of nothing I can do now can change the outcome but I still go through stages of worry. Definitely better now than the beginning but will be a relief if scan is good. Definitely counting down! So pleased it's December as there's quite a bit going on so time is flying by

Remember - good news about the discount. 50% is good going. Sorry to hear about your DM. Really hope she gets better soon

Rememberallball · 06/12/2017 09:40

Thanks all for the good wishes - another trip to hospital today to see OT and consultant to make plans going forward. DM told DSD (adult) that she thinks she’s coming home on Friday - though that’s not what the nurses said on the phone!!

NYE is going to be quiet in our house - just the 3 of us (we live with DM) and I’m working New Year so we’ll probably have dinner then head to bed to watch the fireworks from Edinburgh

Goodluckjonathan76 · 06/12/2017 15:28

Hi all

Still no results. I called the Birth Centre at lunch time and they told me my results were due back between 5th and 7th December and so I should hear today or tomorrow, which made me all the more apprehensive as it could be anytime. JoJo, what time did you get the call from the Birth Centre?

Twickers, Otters, are you doing the Harmony/Panorama? Can understand why some people don't test as such as horrid process so go through. Feels like everything is on hold until I hear either way.

OP posts:
JoJoSM2 · 06/12/2017 18:13

Goodluck, I got my results back at about 4pm on Saturday. There's quite a time difference between California and London so who knows what random times they might send the results back.
I also hope that DM doesn't annoy you too much. Mine didn't seem to be so sure about the whole IVF business and when we had excellent fertilisation rates and embryo quality, she commented that perhaps our genes were alright after all Hmm

Otters, sounds like a party December for you :) Have you been tempted to have any booze?

Remember, great news about the discount. And not long left till the next go. Also, by Easter the weather in Cyprus might be lovely ;)

Twickers, are you feeling better with the meds and passage of time?

We haven't got any plans for NYE but we've got some friends who are pregnant or have little babies so it might be an idea to organize a house party. Not sure that I'll be in the mood, though, after Christmas. We have my family coming over for a few days (7 people) and then DH's family will come on Boxing Day with his mum staying over for a while afterwards. My cleaner is going back home for 3 weeks so I'm in desperate need of sb as it's going to mayhem here!

otters2017 · 06/12/2017 22:32

Goodluck - fingers crossed for good results. Did you hear back today? We're having harmony test next week after much deliberation. Won't get results till after new year though. Not sure how I feel about that!

Jojo - it's going to be quite a party December! I don't usually drink much so I'm not too tempted.

We haven't actually planned NYE! A friend asked yesterday and I thought I'd better think of something! We've been invited to a New Year's Day party so I suspect we will just have a quiet one at home on NYE. Christmas is much busier with family and friends.

9 weeks today which feels like a great milestone. Just want to know that everything is ok. I'm still feeling quite normal so not sure if it's good or bad! I had to see a dentist today and interestingly enough she could tell as my gums have changed!! I have read that online but didn't know it really was a thing. It was a bonus to have free dental treatment for once.

Goodluckjonathan76 · 06/12/2017 22:52

Hi Otters

No, still not heard. Kind of given up in my mind. Awful row with DH this evening an a crisis at school with DS1, so really not good over all and wondering if having a 3rd was a good idea.

Interesting re your gums- I think the body does change very quickly. My tummy felt relatively normal until a few days ok when it seems to expand and now feels quite rounded. Hard to work out what is wind and what is baby!

A quiet NYE sounds very good.
