4 high quality embryos at day 3 - what should I expect at day 5?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 11/10/2017 19:45

Mid way through our first cycle of IVF. They retrieved 6 eggs and 4 fertilised. The embryologist called me on day 3 and said all 4 embryos were high quality (at least 10 cells and minimal fragmentation) and so they could keep them until day 5 or 6. I am due an update tomorrow am and probably ET tomorrow afternoon or Friday (day 5 or 6) and just trying to set my expectations for the news tomorrow. How many usually die between day 3 and 5? If we do have at least one left, what are my chances of it sticking? I've gotten so pessimistic that I've sort of ruled out it working. Should I assume it's not doing to work or should I be more hopeful?

Twickers, good luck with the midwife! I can't imagine how hard it must be to change nappies when you're feeling sick - sounds like a right nightmare!

Goodluck, a bacon-munching veggie Grin I'm a veggie too and have been struggling as I've gone off eggs, beans, pea powder etc. so that has really limited my options, i.e. I'm living off carbs and fat.

Skiing sounds a bit sketchy in the second trimester - would you need to ski with the boys side by side or could they go on their own whilst you're having hot chocolate at the bottom of the slope?

I wish we could go to the Maledives or Mauritius etc but the worry over long-haul flights and Zika is keeping us closer to home. Also, Gran Canaria seems to have proper hospitals so that's good to know. DH will probably go off surfing and mountain biking so I'll need to bring along a few books Wink And hope the weather doesn't disappoint.

Otters, might you do a break before the baby arrives?

Twickers, have you been on hols since you had your LO? I imagine it's probably a bit tricky?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 27/11/2017 14:00

JoJo, when are you doing on holiday?

Re skiing, the boys would be in lessons but I would have to do some skiing with them. We also had a holiday to Crete booked in May half term when I would be 35 weeks! Thankfully, was able to cancel for free. Really don't want to go away so late in pregnancy. Should be going on maternity leave at that time and getting ready to relax!

So glad that our maternity leaves will be over the summer!

Goodluck - wow you might have both panorama and harmony! Good luck with the panorama test tomorrow. It's a bit scary about your friend but I've heard that before as well. I'm trying not to over worry but it's hard!
On the self referral form for me you have to say if it's ivf pregnancy or not and they ask if it's own egg and sperm or donor - mainly for screening things like thalassemia etc if indicated
I'm not sure about skiing in 2nd trimester! We really wanted to go to New York for Christmas but I was worried about traveling and weren't sure about how I'd feel etc and now it's too late as it's too expensive so will have a mini break here. Might consider somewhere next spring but not sure yet. I always have the worry at the back of my mind about what if something goes wrong.
You also have to consider Zika free zones which isn't too bad as we wouldn't really go further than Europe for now. My brother who is expecting their first next match said they won't be traveling with baby to Zika zones until Baby is 3 as apparently there is a small risk to the child's development. First I'd heard of this so will have to research that later.

Jojo - a holiday in gran Canaria sounds fab. When are you going?
I might suggest it to DH as well as a potential option. I like that the hospitals are good there.

Twicker - how did the midwife appointment go? Sorry you're feeling sick and you have to change nappies as well - I'm sure that makes it worse. I've forgotten now but did you have ivf for your little one?

I got a blood form request through the post today so will book to have my bloods done. My NHs scan is now 4th Jan when I will be 13+1. Still waiting to hear from midwife as I assume I will see her before the scan

Twickerhun · 27/11/2017 16:12

Just had the midwife appt. apparently things have changed since we conceived DS by ivf and now ivf pregnancies are an automatic referral to a specialist consultant.

We’ve managed to travel quite a bit with DS when he was little. Before he started moving it was really easy. We travelled to america and did a few European City breaks. We did a weeks skiing when he was 3 months but my tummy muscles didn’t enjoy it!

otters2017 · 27/11/2017 16:41

Twicker - did they say why ivf pregnancies need a specialist consultant? When do you see the consultant ?
Hoping to travel with young baby too but will have to see how things go. Have also heard from family and friends that it's easier before they are walking

Goodluckjonathan76 · 27/11/2017 17:05

Interesting Twickers, hope that doesn't mean they think that they are more high risk?

OP posts:
Twickerhun · 27/11/2017 17:32

I didn’t ask but can only assume that it is higher risk

JoJoSM2 · 27/11/2017 22:43

Twicker, that nice that you'll be under consultant care. I think NICE guidelines recommend that but I'm half surprised that it's actually happening in real life. Will your first appointment be soon?

Also, it's good to know that travelling is more doable before babies start walking. I've always wanted to go to Japan but haven't got round to it - could be a maternity leave idea.

Otters, sounds like it's be great for your brother and you to have babies almost at the same time! It's great to have cousins similar/same age.
We're going to Gran Canaria in the half term in Feb due to me not being able to travel in term time. Have you been to NY before? I don't like it much in winter - very cold and once I literally got snowed in and couldn't fly out for 3 days.

Goodluck, it's good you managed to cancel the Crete holiday. It's a difficult one with the skiing hols, though. Best of luck for tomorrow and let us know how it goes!

Goodluckjonathan76 · 28/11/2017 14:43

Hi all, just updating after scan and panorama test. All went very well. First abdominal scan so we saw the little mite looking very baby like, waving its arms and legs, and listened to the heart beat (175 bpm). Mesuring exactly 9 weeks 3 days, which is exactly where we are. She checked also the placenta, cord, made sure there were no cysts. So, now is just the dreaded wait for the results. She also said to do nuchal fold test but not the blood tests as the results are less accurate and can confuse you. Panorama is way more accurate apparently.

How is everyone else?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 28/11/2017 14:45

Oh, and measuring 2.7cm which is just below 50th centile.

Goodluck that sounds great. So wonderful

otters2017 · 28/11/2017 16:00

Goodluck - that's great news about the scan. Are you going to cancel harmony or still going ahead?

Jojo - it's great to have cousins of a similar age. Plus they can give me info and tips as they are due first. We've been to NY a few times but never in winter which is why I wanted to go. Have heard it's bitterly cold though. Maybe after baby is a little older. Or we could go end of the year next year!
My cousin traveled long haul with a 5 month old and she said it was fine. Much trickier now with her 2 year old!

Feels like I've been pregnant for ages! Time seems to be passing so slowly. Just want to get to our 10w scan and see that everything is ok!

Goodluckjonathan76 · 28/11/2017 16:56

Otters, I am definitely going to cancel harmony. Waste of money doing both.

I also feel like time is dragging. Just trying to focus on one week at a time. Next step for us is getting results which should be next week. Think we will still wait for 12 week scan before we tell people. Have to say, I am now super excited having had the scan. Dying to know if boy or girl. Really don't have a feeling either way, neither does DH.

OP posts:
JoJoSM2 · 28/11/2017 17:03

Goodluck, that's fantastic! I think that's what I'm going to do - get the scan with the nuchal fold but not the bloods.
Are you dreading the wait for the results? I'm more excited to find out if it's a boy or a girl Grin

Otters, how long have you got to wait now?

Twicker, is your sickness getting any better or still a nightmare? I read somewhen that it's meant to get better after 9 or 10 weeks.

Is anyone else thinking about their nursery design? DH already had a look at baby furniture, wallpapers and prams at the weekend. He's on a mission to choose the best pram and getting into the tech specs. I think I'll need to be a bit bossy with regards to the decor or we'll end up with robots, boats and trucks everywhere Wink

Scan booked for 15th dec - ages away!! Really want to tell close friends and family before Christmas so if Harmony scan is ok then we can tell as nhs scan not till 4th Jan.

I want to keep it a surprise but DH is keen to find out gender. We are still debating! Any reason for you lot to want to find out early? I haven't really thought much further in terms of nursery of things to buy. I know it's silly but I feel like I'll jinx things! No nausea or vomiting yet phew. Anyone got any symptoms?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 28/11/2017 18:09

Ah, JoJo, that's so sweet! DH did mention about getting the room ready after Christmas although I said too soon as we will need to do a re-jig with DSD moving into the loft (which is my office!) and baby having her room as lower in the house. Loft is a bit too far away to hear baby, plus is much bigger with an ensuite so will give DSD more privacy. I will be very sad to lose my office though (will make working from home a lot more difficult) so keen to delay as long as possible!

JoJo, I thought the Birth Centre was really good, did you? Love that they email you the images and video of the scan and apparently they call and email the results, even at the weekend, which is fab.

Twickers, I am suffering with sickness too this week. Really hoping that JoJo is right and that it clears up in the next week or so.

Remember, are you still here?

Otters, when is your scan booked for?

OP posts:
JoJoSM2 · 28/11/2017 18:53

Goodluck, I don't know about the sickness clearing up but it should start getting better for us now and hopefully disappear by the end of the first trimester.

Sounds like a lot of re-jigging at home! And potentially a lot of paperwork to relocate!

Twickers, was your sickness just as bad for you in the last pregnancy?

Otters, we're not jinxing either - I'll only start buying for the nursery in spring. But I'm interior obsessed so I thought I might as well start looking ;) On the finding out front, I'm keen to know the sex just to get my head round the idea and because I'm very curious ;)

Twickerhun · 28/11/2017 19:03

It’s so hard not to start shopping/planning isn’t it? It’s so early but the January sales could be a great time to pick up a bargain.

I feel really really ill now. Diarrhoea, stomach cramps, sickness. I’ve had a bucket next to me all day and I’ve been bed bound. It’s miserable. I didn’t have this last time at all.

I’m looking forward to finding out the sex of our baby just to help bonding and planning.

Twickerhun · 28/11/2017 19:05

Goodluck my dramas also had the room in the roof, it’s helpful not to have to run up an extra flight of stairs to our baby. Our two babies will need to share, but I figure that’s ok for a few years. Sorry you have to loose your office, I work from the kitchen table which isn’t ideal but is light and sunny and the kettle is close!

Twickerhun · 28/11/2017 19:48

Dramas? Dsd!

otters2017 · 28/11/2017 22:24

Twicker - sorry you're feeling so rough. Hope things get better soon!
I agree that the Jan sales would be a good time to get bargains and have already been thinking is it too early to get some stuff then especially the more expensive items. Will have to check the return policy.
Do you have lots of stuff to get or have you got most things already?

Jojo - we will have to turn the study into nursery which will be a big job. Not sure where everything is going to go, not much room but will have to make some sort of an effort. Will be keen to hear your nursery ideas.

JoJoSM2 · 29/11/2017 13:41

Twickers and Goodluck, that's a lot of children to accommodate!

Twickers, it might be nice for your two to share. Growing up, I shared with my sister and it was cool.

Otters, I'm gathering ideas for the nursery. I have wondered about shopping in he Jan sales but it does seem like a bit of a false start. Here are some pics I've found. The last one would match the style of our house really well but it looks a bit dull. I want something creative and funky!
Do you often work from home?

Twickers and Goodluck, have you for a lot of kiddie stuff in the garden already?

JoJo, our garden is tiny and 90% of it is taken up with DS1's trampoline! There must be about 10 footballs out there too.

Twickers, sorry you are poorly. Hopefully you are in the worst of it now and will start to feel better very soon.

JoJo, are you on tenterhooks waiting for the results? Average seems to be 7 days so you could hear in the next few days, right?

Sounds terrible but I'm worried that I will be disappointed if we are having a girl. So silly but really have my heart set on another boy, carzy as I already have 2 of them. I have quite a difficult relationship with my mum, even more so when I was growing up, so wondering if that has an impact in making me think I won't feel the same about a dauughter. I feel dreadful even saying this.

otters2017 · 29/11/2017 14:55

Jojo - the nurseries look nice, I like the last one. We don't have that much room in our house though. Just a shoe box of a room! I don't work from home at all. Sounds like all of you do?

Goodluck - can see where you're coming from about wanting another boy. I guess what will be will be. When do you find out?

8 weeks today and had quite sharp pains and cramps - got me worried for a while. Read that it could be uterus and ligaments stretching. No bleeding or spotting so just trying to stay calm. Still no nausea or sore boobs. How's everyone else feeling?
