Just thought I'd create a second thread for those following this case.

@justgettingthroughtheday you are misreading my post. I'm not saying the dog wouldn't still be a bit wet if it had been in. I'm just saying that it may have looked dry enough to the witness who found it. So I'm not convinced we can take this as proof the dog never went in the water at all that morning.

The armchair detectives (not referring to her family and friends) who know better than actual detectives and the insistence on this thread that the police are completely incompetent because of the length of a gilet is baffling.

It is often the case in these situations that the police are aware of what happened but continue to appeal for witnesses as they build their case. An arrest or discovery may be imminent for all we know. I remember watching a documentary on the disappearance of Shannon Matthew’s. The officers involved knew within days the mother was implicated but couldn’t release that information. Meanwhile the community marched in support of the family and protested at the seemingly uncaring police who were not doing enough to find a kidnapped child.

Very interesting.

@CromwellsPetHate what do you mean? What is not welcoming?

Even if the dog didn't go in doesn't mean she didn't. I'm pretty sure our dog would let me drown over jumping in the water.

Oldsu · 05/02/2023 19:54

Why was my post deleted admin I asked simple question about something I had heard in the early part of the news about this something I had not seen addressed in any thing else it want rude or disrespectful and someone kindly answered I read your guidelines and there was NOTHING in my post that contravened them so I do not understand

If some of the news reports are to be believed, the 1st witness to find the dog at 9.35 tied the dog up (to the bench perhaps?) before leaving for an appointment, so presumably they would have been close enough to really notice whether it was wet or not.

In the press conference on Friday, the police stated that the dog was dry and they did not believe the dog had been in the water.

Can't believe people are arguing over the clothes Nicola is wearing

justgettingthroughtheday · 05/02/2023 19:58

@TheUsualChaos the witness put the harness back on the dog and tied it up. If the dog had been wet they would have known about it!

What about the link about the conference call still being on, with phone on the bench, or nearby. You wouldn't leave a phone to go nearer the water, would you? And presumably work colleagues would have heard something if conference call still on?

Badger1970 · 05/02/2023 20:06

I've got a spaniel that I keep closely clipped all year round as she has a coat like a woolly mammoth after being spayed. She gets in water all the time, shakes off and is bone dry within minutes. If this lady's spaniel was clipped and it looks to be in photos, there's a very real possibility that she dried off quickly especially if she was running around looking for her owner.

It's such a tragic story, I can't even begin to imagine how her family and friends are feeling .

hattie43 · 05/02/2023 17:48

Absolutely this . I wouldn't leave a distressed dog tied up in such a remote area . I so hope they find this lady , the family are desperate for answers

It’s not a remote area and she phoned her daughter, who then phoned Nicola’s partner. I suppose she was in a hurry and didn’t want to leave the dog where it might get onto the road.

I'd probably do the same if I knew the dog and owner.

melonraspberry · 05/02/2023 20:08

Checking in.

So, personally I think this thread and other discussion is the only way the family will get the pressure kept on the police , if they don’t agree she definitely went into the water. They need publicity and getting people talking is how you keep the media covering it.

People get abuse all the time on those bloody newspaper comments, the local ‘live ‘ sites are the worst. They should be banned as they are not moderated.

She was on mute

MissingMoominMamma · 05/02/2023 20:14

The police didn’t cordon off the bench area until days afterwards, and loads of people had been down there.

TheUsualChaos · 05/02/2023 20:15

The police are only going on what the witness said though aren't they. Also, I wonder if the whole harness was put back on? Or just the lead clipped to the collar as that would be much quicker and easier and a more likely thing for a passer by to do who doesn't know the dog and would have to figure out how to put a harness on when apparently they were in a hurry hence not being able to stay with the dog.

But if the dog was indeed "bone dry" this just makes me think dog ran ahead for some reason, i.e. saw something it wanted to chase/went to greet another dog, and in that moment Nicola somehow fell into the river...dog returns confused as she's now not where it left her and runs about looking lost until the witness found it and tied to the bench.

melonraspberry · 05/02/2023 20:18

There’s a video on twitter of the bench and the river does look very still.

its so odd

Peverellshire · 05/02/2023 20:18

Nicola had form for being concerned about wildlife, she had tried to rescue a stranded sheep on an island in the middle of the river or similar.

Did she try to rescue an animal or bird or similar, what's the wildlife down there?

Yes this was sort of my thinking, different coats dry differently. My dog takes a good couple of hours to dry in this weather but other dogs practically shake dry.

I think I'm just trying to say the dog being described as "bone dry" is pretty unreliable evidence and has been leading people down some rabbit holes of taking that to mean she can't have been at the river edge.

Can't tides be under the surface?

Why are you excusing the family and friends from potentially disrupting the police investigation by their own unilateral activities in the public domain?

eighteenthirteen1 · 05/02/2023 20:22

Yes particularly strong undercurrent on ebbing tide. We live near a tidal river and it's so dangerous when the tide is going out.

There was no need to cordon it off. Police have already said they had done a visual examination of the area with nothing of note

MissingMoominMamma · 05/02/2023 20:27

So supposing their theory is wrong. Footprints etc would be gone.

melonraspberry · 05/02/2023 20:30

That’s terrifying re tides under the surface , I didn’t know that .

I’ve just done a browse on twitter and dear god I can see why the police and family are outraged at some of the speculation.

I’ll stick with MN I think
