I do my research when i go away, i make sure my children are welcome, not just tolerated. I check that the beds will be comfortable and large, i haven't gone so far as to enquire about the thread count of the sheets but otherwise i make damn sure that i will be spending my holiday time wisely.

If i was a lesbian i would do my research to make sure my holiday wasn't going to be wasted feeling uncomfortable around people who didn't want me there. Reasonably easy in these days of the internet i find.

We need our drum banging because i feel very strongly that we are and have been the backbone and engine room of this society and we are being sidelined in the name of "rights".

starkadder · 04/04/2010 15:42

So you'd just take your bags and quietly go off down the street to find somewhere else, at the last minute, with no prior booking, and you wouldn't mind at all? Really??

daftpunk · 04/04/2010 15:42

Ha ha....which one..?

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:43

"Worse is the comparison to a "vomiting drunk". You should be ashamed of yourself."

I didn't compare them to a vomiting drunk, I asked where you are allowed to draw the line with whom you invite into your home, I also noted that people who rent room- houses are allowed to discriminate which is in the same catagory as this.

And I am certainly not 'ashamed' of myself.

thedollshouse · 04/04/2010 15:43

"B&B owners do have the right not to have gay couples in their home since it is not compulsory to run a B&B. Don't want to obey the law, don't run a B&B. Simples."

I agree entirely ant3nna.

It reminds me of years ago when my uncle told the job centre that they were not to send him candidates that were gay, black or punk rockers (this was the early 80's). His view was that it was his business therefore he should be able to employ who he wanted. Wrong! If you can't comply with the law of the land you shouldn't be running a business.

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 15:45

A "lifestyle choice" is more like turning up as an adult baby, or wearing a gimp mask. Now I really might raise an eyebrow to that..

Alouiseg · 04/04/2010 15:45

Lolling! @brightongirl

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:47

"So you'd just take your bags and quietly go off down the street to find somewhere else, at the last minute, with no prior booking, and you wouldn't mind at all? Really??"

Yes, reeeeaaalllly.

Because as I said at the start (and all the way through) I believe that a B & B is a persons home and they have a right to choose who they allow in.

Just as if I book and then walk in and there's a zillion crosses everywhere there's no way in hell i'm staying there, if the place is crawlling with bugs etc, because I have that right to choose.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 04/04/2010 15:47

If B & Bs are so worried about homosexuals people having sex, couldn't they just put up a sign in all the bedrooms saying, "NO SHAGGING PLEASE'

Solved.

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 15:48

Even though some your views are incredibly obnoxious DP, I can't help liking you for some reason. Come back from the dark side...
Oh and as for your character, it has to be Shaun.

daftpunk · 04/04/2010 15:49

Lol...do you like that film..?

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 15:54

I think its the most moving film I have seen for ages. It represents how easy it is to be brainwashed when you fall on hard times.
Plus it identifies the difference between the original skinheads and the fascist variety, the latter of whom bastardised the subculture to sign vunerable kids up to the The National Front.

louise - "If i was a lesbian i would do my research to make sure my holiday wasn't going to be wasted feeling uncomfortable around people who didn't want me there. Reasonably easy in these days of the internet i find." I'm not sure where these 'We Are B&Bs That Hate Gays/Jews/Blacks' websites are. Where are they?

OP posts:
brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 16:02

Atlantis - a B & B is a business. The owners make money from letting their rooms. They should be upfront and honest about who they do/don't want in their establishment before their guests arrive at the door. Its only fair...

Alouiseg · 04/04/2010 16:03

Doh! Deliberately obnoxious said read my whole post and stop being obtuse!

MNHQ Feel free to delete this post. It's personal now.

daftpunk · 04/04/2010 16:05

Yep, the original skinheads were heavily influenced by Jamaican culture....they weren't political at all...the 60's must have been a great time to be young...everything seemed so simple.

I grew up in the Brixton area of London y'know, surrounded by blacks and homosexuals...(random info)

I've read all your posts... Still utterly perplexed by the bit I quoted. Bizarre.

"Atlantis - a B & B is a business. The owners make money from letting their rooms. They should be upfront and honest about who they do/don't want in their establishment before their guests arrive at the door. Its only fair... "

I agree it's only fair, just as I have said with people letting rooms or second homes to bring in an income and the adverts say 'female', 'professional' 'no ss' etc, the same should apply.

But people are arguing that they should not be allowed the choice of who they want in their house and have issue with what Mr Grayling is saying which is B&B's are not a normal business and the right of choice should be theirs.

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 16:15

But Alouise, don't you agree it would be better if any business that purposely discriminated against others should be forced to publicise their feelings? Maybe a website would be a good idea..
I once stayed in a Jehovahs Witness hotel outside Edinburgh with DP (now DH). The ad did not indicate that we would not be welcome because of our unmarried status or that the photos didn't represent the grim reality of the place. We stayed there for one night, under the disapproving eye of our hosts, and booked another B & B the next day. However, they LET US STAY. They were running a business, not a church.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 04/04/2010 16:16

Jamaicans? Really?

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 16:17

DP - I was almost with you there till that last comment...

TinaSparkles · 04/04/2010 16:22

Of course its wrong.

Surely it's an affront to human dignity to be told you can't be allowed to stay in a public place because of your sexuality.

The arguments for being allowed to discriminate are ridiculous.

There are people on here who would agree the moon was made of cheese if it was uttered by certain political parties.

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 16:28

Atlantis where have you seen ads for houses/rooms to let saying "No gays/blacks/Jews"? Most likely in the BNP newsletter...

daftpunk · 04/04/2010 16:32

ilove;

yes, ska music.

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 16:35

DaftPunk are you into ska?
