But, atlantis, I'm not going to discriminate against these B&B owners, am I? I'm not going to refuse them entry to my business, or deny them equal rights and opportunities? I just think they're not very nice people. Thinking someone isn't nice is not the same as discriminating against them.

Thinking you're a twat, for example, is not the same as discriminating against you.

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:17

"yes, as well as a Bigots Welcome sign, perhaps these prejudiced businesses could put a No Jews or No Blacks or No Gays or No Women sign up, too? Then all respectable, white, heterosexual, middle-class, C of E, male Tories could choose where they shop or do their business, away from 'others'. "

Already been asked and answered previously, maybe you should read the thread.

"male Tories could choose where they shop or do their business"

are there no Gay conservative MP's then? My god, alan duncan is straight after all? Don't tell him that, he thinks he's gay.

allegrageller · 04/04/2010 15:19

racist or antisemitic b and b owners should not be allowed to have a public policy of excluding black or jewish people.

The same clearly applies to homophobes.

That being said, perhaps homophobic, racist or antisemitic b and b owners should be forced to display some sort of health warning so that anyone likely to be offended by their prejudices can avoid them...

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:19

"I'm not going to discriminate against these B&B owners, am I? "

Yes, you are, by saying they don't have a right to say who they allow into their home you are discriminating against their beliefs.

daftpunk · 04/04/2010 15:19

Starkadder;

Would you happily let Nick Griffin stay at your B&B...?

allegrageller · 04/04/2010 15:21

I don't believe in pandering to Nazi beliefs, for example. So I also don't believe in pandering to homophobic beliefs in any way and I'm very glad the current government doesn't on the whole. The Tories worry me deeply for several reasons not least the fact that Cameron is answerable to a whole bunch of homophobes in his august party.

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:22

"The Tories worry me deeply for several reasons not least the fact that Cameron is answerable to a whole bunch of homophobes"

And these homophobes he's answerable too would be?

Alouiseg · 04/04/2010 15:24

Nightclubs can refuse entry to people on the grounds of appearance.

Surely if you run a business you should decide who comes in?

....and for the record i think that religion is a lifestyle choice.

allegrageller · 04/04/2010 15:25

every Tory party member I've ever met, atlantis. Without exception. Not all the supporters (although a lot of them) but all the members.

corrects self- I have met one gay Tory. Must be a lonely life.

I don't doubt that Cameron himself may not be homophobic but most Tory MPs would connive at least at a 'downgrading' of gay rights.

starkadder · 04/04/2010 15:25

daftpunk I don't have a B&B but if I did, I wouldn't want Nick Griffin there, no. I don't like him. I'd probably tell him he couldn't make a booking.

But, if I had a B&B and somehow discovered that some guests who'd booked and just turned up were members of the BNP, I wouldn't turn them away on those grounds, regardless of the fact that I don't agree with the BNP.

allegrageller · 04/04/2010 15:26

Also remember Cameron's appalling performance recently on the 'gay question'- he's also creating alliances with far right parties in Europe and has to be careful not to offend those lovely people by looking too liberal on sexual issues.

allegrageller · 04/04/2010 15:27

I'd let Griffin stay in a b and b if I ran one but not as my houseguest. Anyone has a right to use business services unless they're currently in prison or they're being violent/abusive etc.

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:30

"every Tory party member I've ever met, atlantis. Without exception. Not all the supporters (although a lot of them) but all the members."

Alan Duncan's a member, sure he is.. let me think, yes, you have to be a member in order to vote and be an MP.

I'm a fully paid up member (there's a shocker) so are a lot of my friends and family and work collegues (why?, because I recruited them) and guess what, we don't care if people are gay, we don't care if they are straight, we don't give a flying fart what people do in their private lives, were not an 'anti' gay party, nor are we a 'gay' party, were just a 'party.

Alouiseg · 04/04/2010 15:31

Frankly, the more i hear about rights the more i feel discriminated against.

When will someone bang the drum for white, married, middle class married mothers of 2?

It's quite alienating being "normal" sometimes.

daftpunk · 04/04/2010 15:31

Starkadder;

That would be your choice...and I'd have no problem with it, because if I was running a B&B no one would get through the door unless they smelt beautiful and looked like my type.

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:32

"he's also creating alliances with far right parties in Europe and has to be careful not to offend those lovely people by looking too liberal on sexual issues. "

He's created alliances with parties who do not believe that the EU should have so much power over a soverign nation, whatever their manifesto's are is irrelevant to the question of sticking two fingers up at Markel and Sarkovsky (and yes I probably didn't spell them right).

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:35

"When will someone bang the drum for white, married, middle class married mothers of 2?"

They are, the conservative party are all about family (along with numerous others ), as opposed to labour who have made it there policy to smash families apart and make marriage a dirty word.

starkadder · 04/04/2010 15:36

Alouise - I am a white, married, middle class mother of 1.

People don't bang the drum for us because we don't need them to.

If you went on holiday - arrived at your B&B after a long day of travelling, worn out and tired and looking forward to a nice cup of tea - and then the B&B owner turned you away, saying "Sorry, but I believe that white middle class married mothers are very wrong and so I cannot let you enter my home", what would you think?

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 15:37

I think if B & B owners want to descriminate then they should be forced to list who they don't want on all advertising material. If it is their religion they are basing this on then they should also refuse to entertain unmarried couples, Jews, thieves, alcoholics, gluttons, gamblers...thelit is endless... It's a business, no longer a home. We are letting our house at the moment and have had squatters, smokers, general arseholes pass through our doors. However, the letting agent keeps reminding me that regardless of how much I love my house, once others are renting it, it can no longer be seen as solely mine. I make an income from the tenants (unless they are squatting)

I can't believe anyone is justifying prejudice against gays by calling it a "lifestyle choice" and then following it by suggesting that genetic research is inconclusive...so sad...
Worse is the comparison to a "vomiting drunk". You should be ashamed of yourself.

Agree with hobnob - maybe pitch it to the Daily Wail - I'm sure they'd go ahead with it.

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:37

"daftpunk I don't have a B&B but if I did, I wouldn't want Nick Griffin there, no. I don't like him. I'd probably tell him he couldn't make a booking."

So you would discriminate against Mr Griffin because you didn't like him?

daftpunk · 04/04/2010 15:37

I'd think Labour had won again

starkadder · 04/04/2010 15:38

atlantis

[http://www.teachingandlearningresources.co.uk/homophones2.shtml for you]

starkadder · 04/04/2010 15:39

Sorry, link didn't work.

here it is again

It's about homophones, as opposed to homophobes. You seem to be a bit confused about both.

atlantis · 04/04/2010 15:40

" "Sorry, but I believe that white middle class married mothers are very wrong and so I cannot let you enter my home", what would you think? "

Personally I'd think, i'll go spend my money where i'm welcome, your loss, but I certainly wouldn't make a song and dance about it.

brightongirldownunder · 04/04/2010 15:40

Daftpunk...have you seen the film "This is England"? You really remind me of a character from it...
