Just seen a ticker on the BBC website saying that

you'd better read that thread again then, while you all pounced on me for daring to have a different opinion, I certainly WASN'T the only one who was exactly thrilled by it all.

Eugenious · 23/07/2005 23:09

er - I think you were jumped on for being abusive!

marthamoo · 23/07/2005 23:09

You'd be welcome, QofQ. No discrimination in my bar.

soapbox · 23/07/2005 23:13

Sorry Fran - but there is a sh*t load of difference from supporting the police if they have shot a suicide bomber and supporting the police when they have shot someone entirely unconnected!

And yes, contrary to your post, it would seem that there are people other than terrorists who should fear being shot by the police, this man being one of them.

Lets pray there will not be more.

I totally agree with Edam and WWW - questioning how and why this could possibly have happened is an extremely valid question!!

QueenOfQuotes · 23/07/2005 23:14

"er - I think you were jumped on for being abusive"

FFS - how many times do I have to point out that I was jumped on BEFORE I was abusive. I made 23 posts on there before I swore.

Martha - I know some of you wouldn't mind me joining you - but I'd probably P*ss most people off - thanks away.

QofQ i will reread that thread once i've caught up with this one but i do feel a general consensus yesterday was relief in rl.

Soapbox of course i see that difference, but yesterday we knew as much as the police, it was obvious there was a possibility the guy was innocent, but we were still praising them and i don't think you can just turn against when it becomes a mistake.

I must admit, i laughed at us poor Brits for getting it wrong a little embarrassing - of course that was after i thought omg poor innocent bloke, family and man responsible for the shooting.

Which work is that Eugenious ?

jampots · 23/07/2005 23:29

I dont think we should jump on the Police/Forces for shooting an innocent man - they acted in teh way they saw fit at that particular instant. I do feel sorry for the man and his family HOWEVER I think we should ask ourselves, "What would we have done if we had been the one holding the gun?" Would you shoot the suspected bomber or not?

Tinker · 23/07/2005 23:31

One off-duty clothes Israeli policeman dived on a suicide bomber, figured it as quicker than shooting him. Paralysed from the waist down now though.

Janh · 23/07/2005 23:33

And 3 of them dived on top of the one in the tube yesterday - they could have been blown up too.

Flossam · 23/07/2005 23:44

Just been on BBC news from a Brazilian journo that he spoke fluent English. Didn't know why he refused to stop at police request though.

saadia · 23/07/2005 23:46

I am very uncomfortable with the ease with which some posters have accepted the police's mistake.

An innocent man was pumped full of bullets and the attitude seems to be "well hey ho, these things happen".

I think we should wait for the investigation findings before being so understanding.

Flossam · 23/07/2005 23:49

The flip side of that is that we wait for the investigation before we be so judgemental.

The gist of it is the same isn't it? We don't know. We just have to wait and see what we are told in the future.

Fran1 · 23/07/2005 23:49

well hey ho, these things happen

Jimjams · 23/07/2005 23:52

So it was another Harry Stanley. What a bloody cock up.

Jimjams · 23/07/2005 23:53

And if someone in plain clothes came running towards me with guns in Stockwell I'd leg it as well. Fluent English or not.

soapbox · 23/07/2005 23:57

Fran- you are starting to sound flippant (your last post was as well) and frankly its not the right time or place for it!!!!!!!

Heathcliffscathy · 24/07/2005 00:00

edam. my sentiments exactly. QoQ, i too wasn't relieved or thrilled, frankly i wouldn't have been thrilled even if he was a terrorist as i would think that there would be more use for him alive to the investigation than dead.

flossam. i really truly and entirely give up. i'm very sorry i've attacked you. been unpleasant. etc etc. i don't want to give you a hard time. i don't want to make you feel sadder than you do. i tried to support you in your other thread about feeling scared today but you chose to ignore me.

i disagree very very strongly with your implied opinions. but equally have nothing against you personally other than your reactions to my percieved attacks.

i am sad to my bones about what is happening. i have lived in london all my life. i love this city. i've just bought a house to raise my ds in in this city. i am frightened to death that prejudice and intolerance are resulting from the bombings of this city.

toodarnhot · 24/07/2005 00:01

hmmm....i'm wondering if it is "being flippant" to question the (safely) "agreed consensus" or to dare to ask questions in these troubled times?

Fran1 · 24/07/2005 00:02

I agree i am sounding flippant soapbox - intentions all round.

Because at some point in these debates, i start to get mildly amused that we all think we know all the facts and our opinions are totally and utterly correct.

An awful lot goes on that we do not know about. We only hear what they want us to hear, so no amount of debating here on a "mums" chat board is going to find the answer.

Are you the mod here? If you are i will accept your comment about this not being the time nor place. But if you are not a mod, then i would like to think it is the time and the place for anyone to say whatever they like as this is simply an online chat board where we have the freedom to chat.

toodarnhot · 24/07/2005 00:03

or in other words fran, be careful- you're in danger of being in agreement with a cocky scot..

Fran1 · 24/07/2005 00:04

Glad to hear i put "mums" in inverted commas now that tdh is back

Welcome

Jimjams · 24/07/2005 00:04

Flossam he was in stockwell and people (not in uniform) were running towards him with guns. I used to feel jumpy every time I was in Stockwell. I wouldn't stop- I would stop if someone was in uniform, but not if they were plain clothes- not in Stockwell- I would assume they were drugs dealers and I'd leg it.

As I said yesterday when discussing Harry Stanley I try very hard to be pro-police- generally I am- but this sort of cock up is about the worst possible to make at the worst possible time. TBH I think it is indefensible and will have huge repurcussions.

Fran1 · 24/07/2005 00:04

frightening isn't it.

marthamoo · 24/07/2005 00:05

Can I be - well, not flippant exactly but not on topic?

tdh and soph - do you have a PC each? 'Cos I have this vivid mental picture of you fighting over one keyboard going "No! It's my turn..." "Hey, I just thought of something else..." "Gerrofff" etc.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/07/2005 00:06

jimjams, i sincerely hope your gravitas on this site and reasonable non-shouty-ness means that your expression of exactly what i have been trying to say is met with more support.
