The people who are agreeing with them are doing so because they are racists, I'm not sure it is possible to reason with people who are so lacking in humanity. Yes the BNP are gaining support because every country has its fair share of dimwits - not because they are raising legitimate concerns. There are many white working class people who can see through their scummy arguments and many educated and professional people who cannot.

BigGitDad · 22/10/2009 11:45

DP, of course there are problems and to some extent you know I agree with you on the issues. The question is how do you deal with those issues and for me the BNP is a dangerous route to go down. Lets face it as a white middle class male would I have anything to lose if the BNP came to power?. But I still would not vote for them in a million years. They would ruin the political and economic society in the UK.

daftpunk · 22/10/2009 11:49

in my opinion electra..

i didn't start this thread...i don't think i've ever started a political thread.....i just post on some of them...

i have "come out" (so to speak)...about my feelings towards the BNP....that will have a lasting impact on my time here....they is no coming back from this...i just hope people are adult enough to accept that we live in a democracy and we all have the right to vote for whoever we want..

BigGitDad · 22/10/2009 11:49

Moffat read the article that the link was posted to yesterday then come back and say the white working class arguments are scummy.
Scroll back to 21-Oct-09 22:55:38.
Then let me know what you think.

2kidzandi · 22/10/2009 11:52

"the BNP are gaining support.....why do you think that is..?"

Because it's rhetoric is easy, straight forward, and panders to an over-inflated love of nationalism, pride and self-conceit. It's simple. All the problems in the country are caused by everyone else being the wrong colour. And essentially too many people of the wrong colour being in the UK.

If you want to have a debate about immigration have a talk about immigration. If you want to have a debate about race vote for BNP but don't try and pretend that you do for some kind of noble reason.

daftpunk · 22/10/2009 11:52

i agree with you BGD....i don't want them running the country...but i want them in parliament, ..having them there will hopefully get the main parties to listen.

slug · 22/10/2009 11:54

But wasn't there a piece of research released earlier this year that proved the 'immigrants are housed before British people' argument was a complete myth?

I think it was just 11% of immigrants get public housing

electra · 22/10/2009 11:58

Listen to what? Hate fuelled, racist, bigoted rants?

If they were in parliament that would be the most backward step I could think of.

seeker · 22/10/2009 12:03

DP -I repeat. Which of the BNP's policies do you give 100% support to?

And why do you object to being called a fascist?

slug · 22/10/2009 12:07

I always feel it is somewhat ironic that the excuse for supporting the BNP is "They listen to us" when the "us" refuse point blank to listen to the facts.

It really is easier to cling to your prejudices than to bother to try and understand the statistics.

allok · 22/10/2009 12:07

Well, back to tonight I hope his appearance hasn't been so overhyped that it ends up being a very insipid debate.
Hoping that there are some bright and humorous audience members who throw out some meaty questions.

I, for one, would like to know more about the BNP record lable - what kind of genre is their music and the lyrics?

BigGitDad · 22/10/2009 12:08

what'a fascist Seeker? Interesting article.
By the way DP did not object, she said 'Call me what you want.'

seeker · 22/10/2009 12:11

"i want the right to vote BNP without being called a fascist"

DP - 11.04 this morning!

2kidzandi · 22/10/2009 12:14

DP the Nazis were once a minority political party in Germany who no one believed would ever take power. Remember?

And I do find it ever so slightly ironic when some - the majority I've met are decent - white British people start complaining about the "mass immigration" of foreign nationals overwhelming their country's borders. I daresay there many many more people in the world who can say - and provide historical evidence that proves it - that interference from the British in their own country has messed up their politics and economy for good. In fact I'd say that a good number of them have found it necessary to immigrate here for that very reason. Let us not forget how the British extended their empire in the days of good Queen Victoria. At one time 1 in 4 people in the world was a member of the British commonwealth I believe. How exactly did Britain become so wealthy?

When the white British go abroad they are not treated with scorn. (even when some of them behave like drunken hooligans) But those with your mindset like to imagine that the dispicable rules they apply to others should never apply to them don't they?

BigGitDad · 22/10/2009 12:14

Oops Seeker, missed that.

allok · 22/10/2009 12:25

I don't particularly agree that British involvement abroad is the only reason for their problems now.

Mugabe's instistance on holding onto power at the expense of the country's economy and human rights record (not forgetting Zimambwe at one point was Africa's richest country - he's bled the country dry for power.

However, when you have Empire you have responsibilities - my dm is from an East African country and therefore had British nationality and passport at birth. She was merely coming to mother country when she came here - not as an economic migrant - far from it. She considers herself British as she's never had any other nationality.

We can go 'round in circles about entitlement and what's British and what's English and what isn't - but the facts are simple - we are a tiny little country which is getting very crowded - however we, like many other countries, have an economy based on the need for many more workers than we have. We need more people so they are going to come.

Who do we think are paying for current pensioners.

AliGrylls · 22/10/2009 12:38

I can't wait for question time tonight. I don't usually watch but I am sure it will be interesting to see what he has to say.

DH and I were discussing the BNP this morning. We are both very anti BNP, however, they do obviously appeal to a particular type of person - in particular white, working classes on low income. DH pointed out (and I do agree with this) that these people have fundamentally become disenfranchised as immigrants are prepared to do already low paid jobs for half the price.

From my own experience as well I do find the political correctness in this country has gone a step too far as people can't have a view on particular issues anymore without the opposing view being deemed to be racist. Example, we were discussing immigration over dinner with my family a couple of weeks ago - I think as a nation we allow too many immigrants into the country. For saying this I was told by my family that I was racist. Example 2, being told I am racist for singing ba ba black sheep. I did not even know that the words had been changed to white sheep or that it caused offence - it is a nursery rhyme and was written about 100 years ago (I actually have no idea but I imagine it was).

Also, what is actually wrong with having a national identity? After all in the States they are very proud to be American and they are also a multi cultural society. I don't feel a bad person for saying I feel proud to be British, after all, part of being British is accepting people for who they are.

I don't think any other party addresses these things because they are too afraid to be labelled as being racist. Before anyone accuses me of being racist which I am sure some people are thinking I must be, DH is Jewish.

daftpunk · 22/10/2009 12:46

seeker;

posted the policies yesterday....can't remember what time...

LetThereBeRock · 22/10/2009 13:01

The link you posted yesterday

daftpunk · 22/10/2009 13:02

thank you...

love the name...

slug · 22/10/2009 13:06

AliGrylls, I think you'll find that the whole Baa Baa Black Sheep story is a complete fabrication. This is from Wikipedia

The "Baa Baa White Sheep" story was a wholesale fabrication, reporting events that never happened. Nonetheless, the story "got legs" (as journalists put it) and was widely reported, modified, and re-reported by the press, to the extent that it has gained almost the status of an urban myth, being reported of people and institutions different to those of the original story of 1986.[4] Both The Age and The Herald reported in 2002, for example, the same "Baa Baa White Sheep" story, ascribing it to a parent of a child attending Paston Ridings Primary School in London.[14][15]

The whole story can be found here I think you'll find the 'political correctness gone too far' is almost entirely the fabrication of right wing newspapers looking for catchy headlines to suck in readers with low reading ages and few critical facilities.

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 22/10/2009 13:07

Have you stopped engaging with me now DP? Is that because you find the questions uncomfortable?

Wonderstuff · 22/10/2009 13:13

I think that NG should be able to go on QT, in the interests of free speech, because an awful lot of people voted for him.

I hope to god that he gets a good grilling and comes out looking like the ugly thug that he is.

I followed the link to the BNP site, I found the last line 'the BNP is Britians last hope' chilling - is exactly what Hitler said.

I think that actually there is a huge amount of racism in the UK and that a lot of the BNP voters are racist. The BNP are taking full advantage of the economic downturn to spread their lies and hate.

I have just taught a course on Nazi Germany, and the thing is Hitler wasn't elected on a 'lets kill all the Jews' manifesto - I very much doubt most Germans would have voted for him. He was elected on a 'German jobs for German people, lets restore traditional family values, put Germans before immigrants, we are Germany's last hope' manifesto.

I was shocked that the reaction of a few of my students to the fact that gypsies were targeted by the Nazi's was 'good' (thankfully they changed their minds a little when we discussed it further).

Our situation is not as dire and our constitution is more robust than 1930's Germany's, but we must not get complacent. I feel we really need politians to challenge racism, at the moment they seem to be pretending it doesn't exist, there seems to be a feeling that people voting BNP are not racist and I just don't think that is the case.

Nancy66 · 22/10/2009 13:13

I'm sure QT will be a huge anti climax, these things usually are after weeks of build up.

has the rest of the panel been announced yet?

daftpunk · 22/10/2009 13:14

vw;

i would never stop talking to you...
