"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

1009 replies

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

OP posts:

Tee hee

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 13/08/2009 13:31

Dp do you really think anyone would be happier itf it were The TImes? Doubt it, I wouldn't

daftpunk · 13/08/2009 13:31

and your name changes are embarrassingly unfunny...how old are you..?

tattycoram · 13/08/2009 13:31

But that former mnetter (I really hope it isn't the one we think, because I really liked her) won't have editorial control over how that stuff is used. Her editor at teh DM will commission her to find stuff on particular topics with particular slants, or take out certain posts and leave in others. So a discussion about a poster's misgivings about a nursery becomes "proof" that all nurseries are awful.

There is no paper with a more coherent editorial line than the DM. It is naive to think that mnet contributions won't be used to further that line.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 13/08/2009 13:32

Have linked both TTR and SN to this, as think people should at least know before they post

At the most basic level MN should send a release to peoples e-mails

K999 · 13/08/2009 13:33

I read the Daily Mail and am not a fascist!! However, if everyone on MN had the same opinions it would be very boring...we are all entitled to our opinions, whether they are 'popular' or not!!

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 13/08/2009 13:34

Me DP? 36.

My name changes are puely for the reason that the DM cannot rint them. It's eitehr that or I ioss off tbh, and I don't see why I should (though won't be responding to many types of ost until I have thought it through)

I don't for one minute think DM readers smell of wee which is why my name is asks is.... OTOH if I put 'smells of levender' it'd hardly work would it?

daftpunk · 13/08/2009 13:35

but that's where you're sadly wrong K999...we are not all entitled to our opinions.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 13/08/2009 13:36

I suppose the other concern is that if one apper does it the toehrs invariably follow suit

We may be able to trust this poster. However can we trust random-ladder- climber- assigned- to- task? nope

Iklboo · 13/08/2009 13:37

Surely any MNer has the right to change their name - it isn't against the law. I mean, it's a democracy isn't it

Nancy66 · 13/08/2009 13:38

None of you are being quoted - your online personas are being quoted. Entirely different.

daftpunk · 13/08/2009 13:39

you must be in shock that a former mumsnetter writes for the daily mail...someone you may have liked and chatted to....you will have to go and have a bath in bleach.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 13/08/2009 13:39

DP

your existence on MN is evidence that we are

How many people have asked you to leave? I can only guess that e-mails have been sent to MN. yet MN hasn't given in (rightly, though you know we rarely agree).

That shows opinions are allowed. And sometimes those opinions will be DP / Peachy / AN Other I think you talk crap. How much of that you attract is alrrgely down to choice: you know you're on a site where your views are rarely sahred, that's fine but it's basic rality that you will be repeatedly argues with as a result.

Whereas if I went on to DM.COm and spread my views I suspect I would alrgely receive the same treatment but, like you, I would expect to be able to air them.

FAQtothefuture · 13/08/2009 13:39

well I've just read the entire thread - and tbh I think I'll be drastically cutting down, if not stopping, my MN posting from now on.

Of COURSE I know it's all public - searchable on google, blah blah blah.

But that's a heck of a lot different from someone picking up a copy of the daily mail/going online to the DM website and reading it.

I always post in the knowledge that I could be "recognised" on here, and more found out about me using google. But I certainly don't post thinking that I'll be in a national newspaper where the readership is going to be much higher - and yes sadly I do have family members who would never even think to look on MN but read the Daily Mail.

LadyMuck · 13/08/2009 13:40

But then all that we come back to is that every poster needs to think about how much personal information they give away on this or any website, whether under a pseudonym or not. And I would have thought that there have been enough reported outings for people to have realised that. It doesn't stop it from being irritating of course, but it isn't new.

vonsudenfedhatespauldacre · 13/08/2009 13:40

Apparently I am entitled to my opinion, but the Daily Mail is also entitled to it too. I really don't like that.

And Peachy, never thought I would find myself agreeing that those Moldies make sense, but 'tis true. Shall we start an open-access un-Googlable forum. With copyright to us...

And where has Justine gone? There are plenty of q's unanswered here.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 13/08/2009 13:41

No Nancy, it needn't be.

if I stuck to threads on bumsex, school run dresses and jolly stuff then absolutely.

Those threads are the energy of MN, but underneath there are a lot of threads in areas such as SN where people do give away far more, and experiences are shared as a way of helping people in really difficult palces; same thing in relationships etc- and some of the past rape threads spring to mind.

That is far deeper.

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 13:42

I still think people are making a mountain out of a molehill, tbh.

FAQtothefuture · 13/08/2009 13:42

Nancy - most of our on line personas I belive are a representation of our RL lives.

Many people post about things that are happening in RL - more personal stuff - but we do it in the knowledge that someone on Mumsnet may recognise us.

Not that someone may think they know us from a snippet in a national newspaper, go on to mumsnet and deliberately search for more information.

daftpunk · 13/08/2009 13:43

peachy;

how many people have asked me to leave..?

loads...

how many people have complained..?

loads..

Tamarto · 13/08/2009 13:43

'None of you are being quoted - your online personas are being quoted.'

Actually our online personas are being missquoted, and people IRL know my posting name because i don't post anything that i don't speak about IRL however i don't like the idea that i could be missquoted and have people think i said something i didn't.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 13/08/2009 13:44

But LM it still differs

random reader realises they are being mentioned in a thread

heck,I can live with that: I'drpefer not but I keep to truth for that reason, or disguise essential info when needed

random reader realises theya re mentioned and receives the DM spin n my postings. Not so good. The DM has a target market and that isn't me or poeple who share my views on life.

FAQtothefuture · 13/08/2009 13:45

Recognisable/googlable/searchable from Mumsnet

is NOT the same as the above via a National Newspaper.

For those that think it is.

How many of you would share things you share on Mumsnet with a National Newspaper?? Because I certainly wouldn't.

daftpunk · 13/08/2009 13:45

how many people have i asked to leave or complained about?....zero..

because i believe in democracy and freedom of speech.

MamazontheDailyMailtakingadump · 13/08/2009 13:46

DaftPunk - i would never ever tell you to keep your opinions to yourself.
In fact i would activly encourage you to voice those opinions in open debate. that way you will see those viewpoints challenged and possibly swayed.

But it is a common theme of the daily mail to publish lazy ignorant articles.
the readers then form very narrow minded opinions on matters that are important. certain people can be easily influenced by what they read in newspapers. every time the DM publishes an article about paedophiles lurking around the corner some poor child is refused a trip to the park.
And yes i do know people who read the Dm. my grandfather whom i loved dearly would buy it regularly. thankfully he didn't rely on it as his sole source of information he he was therefore able to build a more balanced view on most subjects.

we diod however have some fantastic debates!

Whilst i would find it very frustrating to hear 300 posts screaming that immigrants should bugger off home, at least we would be doing the world a favour by offering the more reasoned counter argument. thus hopefully helping those people see the bigger picture. Im not claiming that we are right and they are wrong. im sure there is room for movement on both sides.

But peachy is right, its not just the fact this is the DM, if it were grauniad it'd be just as bad.
