"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

1009 replies

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

10% if you are not crediting the source and/or have not got syndication or copyrights.

it is more complicated than that definitely, which is part of the problem I think - nobody really knows quite what is allowed and what isn't and especially where the internet is concerned.

kalo12 · 13/08/2009 22:09

aitch - you're right, sorry, only read first posts and didn't think about the true impact of this situation.

HeahLardy · 13/08/2009 22:10

"However we recognised the author as a Mumsnetter and so I wrote to her a couple of days ago to ask if, as it seemed it might be from the title, going to be a regular thing. She confirmed it was."

Justine - was there a bit of banter about the above correspondence or is that pretty much how it was?

PerArduaThinksFucktheDM · 13/08/2009 22:13

Thunderduck - might I suggest ThunderfucktheDM?

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 13/08/2009 22:14

Erm... do we actually sign a contract with MN giving them the copyright of our words/comments? I have not physically signed anything.

As far as I am aware, it's any medium that has taken someone time/skill to create. The internet and sites like this are the same as a written book, copywrite goes to the person creating the article unless they have contracted ownership to another party. It has been a while since I've done copyright law though so it may have changed since this.

OhYouBadBadDailyMail · 13/08/2009 22:16

"As well as jeopardising (sp?) vulnerable posters, I also think we'll lose a lot of the humour on this site if people are afraid to post. Would WWB have posted about her MIL giving her elastic for Christmas if she thought it was likely to end up in the DM?"
Flash you are right. We shan't be able to talk about anything like that if its going to get published nationwide.

Thunderduck - I am really sorry, this must be horrid for you.

This whole thing makes me really angry.

sweetnessfollows · 13/08/2009 22:17

I've just found this thread after being away from the internet for some time.
It was my post that they took and put in the daily mail and I think it's absolutely disgusting that a qualified journalist has being able to write this. Fair enough that they want to take the information from here but they should at least get their facts right. They will have no idea how this has upset people and I'm sorry for this post being linked to you but I really appreciaite your advice.
This was my first ever post on MumsNet as I only joined last week and I cant believe its in the Daily Mail.
Thunderduck, I hope you're okay. I really feel like sending an angry email or a strongly worded letter.
Sorry that my post caused so much trouble everyone but thank you so much to those who replied.

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 22:19

Bloody Hell, that was a baptism of fire then! I hope you stick around!

PerArduaThinksFucktheDM · 13/08/2009 22:20

Sweetness - are you having the original thread pulled? Hope you sorted things out with work, but for heaven's sake don't tell us under your current name!

morningpaper · 13/08/2009 22:20

sorry sweetnessfollows, what a nightmare for you

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 13/08/2009 22:20

"Thanks for your contributions to Mumsnet. Please bear in mind that Mumsnet is international and is accessible throughout the world and that by contributing in any way to the website, as above, you are consenting to the publication of your contribution on Mumsnet and to linked Mumsnet sites"

From the disclaimer at the very bottom of the screen.

scottishmummy · 13/08/2009 22:20

sweetness, blimey you join and week later DM print your post.hope you ok

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 22:21

And Thunderduck, I'm sorry matey- I knew that would be psetting for you

Agree you should both complain to the journalist. If she's got some decency, perhaps this upset will let her withdraw her idea for the column?

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 13/08/2009 22:24

look at this!!

I hope you are OK thunderduck.

GodzillasBumcheek · 13/08/2009 22:25

I googled Mumsnet after finding this thread and found this "article"

I'd be amazed if nobody's mentioned it before but if anyone's like me and hasn't seen it yet...blummin' 'eck.

theyoungvisiter · 13/08/2009 22:25

crikey Sweetness! Well done for sounding so calm in your post.

Hope you have sorted things out with work - but maybe you want to namechange before you post any more ?

MarshaBrady · 13/08/2009 22:26

It's not about keeping one's real identity private, or being worried people can google etc, it is about what mn represents particularly to the people who use it.

It's meant to be a supportive site. When the dm messes with quotes or even when it doesn't but people feel crappy by virtue of being linked with a crappy paper then it is going against the grain of what mn is about.

As shown exactly in this instance, Thunderduck sorry you have been dragged into it, I would be livid and upset too.

Also think mnhq should be more discerning about it's alliances, I mean you're building a brand aswell as a business right?

scottishmummy · 13/08/2009 22:27

being the meticulous type- i was familiar with the disclaimer and its ramifications

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 13/08/2009 22:28

"This website and its contents are copyright Mumsnet. All rights reserved.

No part of the site may be distributed or copied for any commercial purpose without express approval."

MarshaBrady · 13/08/2009 22:28

And horrible for sweetness too, not good at all.

OhYouBadBadDailyMail · 13/08/2009 22:29

So why doesn't 'Reproduction of all or any substantial part of the contents in any form is prohibited.

No part of the site may be distributed or copied for any commercial purpose without express approval.' conflict with the DM plagiarising content from here?

HeahLardy · 13/08/2009 22:29

"Reproduction of all or any substantial part of the contents in any form is prohibited.

No part of the site may be distributed or copied for any commercial purpose without express approval."

Ooo, interesting.

This bit is mad though:

"Once you have submitted material such as a letter, birth story, experience etc to Mumsnet either by way of the site, direct email, by post or fax, the material sent automatically becomes the copyright of Mumsnet Ltd.

This means that ownership transfers from you to Mumsnet Ltd and you may not submit the same material to any other website or printed publication without our prior agreement."

What, I have to get permission to write anywhere else about an experience??

Swedes · 13/08/2009 22:30

Sweetness and Thunderduck - I would urge you both to contact a lawyer, perhaps under the guidance of MNHQ, together? Defamation exists quite independently of copyright law.

sweetnessfollows · 13/08/2009 22:32

I'm fine honestly. Its the name mix up on there that has annoyed me. I wouldn't have minded them using my name as it was my first post and no one I know knows I'm on here. They did, however, use a name of someone that is well known and its completely wrong for them to be able to have such a mix up like this and get away with it.
I think I will do a name change before my next post lol. Jeez, finding out I'm pregnant, losing my job and the dailymail buggering things up all in a few weeks. Crazy!

Rindercella · 13/08/2009 22:32

This whole thing is sitting really uncomfortably with me. The first thing I did after reading the posts here and Justine's comments was to take down my profile page. I am seriously considering de-registering and having all of my posts deleted.

I think that MNHQ is sadly undervaluing the very essense of MN. I love the open debate on MN, the shared experiences and the genuine offers of help and empathy. If I wanted DM readers' views, help and empathy (ahem) then I would become a regular poster on their website. I don't as it is an abhorrent publication imo.

Of course there is always a risk of someone in RL identifying you on MN, but that risk is going to surely multiply by exposing discussions to a totally new audience.

How on Earth can MNHQ be comfortable with this journalist using huge chunks of MN for her column? She firstly failed to give them the common courtesy of letting them know that there was going to be the regular feature in the DM - "This week on MN..." or whatever bollocks she's called it. Big black mark. She has attributed an OP to the wrong person (so sorry Thunderduck ). Big black mark. She has potentially identified someone within a week of the post. Which was her second week on the job! Big black mark. Surely not a terribly auspicious start?

So Justine, if you found that legally there was something you could do to stop this column, would you?

I am going to sleep on this, but sadly I think my time at MN has come to an end.
