I can't decide whether this is very sad or quite enterprising. A bit of both I think.

What did amaze me is that a medical professional endorsed her virginity at a press conference!

story here - warning, it's in the DM!

"Why should a woman's self-respect depend on her sexual habits?
Would you say that about a man?
Would this thread even exist if a gorgeous young hunk flogged a few nights of pleasure to the highest paying anonymous bidder?"

well, a man can't actually auction his intact hymen, can he?

that is the bit I object to, putting a price on a woman's virginity

I am not aplauding, nor am I negatively judging, it is something she has done with her own body of her own choice, and if it were an 18 yr old man I would have the same response!

Pan · 13/05/2009 18:10

Maybe we should all auction our virginities and see what we are bid? Some are less..erm... authentic, than others, but it would be a fun idea......??

mrsruffallo · 13/05/2009 18:14

Are we living in a money worshipping society where money is valued above all?
Many times have I heard the argument"well, good for her, she made money out of it" justifying any amount of degradation
Now that is narrow minded

southeastastra · 13/05/2009 18:15

depressing

MANATEEequineOHARA · 13/05/2009 18:21

Quote Mrsruffallo "Justifying any amount of degradation"

...but why IS IT degrading. Yes it is sad that money is so highly valued, but that is capitalism for you, she got her very-highly-valued money and certainly does not sound like someone who feels degraded!

charitygirl · 13/05/2009 18:22

Coming late to the party her but ugh x 1000 to Disenchanted's use of the word 'tramp'.

I hope she comes back and explains what 'tramp' means. I don't agree with what this girl did because I think it makes her vulnerable to some fucked up, creepy guy, But I don't think that any woman's worth resides in her vagina.

And what she does with it doesn't affect her moral standing. I wish more people didn't rate a woman's morality on what's between her legs.

mollyroger · 13/05/2009 18:27

Pan, perhaps there's a market for erm, used vintage virginities....mine was circa 1986. Very a la mode now, I'd have thought

MANATEEequineOHARA · 13/05/2009 18:35

Indeed Charitygirl, one could wonder if Disenchanted et al are just left feeling inferior as this girl does not rate her self worth as a sexual object, but is making money out of men to further her own career.

Pan · 13/05/2009 18:37

true molly!

mines is a 1977 classic, didn't really value it until it was stolen in a smash-and-grab raid. A double blag of virginity and heart by some pretty young vixen....will sell both as a job lot!

mollyroger · 13/05/2009 18:40

. trouble is, the original packing is a little battered.... do you think that will decrease potential value?

charitygirl · 13/05/2009 18:44

manatee - well, i don't think that it was a positive move on the part of this girl for reasons unrelated to morality.

But I totally agree that women who use words like 'slut' and 'tramp' usually are threatened by women who don't conform to conventional (i.e. sexist) views of female sexuality!

MANATEEequineOHARA · 13/05/2009 18:47

Mollyroger, call it shabby chic and that will be fine

Pan · 13/05/2009 18:52

not at all, molly! Some items become more desirable when presented in this way. Mines looks as lovely now as it did in 1977. Lots and lots of regular polishing.....[gulp].

Vittoria · 13/05/2009 19:59

"re those who question self respect being based on sexuality - never felt shit after a one night stand?"

Can I turn that around? Because it's really not "as simple as that".

Anyone ever felt great after a one night stand?

"never felt shit after a one night stand?"

Nope, because I've always been the one either initiating it or choosing to say because I wanted it as well. Mutual exploitation suggests no exploitation at all but fair exchange.

As as been said before on here Charity girl, a womans worth is not in her vagina or the virginal flap of skin contained therein!

tattifer · 13/05/2009 21:00

Vittoria - yes indeedy

Vittoria · 13/05/2009 21:23

Indeedy indeed! Feminism has been quite sucessfull in many things, though it seems loath to admit it!

The idea that women are passive objects in sex really does hark back to the Victorian age.

I wonder if women were the 'thrusters' and the man laiud back and enjoyed it, some feminists wouldn't construe that as misogny too. That woman had to do all the work while the men were 'serviced'. You just can't win when some people are intent on seeing women as inferior in some way - in this case feminism!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 13/05/2009 21:25

vittoria - i trust you have never felt 'pushed' into a one night stand

i think some of the responses on here very very odd

I love sex

i have had good experiences

i have had bad experiences

i have been pushed into things i did not want

i feel this girls immature view of sexuality and human nature and her own 'values' have led to a very sad and sorry situation
I hope some of you are right and that she does not go on to feel huge regret later in life that she prostituted herslef to some wierdo

i doubt it though

morningpaper · 13/05/2009 21:33

agree with Dittany on this one

Indeed Stewie, masquerading as informed feminism if some of the posters here are to be believed
