the teenager who sold her virginity to the highest bidder to fund her further education

I can't decide whether this is very sad or quite enterprising. A bit of both I think.

What did amaze me is that a medical professional endorsed her virginity at a press conference!

story here - warning, it's in the DM!

I don't see how it's a circular argument, Vittoria.

if virginity is highly valued, then it surely follows that sexual experience in a woman is seen as less desirable

you can only sell your virginity once

anyone who acts this out by selling her virginity is buying into and encouraging the idea that women+virginity=good, women+no-longer-virgins= less good

if it was purely about sexual exchange, why would she need to advertise her virginity?

why not just say, you can have sex with me?

personally, I like the idea of female sexuality and females being sexually active seen as something positive

I am not actually sure that all sexual exhanges of this kind are about exploitation

but this one does imo have very strong patriarchal overtones

Hardly passive if she is the one initiating it....!

Vittoria · 13/05/2009 14:14

"sounds very patriarchal to me, and the fact that she is able to exploit it to her gain doesn't make it less patriarchal"

That doesn't sound like a circular argument?

pottycock · 13/05/2009 14:22

I find it really interesting that she has romanticised it and that the media and medical profession have supported her to do this. What's that saying about our attitudes toward women's bodies in contemporary society? I'm quite sure it's not an expression of ultimate emancipation, but I believe this girl thinks it's something approaching that.

Whatever price she gets, she is selling herself short
Nothing admirable about it at all-where does she go from here?

TinySocks · 13/05/2009 14:26

This is very sad indeed. Stop the world, I want to get off.

georgiemum · 13/05/2009 14:27

Reminds me of Memoirs of a Geisha (a bit)

Vittoria · 13/05/2009 14:32

Probably on to a good uni actually Mrs Ruff!

mrsruffallo · 13/05/2009 14:34

That's alright then

Vittoria · 13/05/2009 14:37

Well it might be for her. It's a distict possibilty, isn't it?

lljkk · 13/05/2009 14:43

Why should a woman's self-respect depend on her sexual habits?
Would you say that about a man?
Would this thread even exist if a gorgeous young hunk flogged a few nights of pleasure to the highest paying anonymous bidder?

Vittoria · 13/05/2009 14:44

"Why should a woman's self-respect depend on her sexual habits?"

Exactly lljkk!

Agree with lljkk too, why is everyone at her for this, I really do not get it. She has a body that can make money and has done this to go to uni, I am at how narrow minded some people are. And as for the man, well he was financially exploited wasn't he??? He had the means to pay for something but had to bid to get it.

I would think a (barf) "gorgeous hunk" doing this was as sleazy as her to be honest.
It's prostitution, and worse than that, it's being carried out by someone with no idea of the psychological impact that sex without emotion has.
This is not a feminist act at all- how can she bein charge when as a virgin her experience is so limited

Vittoria · 13/05/2009 17:01

Well your entitled to you opinion Mrs Ruff, Ditt, et al. But you know, its not the only one or the right onw, just yours.

Life is like a box of chocolates...

Hulababy · 13/05/2009 17:04

I think it is really sad.

It is prostitution and nothing more. IMO prostitution is NOT a good thing, for either party.

I can see nothing enterprising or good about the whole thing.

TinySocks · 13/05/2009 17:04

narrow minded? So what do you call selling your body for money?
I would be LIVID if any of my nieces or my sons did something like this. I hope they have enough self dignity never to sell themselves like this.

MANATEEequineOHARA · 13/05/2009 17:28

Narrow minded is what people are, who can only see prostitution as one way exploitation!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 13/05/2009 17:34

agree Mrs R

re those who question self respect being based on sexuality - never felt shit after a one night stand?

It can be as simple as that

I may have thought it a laugh to do something like that at 18

At 40 i would be filled with self loathing

MANATEEequineOHARA · 13/05/2009 17:44

I have indeed felt shit after a one night stand in a omg-what-a-stupid-drunken-thing-to-do-with-a-stranger kind of way. But if I had initiated it and been paid I would not have felt that way, having negotiated a price I would have felt like I had done something rather empowered with my body. But that is just my opinion. However I am generally considered rather prudish and about anything to do with sex, so I am just wondering if there are many nuns posting on this thread???
