the teenager who sold her virginity to the highest bidder to fund her further education

I can't decide whether this is very sad or quite enterprising. A bit of both I think.

What did amaze me is that a medical professional endorsed her virginity at a press conference!

story here - warning, it's in the DM!

In that case Paula, apologies.

However, I don't think this girl is a victim. We all make daft choices which we think were brilliant at the time. Some of us have the guts to make choices that we know are life changing but are, as far as we're aware at the time, necessary.

She put out for money then she put it out there via the DM. People are now expected to have opinions, good, bad or ugly. Who are the ones being exploited?! Good for her. I hope she doesn't regret it. She might very well think twice, or more. Lets hope if she does, that she can cope with that.

PortoPandemico · 12/05/2009 23:40

No, and I said earlier women have been doing this for CENTURIES. It makes it no less sad thay have to keep doimg it.

muffle · 12/05/2009 23:42

Um scottishmummy yes. I have a friend who thinks it's funny that she gets her DH to buy her expensive shoes in exchange for BJs. A lot of women talk about sex/BJs as a reward for men spending money on them - I've even seen it on here. A lot of women try to snare a rich husband (and many succeed) using their looks and bodies - there are even plenty of agencies to help them. A lot of women the world over are in relationships that they stay in because the man provides their wealth and they are expected to give sex in exchange. i have also seen (including on here) misogynistic "jokes" originating from men about how women should put out if they have been bought a meal etc.

I wasn't saying all women, and I don't include myself in it either but I do frequently encounter examples of it.

MANATEEequineOHARA · 12/05/2009 23:43

I did some seriously stupid things when I was 18, but that is my life and my mistakes to make, this girl has obviously thought it through and planned it.
The influence of men in female prostitution is far more complex, pimps being among the vilest creatures on earth imo, men paying for sex not so.

tattifer · 12/05/2009 23:45

"women have been doing this for CENTURIES."

and it wasn't until the advent of judeo-christian beliefs that it was a problem for anyone!

didn't mean to post twice, got weird error message...

muffle · 12/05/2009 23:49

Yes and women have been being beaten up and raped and bought and sold and married off against their will for centuries too! These things are all connected! Just because it's only more recently that people have woken up to such inequality not being a good thing, doesn't mean it was all hunky-dory for everyone previously... it was never all that hunky-dory for women.

(Although I'd hesitate to align my feminist issues with prostitution with the Christian church! Hardly the most feminist of organisations. Many priests great users of prostitutes however...)

MANATEEequineOHARA · 12/05/2009 23:52

Muffle...feminist issues with prostitution??? You have issues with feminists?
Or do you mean you are (incorrectly) saying your issues with prostitution are feminist?

tattifer · 12/05/2009 23:55

muff ha ha - yes you're probably right!

I mean...

tattifer said people only got upset about prostitution with the advent of judeo-christian beliefs

I am upset about prostitution for feminist reasons (can't see how that is "incorrect" - but anyway)

I don't think my feminist take on prostitution has got anything to do with any church, and I think the christian church for example has a history of being a big employer of prostitutes so I'm about its "disapproval"

I can recognise the argument that prostitution is feminist and empowering. I think it's bollocks but I do realise some people think that - but there are other feminist views.

jemart · 12/05/2009 23:58

All those who seem to think there is nothing wrong with prostitution - Moral outrage aside (and I do find it abhorrent) prostitution is illegal in this country.
Now I'm no law expert so I don't know all the facts but there must be plenty of good reasons why the police are keen to stamp out such practices.

violethill · 12/05/2009 23:58

You know, I sometimes feel a little sorry for blokes, when the man-haters get on these threads.

Sometimes they're in a no-win situation.

I bet if this woman's efforts had attracted bids of just a few quid, there would have been uproar : 'Why aren't the bastards prepared to pay her a good rate?' ROFL

Trouble is muffle that all of our opinions, whether we like it or not are shaped by our culture. The prevailing attitudes. taboos, approvals, disapprovals etc native to for example the uk and most of europe are shaped by judeo-christian beliefs. Whether we like it or not.

tattifer · 13/05/2009 00:04

"Now I'm no law expert so I don't know all the facts but there must be plenty of good reasons why the police are keen to stamp out such practices."

For centuries - women can charge for sex. Men want it, women have it. Shit. Men don't like the power balance (church definitely didn't) so make it not the done thing. Ostracise the women who have this power to make their own wealth! job done.

MANATEEequineOHARA · 13/05/2009 00:04

So, you have no money and for whatever reason nowhere to sleep, you don't care a great deal about yourself at the time for reasons unconnected to men. A man offers you £60 to sleep with him, and have somewhere to sleep for the night, because his gf has left and he is missing sex.

Who is exploiting who? Is anyone? Would you agree and do it in the situation? Just interested in answers???

No, you're no law expert - prostitution is not illegal in the UK. Profiting from and controlling the actions of prostitutes is illegal (pimping, running a brothel) but being a prostitute is legal, as is using the services of a prostitute. Soliciting and kerb-crawling are also illegal.

Pimping/running a brothel is illegal because it is possible (though by no means invariable) that the women are in some way forced to work for the pimp/brothel, which is plainly wrong. Solicitation and kerb-crawling can involve unwilling members of the public, which is also plainly wrong. A contract entered into freely by a two (or more) consenting adults to exchange sex for money is legal.

OK, man is really quite attractive, and women is not homeless but has been stranded away from home after a fall out with friends.

muffle · 13/05/2009 00:09

Oh here we go SM.

I haven't been derisory, but now you are being.

Yes, I apologise, I did not say "some women" and I should have done. I meant some women, but I should have been clearer. But it was in the same being as if someone posted "men beat women up every day" - of course they would not mean all men, they would mean it is done by men every day. But yes, I could have spelt it out.

And yes since you ask, I do make a big effort not to accept any gender inequality in my life, to make sure everything between DP and me is financially equal and fair, and to be very aware of these things. That is because I am a rampant feminist! I'm not saying I'm better than other people, but I do think I enjoy more equality in my relationship and in my career than many women do. To point out that many women collude in inequality and misogyny is hardly breaking news. If you think that's me being unsisterly or patronizing - have a look around.

I won't reply to any more of your posts unless they are civil because I just can't be bothered with mudflinging with you.

scottishmummy · 13/05/2009 00:09

are you going to tweak and edit the wee story til you get the answer you want?

what next he is handsome philanthropic model?
