I can't decide whether this is very sad or quite enterprising. A bit of both I think.

What did amaze me is that a medical professional endorsed her virginity at a press conference!

story here - warning, it's in the DM!

OP posts:

How do you know she has sold her self respect? Or anyone but her for that matter?

tattifer · 12/05/2009 23:12

Don't tell me, you'd blame the bloke who got her addicted? Speak to addicts, you'll get a whole different picture. As for respect, no, not after they've left yet another sodding needle in the kiddies play park.

Vittoria · 12/05/2009 23:12

"Of course she was being exploited, her youth and in experience and her need for money and an education was exploited by a rich man who wanted access to her body. It's an exercise of power."

I'd say a pretty fair trade off actually.

tattifer · 12/05/2009 23:12

Sorry , last post for Paula

i would think desperation led to prostitution
not wanting an education so badly that you couldn't shelf stack for a couple of years first

MANATEEequineOHARA · 12/05/2009 23:14

Exactly what I am getting at Vittoria!

muffle · 12/05/2009 23:14

I'm aware of female-to-male DV and I know it's a problem. But male violence and aggression towards women is a much bigger problem. And I think the imbalance has got a lot to do with disrespect for women inculcated in men as they grow up and encounter prostitution and porn, and soak up the values of a society that says they are OK.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 12/05/2009 23:16

agree muffle

MANATEEequineOHARA · 12/05/2009 23:16

Quote from Annie Sprinkle

'The average American woman makes approximately $243 per week at her job. As a porn star in burlesque for example, I could make about $4,000 per week.

That same average American woman works about 40 hours per week at her job. That's her job outside the home. I only had to work about 17 hours per week. That gave me plenty of time to do other things I really enjoyed, such as travel, take classes and workshops, and spend all that money. Not all the sex I had was as a career necessity. I had sex with perhaps another 500 people for various other reasons. For example, kicks, thrills and fun was a big reason for me. Physical needs. I was a very sexual young woman. Barter. You can trade sex for just about anything -- jewelry, camera supplies, theatre tickets, even dentistry. And being that I'm a very generous, kind-hearted person, there were a lot of mercy fucks... '

scottishmummy · 12/05/2009 23:19

some of you see hegemony and misogny every where.dont agree with the digression that many men want to dominate and oppress women

appalled at the ease with which inaccurate statements are bandied about eg
"And we do have a society in which men physically oppress women and expect sex in return for financial input, even in "normal" relationships, and women play along with that. I presume you mean yourself?your acquaintances?your mum?your sister?

certainly not me.no siree.given that I am solvent, work, have savings and am financially independent.never have and never will compromise my integrity in way you insinuate

nor do I have such a fatalistic low opinion of other women that I believe men/society render them so weak and malleable.that they "play along" for financial input

violethill · 12/05/2009 23:22

hear hear scottishmummy!

I also like to believe that women are strong and clever and capable of making their own independent decisions. I am appalled at some of the patronising comments which suggest that women can't actually think for themselves.

I don't think she was being exploited, she knew what she was doing, all the 'pretty woman' stuff and wanting someone to look after her. I do think the guy is an utter creep and I don't think that women should have to even contemplate selling their bodies to make money. At the end of the day though, it is her choice. It's a sad story and personally I think the two of them are as bad as each other.

I wonder how much she got for her story from the DM? She did mention in the article that she hoped for more than the 10,000 Euros. Just sounds to me like she is bumping it up by selling her story and agreeing to see the guy again.

MANATEEequineOHARA · 12/05/2009 23:23

Playing along? AKA performance theory, with that comes the possibility of subversive repetition, through using normative gender performance as the stage upon which the 'script' can be subtly altered and challenged.

violethill · 12/05/2009 23:25

HG totally agree on that point. She's milking it for all she can. Exploited my arse!!

PortoPandemico · 12/05/2009 23:25

violet, this is a really tricky one I guess. We have been brought up in the Uk with all our history and cultural mores about what is right and wrong. In recent years, countries that have benn "under the thumb" of their governements have opened up to the west.

This shows its form in Russian oligarchs taking over half of London for example. These guys spotted an opportunity and bought up oil rights at communist prices and have since made a fecking fortune. We can say good on em I suppose, but Russia sees little benefit from their wealth and football franchises.

This girl, the one in the OP, lives under a similar regime. She, much like my chinese Step mother will take what they can to get ahead in the west. The tragic thing is that some bloke saw the pic, could afford to rescue her, but HAD to take her virginity.

"if she were an addict i would sympathise much more"

apologies if totally wrong, just wondering how far reaching your experience of addicts was.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 12/05/2009 23:29

too right violet
she looks riddled with shame and full of self loathing not

HolyGuacamole · 12/05/2009 23:29

Yes, he had to take her virginity because that was the agreement. Money for sex. Not only that, she was flown to Venice, did the old tourist thing and then had a nice time in a 5 star hotel. She asked for 'pretty woman', seems like that is what she got?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 12/05/2009 23:29

brought up by one

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 12/05/2009 23:30

dragged 'brought' up by one

violethill · 12/05/2009 23:30

We are all a product of the culture and history we were brought up in though. On a personal level and of course on a broader level. But within that context people do have choices - it's stupid to pretend they don't. The girl in the OP lives within a particular regime, but so do scores of other women and they don't all do what she did - it wouldn't be news if they did!

MANATEEequineOHARA · 12/05/2009 23:37

I find Ms Butler a lot of help, and I am a women

Having actually bothered to read the article linked I can see that she is also exploiting the DM and its readers, she sounds very clever

scottishmummy · 12/05/2009 23:37

she is misguided and attention seeking.he is sleazy

she sold herself(short)
he bought her
had to have a trophy for his cash.
a tokenistic trinket

like Madonna cant just altruistically help orphans and poor children in Malawi.no,she has to flash her cash and buy one

her money could build a hospital, staff a clinic.be utilised without need to take a desired prize
