Nickschick, I think you've misunderstood my post. I was by no means saying it's a good thing; I was presenting a context - i.e. saying that when + where it's been considered the norm, kids have tended to be more mature. Here + now kids aren't mature enough and so it's a bad thing.

Mrs schmaltzy im sorry i didnt intend to direct that you it was just at that point my own dh had said in some parts of india its quite normal and years ago 14 was normal to have children.

nickschick · 13/02/2009 19:33

I have no objections to them going out to having a laugh to having fun together but at 12 years old he needs to home at a decent time he needs to be parented not left to sleep at her home with his school uniform there ready for next day.....she needs to understand at 15 that sex makes babies!!! was nobody else surprised at how she was winding the baby quite harshly for a newborn imo throughout that video????

In this case very poor parenting has led to this sad sad sad situation and we will have yet another child not knowing its roots in poor baby Maisie.

nappyaddict · 13/02/2009 21:14

When I saw her winding the baby I actually thought hmm she seems to know what she's doing.

nickschick · 13/02/2009 21:16

I think for a baby that 'may' have wind she was handling her 'o' but for a teen with a new baby then i think gently is the key.

"And to say he can't be the father based on his appearance is pretty ."

Not appearance, it was the fact that the article specifically mentioned that his voice hadn't broken. Which suggests to me that he may not actually have reached puberty.

Besides- how many mumsnetters do you think would vilify a much younger girl who had been taken advantage of by an older man? Certainly not me- I would condemn the man in no uncertain terms if he was an adult! And if he was a 24-yo who slept with a 12yo, he would be likely to go to prison for it.

If he was a 15yo sleeping with a 12yo, I would say pretty well what I said of the girl in this case. Which is, the older person ought to be more responsible. If I thought my son was ever at risk of being involved with a girl who was too young I would spell out the consequences in no uncertain terms, and so I imagine would most of us.

solidgoldbullet4myvalentine · 13/02/2009 21:27

The families will have sold the story to make money, obviously - and bear in mind that given you're all already vilifying them for being on benefits, one can hardly blame them for taking the Sun's cheque - they are gonig to need it.
Though I am also a little sceptical about whether that boy is physically mature enough to father a child as he really doesnt look as though he has hit puberty yet. I also think that there may well be unpleasantness of some sort in the background of one or both children - allowing the boy to sleep over at the girls' house on a regular basis seems a bit strange for one thing. Who slept where on those nights, I wonder.

you can father a child before your voice breaks.

Just as you can get pregnant before you are get your first period. (only just before obviously)

I'm surprised at some of the ignorance on here.

next someone will say you can't get pregnant standing up

a 12 year old boy at my school become a father (well he was 13 when the baby came as was the mum )

Sidge · 13/02/2009 21:38

In most schools sex ed is done in Year 7 so this boy (and girl) would have had some sex ed lessons.

And a boy is physically capable of fathering a child during puberty - they need testosterone; it is possible that testosterone levels are high enough to produce sperm, but not high enough to trigger the other major physiological changes.

It's just so sad. Children having children. He should be out playing football and worrying about what's for dinner rather than worrying how much nappies cost.

tumtumtetum · 13/02/2009 21:39

The papers are always on and and about teenage pregnancy with regard to teenage mums living on benefits and getting pg for benefits etc etc with never a mention of the men/boys responsible.

A lot of people just seem to have been rather, well, bitchy about the girl, commenting on her looks etc.

I agree totalmisfit that this is only in the papers as the boy looks so young for his age.

AccidentalMum · 13/02/2009 21:41

I thought she was doing fine too (at winding).

Is it really so naive to not think it possible that he fathered the baby? That he has just been told that he did?

tumtumtetum · 13/02/2009 21:48

The person who has been on here who knows of them says that they have been going out for some time. From other things I have read it seems that they stayed the night at each others houses.

It seems a bit, I don't know, nasty to say that on top of all the other things to contend with that she at age 15 was fucking around behind his back and is now lying to him and her family and his family.

Why always imagine the absolute worst in people. They have made a mistake, they have probably not had great home lives if they are allowed to sleep over at that age. I just feel sorry for both of them.

AccidentalMum · 13/02/2009 21:48

X posted by a long way.

"you can father a child before your voice breaks."

I didn't say you can't. Only that it would be less likely. Of course if he has got to the stage where the sperm is in place, but not the voice, yes, then it could happen. But it is not that common.

tumtumtetum · 13/02/2009 21:51

It is probably not that common because not that many boys are having sex at that age...

cory · 13/02/2009 21:52

I can find it in me to feel sorry for both of them. But I still feel the older child needs to be more responsible than the younger. Nothing to do with being male or female.

"It is probably not that common because not that many boys are having sex at that age..."

In the days when noble children were married very young, it was uncommon for boys to father children this young. Girls much more likely to get pregnant of course.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 13/02/2009 21:55

I'm horrified by the suggestion that the best thing would be to get the baby adopted.

Should we get all babies born to fifteen year olds adopted as a matter of routine?

What surprises me about this, is that we are allowed to know anything about these 3 children at all. How comes when it comes to mothers being accused of MSbP, or family court custody battles, the welfare of the children is so paramount that it trumps the need for justice to be seen to be done, and we're not allowed to know anything about the cases at all, but when it comes to two very obviously vulnerable children and their baby, their welfare doesn't have to be considered and they can be splashed across the nation's media? We shouldn't even know about this.

tumtumtetum · 13/02/2009 21:57

They are both children though. She's one year above him at school, not much older in the scheme of things.

When noble children "married" young they were often promised rather than actually married and having sex weren't they? And don't children sexually mature younger these days due to diet etc.

Anyway and either way, I'm off to bed now, have fun all.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 13/02/2009 22:01

I've just read the biog of Edward I, hold on, will look up when he and Eleanor first had sex...

Sorrento · 13/02/2009 22:01

Hmmmm it crossed my mind that the boys father might be the babies father and they've done a Karen Matthews and thought how can we make money out of this.

cory · 13/02/2009 22:03

YOu do have a good point, Bella, we shouldn't be reading about this. But presumably their parents must have given permission for the interviews to happen.

chainstitch · 13/02/2009 22:03

why wouldnt the older child, be in trouble for seducing the 12 year old?

actually, i agree, i think it is the boys father who is probly the father, and they concocted the story.

namechanger101 · 13/02/2009 22:03

test

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 13/02/2009 22:14

Blardy hell Sorrento that thought flashed across my mind.

Karen Matthews has made us all suspicious hasn't she?

OK, Eleanor of Castile was 12 and Edward 15 when they married. They weren't supposed to consummate the marriage until she was much older, but they v. obviously did (recalcitrant teenagers disobeyed their elders. Plus ca change.)
