I knew this would happen.
I was discussing the high street with friends recently, and identified Adams as one to go
Never anyone in our local one.

SparklyBaubleFeast · 28/12/2008 22:51

did you?
i was thinking of Next.
expensive, to my mind, but well made and i do liek their clothes, so hope they are saved.

Doesn't really surprise me. I honestly thought my local store was gearing up to close down they had such a poor amount of stock after summer.

TwoIfBySea · 28/12/2008 22:56

I thought they had already gone under ages ago as all the ones I know (in nearby Livingston and Cumbernauld) closed months ago.

There are going to be a lot of empty spaces at the shopping centres.

treedelivery · 28/12/2008 23:01

Not surprised. Can't compete against the supermarkets. High street in my town going to be really really depressing!

I reckon Next and River Island. Not that we have those anyway.

Oh and Burtons.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 28/12/2008 23:02

It's no wonder they've gone belly up - I've never seen anything I like in there - and I can bring myself to buy childrens clothes pretty much anywhere!! Personally I think BHS are looking pretty wobbly atm.

SparklyBaubleFeast · 28/12/2008 23:05

bhs is horrible.

It's more like who isn't looking dodgy isn't it? I reckon Monsoon are safe. Boots and Marks seem ok. Thats probbly it!

Depressing. Bet Thorntons struggles too.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 28/12/2008 23:06

I hope Gap is ok - I luuurve Gap childrens stuff. Borders seem pretty sound don't you think? John Lewis too.

stuffing · 28/12/2008 23:07

have still got some vouchers for adams from ds xmas pressies will they be still accepting them i wonder

WishItWouldSnow · 28/12/2008 23:08

I did go past Mark One today and they looked very 'thin' on stock. Personally wouldn't miss this store though.....sorry to say

melpomene · 28/12/2008 23:09

Our local Adams closed last year.

IllegallyBrunette · 28/12/2008 23:11

Our Mark One has been on it's way to closing for ages now, and was virtually empty when I went in before xmas.

We also lost our Adams a while back too.

ja9ladiesdancing · 28/12/2008 23:11

i hate adams and BHS... wouldn't miss either. not going to be any stores left in my local centre at this rate though...

IllegallyBrunette · 28/12/2008 23:12

I agree about BHS. I only go into ours to look at the Tammy Girl stuff for dd1 but rarely buy anything as it is overpriced.

WishItWouldSnow · 28/12/2008 23:14

I do have my doubts about Next keeping going.

They don't seem to have been 'on trend' for a while now and seem quite pricy to me.

treedelivery · 28/12/2008 23:16

The town I live in will literally have a Boots and a Debs at this rate, as it's older people shops/cheaper shops. [think phone shops and 5 variations of Mark one, and only place on planet with no Starbucks] Bloody hour to nearest alternative too. Seems the mid range/better end high street types are doing better. You never know though.

Shoshe · 28/12/2008 23:22

The only 'named' shops we have are Boots, mcKays and Woolworths.

One gone.............

treedelivery · 28/12/2008 23:28

We live in the same sort of place Shoshe.

Next can go for me, clothes to make people look like they shop in Next. They have had the same linen trousers every summer for 10 years I'd say. As have Asda but for about third of price. And their kids clothes are never pure cotton or wool, lots of polyester etc. Overpriced.

WishItWouldSnow · 28/12/2008 23:30

And far too many logos that just say "I shop at Next and truly believe it is a designer item to be coveted"

Miaow

Quadrophenia · 28/12/2008 23:32

our adams closed last year as did our mark one...will be suprised if next go

treedelivery · 28/12/2008 23:33

Lol I feel a bit like that about it too.

And black boots. How many pairs do they think people can own? And tops that look like a shirt with a tank top over, which I like but soooooo many year in year out!

Panta · 28/12/2008 23:34

PLEASE PLEASE let Boden be next to go..and the Great little trading thingummy..and the White wotsit..and....Selfridges..and Costa-whack-to-drink-coffee...and...Starbucks-for-a-coffee too..and Cafe Nero-would-be-rolling-in-his-grave...PLEASE!! And every "card" shop....and..

treedelivery · 28/12/2008 23:36

Our Next doing really badly but think online doing good so I probably have a bit of skewed vision on it.

Like I can afford to shop anywhere anyway, never mind judge the style of places .
