mk1 has gone very down hill. i worked there 2 years ago and the stock was just getting rly nice. there was lots of items i liked. I went in there yesterday and the shop is a mess nothing is in the right sections its all very cheap and horrible looking, including a bunch of outfits that even the spice girls wouldnt of worn, its not suprising they have gone into admistration twice this year!

I always rated the quality of Adams stuff (although I avoided their mini-mugger/hooker ranges) and will be sad to see it go.

I think I read somewhere that Adams were linked with the children's clothes in Boots so maybe we'll get an increased range of clothing in Boots although they've always struck me as a bit expensive.

Do you think the passing on of second hand children's clothes via websites such as this and ebay has contributed in a small way to the drop in sales for Woolies (ladybird) and Adams ?

i've only bought one thing out of Adams for DS and tbh i didn't think much of it so i've never been back. too expensive. why go to adams when you can buy kids clothing at tesco or asda!
i'm just gutted about woollies...

went into my local adams store on tues as dd had £20 gv for xmas.had no clothes in 4-5 [dd's 4]so had to get 5-6.had no clothes all they had was nightwear at full price.ended up buying it just to use voucher.put it away until next year.

PMSL @ mini mugger/hooker ranges you should be on TV.
Surely PEACOCKS needs to go, unless all you can wear is viscose.
Dixons/currys are crap..argos is always cheaper and easier.
John lewis will be safe..phew.

Gap - they want £14 for a pair of baby pyjamas.

Boden is expensive- but the sales are good, and I know of boden clothes I have given away that are still being passed around.

Its much better to pay more and get quailtiy than primark tatt.

I found that boys vests and t shirts from Tesco and Asda have always been thinner compared to Adams and the seams twisted after just on wash making them a pain to try and iron. Hence ds1 sporting the "my mum's too busy to iron stuff" look.

I suspect that those retailers which go under will be primarily those:

  • which are heavily indebted/ high lease commitments/ very seasonal or working capital dependent (e.g. Woolworths, Zavvi, MFI); or
  • in a very commoditised marketplace, particularly those which compete with supermarkets (e.g. mk1, Adams, Officers Club); or
  • in niche/ specialist markets, particularly high end discretionary goods (e.g. Whittards, Wedgewood).

On that basis my money on those being at risk would be:

  • heavily indebted: Debenhams, JJB Sport, any owned by Icelandics (e.g. Principles, Oasis, Karen Millen, Whistles - looks like Blooming Marvellous is already going according to the FT)
  • commoditised marketplace: Burtons, River Island, JJB Sport, Dixons/ Currys, Waterstones, HMV and any mass-market childrenswear chains
  • niche or discretionary market: specialist single product shops from established brands like Tie Rack, to the more random ones like Past Times, that just seem to sell candles

Lots of Boots business comes from the prescriptions tho - in fact the lions share- so i really do not think Boots will suffer too much - more discount lines and less luxury lines my prediction. But they will not go under even if people stop buying lots of the toiletries. Maybe a few branch closures, redundancies?
