I think Homebase is going, they've just got rid of a whole layer of management.

LadyLauraStandish · 29/12/2008 18:56

Adams was the only shop that sold trousers ds1 would wear!!!! I'm stuffed now.

I think Homebase is dodgy and Next is rubbish anyway.

clumsymum · 29/12/2008 19:03

Adams have been struggling for ages, I heard they were in trouble in May/June time, so it was inevitable that they should go under, in this debarcle.

I can't see Boots going under, I think they were re-financed by a German buy-in last year? Don't forget that they get a lot of money from the pharmaceutical sales. They might pull back the range a little, but I'd guess the stores will still be here in a years time.

Dixons/Currys/PC World are all the same group. My guess is that they'll close one of the brand names down to reduce costs.

I have my suspicions that Comet'll go bust tho'.

ComeWhineWithMe · 29/12/2008 19:06

I thought Adams was going to go my mum was going to get vouchers for my new nephew and I told her not to chance it ..glad I did now .

Other places I think may go

Blockbusters

Dixons

River Island

Body shop

Etam .

Its so depressing.

ComeWhineWithMe · 29/12/2008 19:07

Scrap etam I meant evans .

JollyPirate · 29/12/2008 19:09

What about Laura Ashley - never anybody in our local shop and even their discounted stuff is mega expensive.

ComeWhineWithMe · 29/12/2008 19:10

Noone is ever in ours either JP .

lunavix · 29/12/2008 19:13

I'm not surprised if adams go as their stuff is soooo overpriced - and is peacocks going that way too? Always thought they were super budget-style for kids clothes, went in there today as completely broke but ds needed a pair of jeans and they wanted £16!!! He's only 4

lunavix · 29/12/2008 19:14

Also wondering about Blockbusters too. Noone I know goes in there as it's so expensive compared to online rental.

clumsymum · 29/12/2008 19:17

lunavix, been in Next today and got super jeans for DS (age 10) for just £9, regular stock, not sale price.

I wouldn't be seen dead in Peacocks, their stuff looks like it will fall apart after 3 washes anyway.

lunavix · 29/12/2008 19:19

I only went in there as I'm sure last time I was in there you could get tops for like £2 and jeans for £4. Incidentally, you can't! Everyone who's a bit broke round here buys bits from tescos and there's a bit of stigma to it so I was aiming for something a bit less recognisable...

£9 not bad though...

SilentTerror · 29/12/2008 21:24

Sorry didn't mean Boots to go bust, just scale down somewhat.
Not sure about Superdrug,though.
Agree re comet/currys etc.
Laura Ashley could go,definitely.
River Island quite popular with fashionistas though, but perhaps Arcadia Group(Philip Green) will scale down.Dorothy Perkins maybe go,keep Topshop??
Could lose BHS definitely, place is drab, cheap and nasty.

nappyaddict · 29/12/2008 23:36

H&M and M&S do cheapish kids clothes aswell as Next.

christywhisty · 30/12/2008 12:29

my dc's are 11 and 13 now but I haven't been able to shop in Adams for about 5 years. Ds grew out of their sizes at 8, school uniform was always awful quality and didn't last 5 minutes.
DD on the smaller size but skirts/trousers too big round the waist. Even the elasticated skirts fell off her. Tops too wide and short in the body.
Only high street shop that now caters for DS is Debenhams and sometime M&S but they very rarely have his size and he can get into small man clothes.
I get most of DD's clothes from Next, La Redoute/Verbaudet.
I also found Tchibo quite good for cheap basics

Marne · 30/12/2008 12:33

I hope Next doesn't go, i like their childrens clothes , we have lost Adams, woolworths and MK1, BHS is always empty as is Evens, we lost Etam a few years ago.

MumHadEnoughTinsel · 30/12/2008 12:47

Why does everyone think Homebase is going under? That worries me, I thought they were ok because they're the same company as Argos and they've picked up lots of business from MFI going under.

And I've just ordered a kitchen from them so being optimistic for my own sake!

Meglet · 30/12/2008 14:53

our laura ashley is always empty, they can't be doing well these days. ditto. BHS and Dotty P's.

I hope thorntons doesn't go, but the credit crunch can take hotel chocolate which is boring and poncy.

Meglet · 30/12/2008 15:02

just read that USC have called in the administrators too. They do Miss Sixty / Diesel stuff I think. too expensive for me these days, even Top Shop is a splurge.

poshwellies · 30/12/2008 15:08

USC website says it's trading normally and all orders will be fulfilled.

Heated · 30/12/2008 15:17

Given how few children's clothes retailers there are left on the high street, Adams really frustrates me!

It does/did occasionally sell good quality boys trousers, especially cords very similar to Boden's imo and some nice boys tshirts for the summer, but unfortunately it was dwarfed by too much pink tat & mini-mugger all sold cheaper elsewhere.

There IS a market out there that Adams should have tapped in to - lots of threads on here asking for brightly coloured, good quality children's clothes not covered in skulls or slogans - they would have been inundated.

gv · 30/12/2008 15:33

I was in Adams today. Got a load of stuff half price, really pleased! I don't think their stuff is too bad, it lasts better than primark!Anyway they were swearing blind they were not in financial trouble and most of the shop was full price stuff, so they are certainly not clearing out yet.

AnneOfAvonlea · 30/12/2008 16:29

I was in Adams today too and got lots 1/2 price. They wouldnt offer me a store card at the till as they said it would be useless and they weren't bothered anyway. Very sad indeed.

ja9ladiesdancing · 30/12/2008 20:04

it struck me today that despite there being lots of these stores i don't care for, i don't want to be left with just asda or tesco...

RubberDuck · 30/12/2008 20:21

Can't see Homebase going under - as belts tighten more people will do their own house repairs/improvements rather than getting someone in to do it.

SparklyBaubleFeast · 30/12/2008 22:35

just read tonight - yesterday's paper - Clintons cards looking dogdy - someone mentioned that on this thread already
