Hi, to make it easier for people who are finding this subject very distressing, we're going to keep all Baby P posts in one thread. If you'd like to discuss this subject, then here is the thread to do so. We'll go on the other threads and link to this one. Thanks very much.

...which brings me back to the question of what can we - the public - do to try to prevent this happening? Badger our MPs? Write to papers? Donate to children's charities? Become social workers? It would be good to channel this awful sick feeling I have whenever I think of this, into something constructive.

tiredemma · 17/11/2008 17:14

Im a bit at the 15 year old girl who witnessed all this going on and failed to report it to anyone.

In fact im at anyone involved in this. Fuckwits, the lot of them.

the 15 yo girl really got to me. She didn't want to cause a split with her BF apparently. Jesus. Who is breeding people with this utter lack of conscience, or humanity ffs?

CrushWithEyeliner · 17/11/2008 17:27

Kellsmc I have volunteered with my local Homestart which helps families struggling in the area. It's 2 hours a week and you may make a difference to a child in Baby Ps circumstance.

It's 2 hours, it's a start,

tiredemma · 17/11/2008 17:27

I know crush- how can you witness what she did and not tell anyone? You would have to be brain dead to not know that its behaviour out of the ordinary.

Im amazed at the ignorance and sheer stupidity of everyone involved in this.

RaspberryBlower · 17/11/2008 17:29

Well done CWE.

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 17/11/2008 17:29

agree mamag

its bollocks all this keep kids with family

i had two abusive parents in 70/80's

when one left was left with another

20 years on i reported their crimes and social services are all 'shock/horror

at the time no one gave a toss

school did not either

I would have LOVED to have been taken out of my 'family' home
some family

CrushWithEyeliner · 17/11/2008 17:32

I am so so sorry NAA. What an utter failure the system is at times.

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 17/11/2008 17:37

sorry sounded a bit me me me but i do think that a modern system could work better than this

the home is so so often NOT the best place for children

are you qualified in some field crush - or just volunteer as a 'lay -person' ???

CrushWithEyeliner · 17/11/2008 17:42

just a volunteer - but I worked assisting psychiatrist for many years who specialised in Child protection issues and worked with SS and the police. I have been privvy to some distressing stories so to speak and been wanting to do something to "help" for years.

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 17/11/2008 17:43

fantastic and fab on you!!!

wessexgirl · 17/11/2008 17:44

NAO, yes, I'm slightly baffled by the whole emphasis on avoiding care proceedings at all costs.

It's all very well to say that children who have been in care are more likely to fail at school/become drug abusers/end up in jail etc. Might that not have something to do with the hideous emotional and psychological damage they have already suffered at the hands of their families?

I wonder if a proper study has been done setting the outcomes of children from care against those of children from specifically abusive/neglectful families who were left with them - rather than all children. If so, I would love to see the findings.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2008 18:02

I think some folk have been taking "Minority Report" just a little too seriously.......

Thanks MNHQ. Better late than never.

"the 15 yo girl really got to me. She didn't want to cause a split with her BF apparently. Jesus. Who is breeding people with this utter lack of conscience, or humanity ffs? "

Are you referring to yesterdays NOTW..wasn't this girl babyp's sister..? if so your answer would be "the mother" and look at what she did...

I can't believe that so many of you are bickering between yourselves...ffs mner's can't even agree or unite on such an awful event...

Mercy · 17/11/2008 18:53

I think the 15 year old girl is/was the girlfriend of the 36 year old lodger.

shhhh · 17/11/2008 19:03

ah right...15 v 36 ...

Apologies if this aspect has been discussed already.

I haven't been reading the papers but I have found the reporting of the baby P case in recent days extremely distressing on the mainstream tgelevision and radio news. By this I mean repeately seeing the artist's impression of his injured face and body, the bloodstained clothes etc. Also this morning's reporting on the person who knew the boyfriend describing in detail exactly how he tortured animals - I found this so upsetting as I was then able to flesh out in my imagination what suffering had been inflicted on the little boy, which is what I had been trying to avoid. I have been reduced to tears in public today at thoughts of how he died, unloved and in pain.

I don't have any personal experience of abuse but I became a mum this year and prior to this I don't think I've ever felt as affected by stories of child cruelty etc.

I'm not saying I want to bury my head in the sand and only see a "nice fluffy bunny" view of the world. I just can't remember this level of gory detail in previous cases eg Victoria Climbie etc.

The question remains: how much is it necessary for us to know in order to ensure: a) proper justice for the killers and b)for a call to action for urgent legislation or review of practice, on the failings in the social work system to prevent a similar thing happening again. These are the only 2 poitive outcomes that can come from this sad, sad case. Whipping up the "angry mob" mentaility in the tabloids is totally pointless.

AngeChica · 17/11/2008 19:29

x post Skydance, I feel the same.

shhhh · 17/11/2008 19:40

ange, not child abuse by an adult..but...the jamie bulger case brought similar publicity..

FairLadyRantALot · 17/11/2008 19:47

With the regards of that 15y old not reporting anything....tbh, I have not really read anything much about this case...I only know the rough outline of it all...but, if she was 15 together with a 36y...then there might be issues anyway?
Whilst I do know that a big agegap doesn't necessarrily mean bad knews....but well...maybe in this case there is....also is anyhting known about the girls history? Because, who knows such going ons might have be the sad norm for her....!
Obviously all just possible ifs....but....well, a 15y might have been truely just to scared....depending on her situation.

TBH I think the best way to reduce crimes might be working with those who could be vulnurable to become criminals, etc....!

Wessexgirl, it would be interesting to see if such study has been done, or statistics have been created for this.

NotanOtter....so, so sorry to hear about your experience
Brings me to a conversation I had recently with some idiotic stupid unintelligent woman. We came to speak about my part time Job (working with children who are placed in residential care, because of their challenging behaviours....usually caused by abuse and neglect....)...she asked what ages, me 10-18y....she: well, they should be with their parents....me: that is not always in the interest of the child....oh yes it is, they just making all these things up, I had a friend that had her son taking away from her because she accidently dropped him as a Baby (me : ) ...anyway, all I could say is, that maybe when people stop starving their 2 year olds and let them roam in the bins to find food....and worse....maybe then she would be correct in thinking the way she thinks....but until then, I would never be able to agree...

It made me sooooo angry at the time...the casenotes we get can be so upsetting....sadly soemtimes, impo, Kids are far to long left with completely unfit parents....and I can't, personally, see the benefit....sigh...
anyway, went off on one then, sorry!
