I back down completely after reading the link
Hectare posted.

And I apologise again

Blandmum · 12/07/2008 17:52

expat, and also to know that if you have children there is a 50:50 chance that you have passed this dreaful disease on to them.

It is just such a bastard disease, it really it.

Poor bloody woman, she has enough to put up with as it, without people around her being arseholes

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 12/07/2008 17:52

Try facing this sort of ignorance day in day out skribble. I've had quite enough of it in RL today to be honest.

Then remain calm when confronted by it in type.

2shoes · 12/07/2008 17:53

I have to say it is not easy. I am used to dd and her rather unique eating habits. but am well aware that not everyone feels the same. so if out I put her back to other diners when she is eating(better for her anyway as she would be too nosy) solves the problem for us. but have to admit that when I go to her friends house and have to sit next to him it is hard. but I just cope with it and concentrate on the other people.
life is hard enough when you have a disability/illness without people making it harder imo.

As I said earlier, it's not just about the restaurant owner, it's more about the people who go to his restaurant and object to Catherine Blow being there.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 12/07/2008 17:54

OMDB- We need to try and set up something like that cinema club here. I would love to take ds1 to the cinema- think he would be blown away by it, but haven't dared yet.

expatinscotland · 12/07/2008 17:55

'I think when the whole country becomes more tolerant of SN we will also become more normalised to it and then it will cease to be an 'issue' or 'problem' to more people, as it will just be normal.'

Especially because as lulu pointed out, it's just a car crash or accident away for anyone AND will become more prevelant as people live longer and develop diseases of old age that compromise how they live.

DarrellRivers · 12/07/2008 17:55

For the love of God, she is not spitting, she cannot control her mouth properly so that when she eats she is a bit messy.
FGS.
That is all.
Like DC are messy sometimes.
She is not spitting, like footballers and rude youths
It is beyond her control
Give the woman some respect you heathens
Some of you people need to learn some empathy.
And this could happen to any of you lot, an accident leaves you in a wheelchair, etc etc
My God [head in hands]

wannaBe · 12/07/2008 17:55

Wow, what a bunch of ignorant narrow minded insensitive bigots there are on this thread.

So the woman lost him business? Well not before she apparently paid approximately £9600 into it over the past two years. £9600 (£400 a month) and he tells her she can?t come back but he?ll keep taking her money anyway. .

This woman has a degenerative illness. An illness which Is killing her slowly, and in a way which most of us wouldn?t even allow a dog to suffer. And probably in a few months she won?t be able to go out any more. So presumably she was enjoying the time she has left by going to eat in her favourite restaurant. In time she won?t be able to do that any more. In time she won?t be there any more. But the restaurant, if it is any good, will still be there, he and his wife and his family will still be there and they will presumably continue to make a profit.
I don?t believe that so many customers left that he was losing money, I really don?t. She wasn?t there from morning till night, she ate there once a day. So where were the punters for the rest of it?

As for those being put off by what presumably is a bit of dribbling on the floor (I?m sure the woman wasn?t deliberately spitting but that her increasing disability has made eating difficult) you?d better hope that none of you are ever diagnosed with a degenerative illness, or any of your family, or friends. Because really there but for the grace of God go any of us really.

Hecate · 12/07/2008 17:56

Hectare?? Feck me woman, I know I'm a big lass, but that's a bit unnecessary.......

foxymolly · 12/07/2008 17:57

I am not anti SN.

I just didn't understand the whole spitting thing.

OverMyDeadBody · 12/07/2008 17:57

jimjams investigate your local independant or arts cinemas if you have any, most seem to run a saturday kids club where it is generally understood it will be noisy and full of little kids anyway so people tend to be mor tolerant! At ours it's £3 per child and the adults go free so it doesn't feel like you've wasted a small fortune if it's really noisy either. I personally love the atmosphere and so does DS.

foxymolly · 12/07/2008 17:58

whoops!

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 12/07/2008 18:01

OUr arts cinema is a bit too arty iykwim.

I did email the big one recently and they said it was fine- we could have it for an event- but then we seemed to get crossed wires/life got in the way. I think it's something the NAS could organise (but also open to those with other disabilities). I would love to find a shouty place as then I could take ds1.

Poor ds2 has only been to the cinema once (he's 6) because it's so hard to organise a time he can go with one of us whilst someone else has ds1 (and ds3 when he was younger). We must try and do it over the summer. To be able to have a family day out at the cinema is one of those 'wish I could do' things. Along with sit on the beach as a family.

OverMyDeadBody · 12/07/2008 18:03

As foxy has so brilliantly demonstrated on this thread, one of the biggest obstacles people with SN and parents/family/carers of people with SN still face is ignorance, and that is very sad.

I used to hate but delight at going to resturants with peter when he was on his LVAD. the looks of wonder at this noisey machine, would often turn to disgust when people realised that they could see his BLOOD moving around in the machine. If his top rode up to shows his dressings that would cause more stares. If he started beeping, causing me to leap out of my seat top check if it was just a battery change or a serious problem would get people staring even harder.

damn i miss the disabled life

anyway, restuarnt owner was wrong IMO.

jimjam, i used to work i na supermarket coffee shop with a lad with LD, and he was the sweetest bloke ever. he came to my wedding and won over a few people there. I miss him. he doesnt work there anymore, so i dont see him about anymore.

WasStealthPolarBear · 12/07/2008 18:06

How awful for this woman that her presence is considered offputting
Agree with whoever said she can't be any more of a H&S risk than a small child or some (not all I realise) elderly people with physical difficulties.

Hecate · 12/07/2008 18:08

ahh lulu. Always so soothing. Is it very wrong that I am picturing myself being cuddled into your ample bosom?

WasStealthPolarBear · 12/07/2008 18:08

Also agree that she has rights to go out in public (the shock!) and people should just get over it!
DH's grandad had cancer that affected his mouth, it made hi very self conscious t the point where he didn't go out and didn' want to see anyone other than family

zippitippitoes · 12/07/2008 18:09

i think catherine blow is probably exceptional in the respect of her being a confident woman...many people would have given up
sooner
it is sad that there seems to be a lack of gumption on the part of the restaurateur to have even talked to her

lulumama · 12/07/2008 18:14

as long as i have my pinny on , hecate !

I thought even with the lack of substance in the article that the spitting was due to the illness, and was food she was having trouble swallowing.
I was being honest that I would probably be put of my own food, especially if it as a small place. But as I said I certainly would be asking for her to be removed, I would probably remove myself if it was bothering me.
I just thought it was perhaps not as black and white as the newspaper made out about how he dealt with it all.
