Andy Burnham just doesn't get it does he, we don't want anymore migrants/illegals put anywhere not in rich or poor areas we want to stop them coming here full stop.

As with different tax rates for Brexiters and Remainers, I can see a few logistical problems with this plan.

I am from a city, I have always lived in cities. People in cities are far less stranger averse than people in the country, or even the suburbs. The next asylum seeker I see is a potential new friend. I wouldn't know what they would look like anyway. How do you know which people are asylum seekers and which are not?

That’s fine, you don’t need to know. Burnham should just use high Guardian reading areas first to avoid protest.

Ukrainians were offered temporary sanctuary with time limited visas, with the expectation that they return home when safe to do so. The visas were not designed to offer permanent residence in the UK and time spent under the scheme does not count towards indefinite leave to remain. Ukrainians were required to prove their identity before entering the country, certainly in the vast majority of cases. Also, how many hosts agreed to take in young, male Ukrainians rather than women and children?

'Ukrainians were required to prove their identity before entering the country,'

But they are allowed to enter the country freely so why wouldn't they? It is only because we have stopped non-Ukrainian AS legally entering the country that we have had a problem with boat arrivals.

I did ask how you personally differentiate between asylum seekers and non asylum seekers.

Well the use of the barracks which I believe are being protested against in Piddington is not unknown.

Everywhere Labour tries they get protests. So perhaps a different tack, take your lead, sort areas into media readership for better results.

They will private bus the young males to towns with shops and have their own medical facilities in the barracks, visiting GPs, etc. This is important because some/most of those males will have HIV, TB, hepatitis and syphilis. Those first 3 need extensive and expensive treatment on the NHS and it would be too much for a village GP to be expected to cope with.

Maybe stick with “some” rather than “most”.
These health conditions would be treated at a specialist clinic, for example a sexual health clinic, rather than a GP, just as they would be for any of the 400 residents diagnosed with any of them.

Lol /so you saying ‘white’ people are ‘more evolved’ than ‘brown’ people????????
So you are saying that brown oriole are a more primitive life form??????

Never heard anthing so nonsensical (and blatantly offensive and racist my life 😂😂😂😂😂

There are a few schemes like this. I housed a young Sudanese man for a year, and it was fine, he was fine.
There’s some really dehumanising language cropping up on this thread and it’s troubling.

Edited

For a year?
How worthy and magnanimous.
Did you wholly support him -all expenses/all his living costs/language lessons/transport/education or training/for healthcare?

After that year was he working and paying tax, paying his own rent?

I don’t think posters are trying to dissuade you from being keen, rather it makes sense to match the accommodation to where people feel as you do.

And then watch as they squeal, like Rachel Maskell.

The charity supported him with expenses. I helped him find bits of volunteering work.
I’ve kept in touch with him and he’s now working and living in rented accommodation.
You see, if you actually bother to talk to these people you discover they’re not so bad after all. Why don’t you try it?

So working full time and claiming no benefits?

Mugsey62 · 16/08/2026 14:22

So if you were privy to the list of people who were there as asylum seekers you would be able to differentiate, but what if a couple of them walked down to the high street to splash out some of the £5000 a week they receive on a bar of Cadbury's dairy milk, how would you recognise that they were asylum seekers?

I’m sure he’s great, can he afford to pay rent himself or is it subsidised by benefits?

I think there are too many though and the employment market isn’t great atm.

Don't be silly. People with white skin evolved from people with brown skin. No mention of white people being more evolved. When H. Sapiens arrived in Europe c45 million years ago they would have had black skin.

Light skin evolved relatively recently in human history. While early humans who left Africa tens of thousands of years ago had dark skin, major genetic mutations for pale skin (such as in the SLC24A5 and SLC45A2 genes) swept through European populations primarily between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago, during the Neolithic agricultural transition. src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/HFPcZh7_elY" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen> 1, , 4, 5]

Key Stages of Skin Pigmentation Evolution

  • Original Ancestors: Early human ancestors in Africa had dark skin to protect against intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation after losing their body hair roughly 1.2 million years ago. 1,
  • Early Migration: When modern humans first arrived in higher-latitude regions like Europe 40,000 years ago, they surprisingly retained darker skin tones for a long time, as seen in ancient hunter-gatherer remains from 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. 1, 2, 3]
  • The Dietary Shift: The transition to farming introduced a cereal-heavy diet low in vitamin D. This created a strong evolutionary pressure for lighter skin, which absorbs more UV light to synthesize vitamin D under weak sunlight. 1, 2, ]
  • Genetic Spread: Pale skin traits multiplied quickly as early Anatolian farmers and later Bronze Age pastoralists mixed with local European populations, making light skin common across the continent only in the last several thousand years. src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/todDidXVUDs?start=22" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen> 1, ,

If you don’t see how biased the Guardian is then it must be because it fits your personal worldview. All these outlets are biased af just in different directions

Yes.. The Guardian is The Daily Mail for the left. Hilarious they can't see it. Well, shocking really but that is human nature after all. Confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance etc. Usual stuff.

I’m sensing some pushback on Burnham targeting Guardian areas with this.

He needs a way to avoid protests, you wouldn’t protest would you? It makes sense to capitalise on that.

Are you a yes ok for more people?

Not sure it's any of your business, but I'm amenable so why not indulge your curiosity. I get news from many sources. We don't have a TV so it's only online sources, or the odd paper (rarer and rarer). Apple News (a few sources therein), guardian, daily mail, metro, times, telegraph, al jazeera, new statesman, bbc. the odd foreign news source often in the usa (though most of these are awful). And more.

Asylum seekers aren't allowed to work...

Then he should be fully supported by the (oh-so-generous !!) PP until his asylum claim is agreed or denied since she is claiming to be so virtuous. Is hardly commendable to keep him a year than quietly palm him off on the tax payer and take up accommodation that could be used for someone legally here.

Asylum seekers aren't allowed to work...

Perhaps so. We have this data though

Foreigners claim £1bn a month in benefits

Experts suggested the increase reflected a surge in the number of asylum seekers being granted refugee status and in net migration.

Foreign nationals become eligible for Universal Credit and other benefits on the same terms as British citizens once they are granted either indefinite leave to remain or refugee status.

“Migrants know that if they can make it to the UK, they will be allowed to stay. As long as that is true, we’ll see more and more coming. Our soft-touch welfare state makes this worse.”

Graham Stringer, a senior Labour backbencher and former leader of Manchester City Council, said that such vast spending on foreign claimants should not be a priority. He said: “Given the state of the country’s finances, everything has to be looked at and reassessed. This expenditure [on foreign claimants] in my opinion is not a priority.
