Said it before. Will say it again. And will keep saying it. Bad people are bad. There is no ethnic or religious pre-determinant if badness, nor will we somehow magic up some kind of utopian crime free society by blaming people of one skin colour, nationality or religion.
We'll only get one by healing divisions, not creating more.

My sympathies to anyone affected by what's happened in Edinburgh.

Thanks for starting a thread on this, @Blightfitting . I'd completely missed this news.

Happened last night apparently:
Five injured in suspected anti-Muslim attacks after armed man roamed Edinburgh streets

Topless man with knife with face blurred

Five injured in suspected anti-Muslim attacks after armed man roamed Edinburgh streets

Two people were injured close to a mosque and a man was later seen battering the door of a pizzeria as members of the public run away.

I came on here earlier expecting to see a thread about this but couldn't see anything. That this horrific incident has gained such little attention or care on MN is very sad and very worrying

PerkingFaintly · 20/06/2026 20:24

Five people injured in three attacks with an axe miles apart across the city.

Motivation unclear as yet, but attacker told police (as they held him down) he was "protecting the country".

The first attack was near a mosque, but more info needed to know if that was relevant.

suburberphobe · 20/06/2026 20:26

Scary as shit.

First the riots in Belfast and now this.....

PurpleLovecats · 20/06/2026 20:28

It’s a horrendous situation and so scary.

WilliamsandWatsonTooLateNSoul · 20/06/2026 20:50

Scary AF not protecting the country
He's a fucking nut.

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2026 20:53

It was initially only reported on the BBC Scotland page and only recently updated to suspected anti-Muslim attack.

Other media outlets were even slower to pick it up.

Yep.

I mean, it's nice not to have the multiple 1000-post threads of wild misinformation and hatred.

But the contrast in reaction is striking.Hmm

Doubtless such threads will be incoming as soon as someone's worked out how to spin this against their preferred list of Targets of Hatred, and push their own particular One Simple Answer To Every Known Problem.HmmHmm

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2026 21:20

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has posted about the Edinburgh knife attack.

"The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. There is no place for hatred and violence against Muslims. I know it is not who we are as a country"

Daily Mail tiny bit oh and no comment section.
Funny that.

We can pretty much always blame people of one sex, though, when it comes to wielding axes and knives.

CagedBirdInACage · 20/06/2026 21:32

Horrific attack, my thoughts are with those hurt and their families. Also Muslim communities around the UK, they must be feeling very scared right now, I hope we see swift measures from Starmer to help keep them safe.

Pretty sure that the multiple 1000-post threads when it's a brown-skinned attacker aren't concerned about his sex.

But you're right. We have a male violence problem in this country. And when people like Farage call for 'cold, hard rage' from his predominantly male supporter base, it really doesn't help.

Given recent threads on here about similar attacks I am very surprised to see how little attention this attack has garnered. I found this thread because I looked for it after reading about the attack else where. I was wondering if I was missing another thread somewhere in here?

Has Kier Starmer given a speech on it yet?

The Home Secretary has released a statement.

Nigel surprisingly quiet. Possibly waiting for instructions from Moscow and/or his crypto donor buddies.

Keir Starmer has also released a statement

Edinburgh attack
CagedBirdInACage · 20/06/2026 21:53

I just saw that this happened 24hrs ago? So weird that it's only hitting the news now, especially when the man was arrested at the scene? Other attacks like Golders Green had days of rolling news coverage pretty much straight from the off, I wonder why the media has been so quiet on this?

Starmer is only making a statement almost 24hrs after the attack too? Very strange.

The quietness is probably something we should have more of. It's the inconsistency that bothers me. I wish all attacks were treated like this one is. No rolling news, no wild speculation, nobody trying to make political capital.

I don't use X anymore but if anyone wants to check the comments on Mahmood's statement, here is the link

This is the first time that I am hearing of this attack, and I watched the news this morning. Yes, it is strange.

Yes the inconsistency is very odd, I'm wondering is there a reason for it? Ambulances got rolling news coverage but 5 actual people don't? Starmer releases a statement about burnt vehicles the same morning but waits 24 hours in the case of 5 people? It just seems so out of the ordinary that I feel there must be a reason for it?

Most knife attacks in Scotland don't make the national news, there's loads in Edinburgh.
This one didn't make it onto Mumsnet and isn't being treated as a terror attack, Just another isolated mentally unstable man surely?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c89kk0841pwo

A block of flats clad in blue and white. Police cars line the residential streets and there is police tape blocking off the area, tied to a lamppost. Two police officers stand on the pavement.

Man charged with attempted murder after Edinburgh knife incident

The 23-year-old appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in private, made no plea and was remanded in custody.

Counter terrorism police have taken over the case, do they do that when there is no terrorism suspected?
