Because there might be another attack? How terrifying

from bbc:

Police said they declared "Plato" moments after first hearing about the incident.

Operation Plato is a set of responses by the emergency services to large-scale incidents including "marauding terrorist attacks".

When police declare Operation Plato, the other emergency services such as the ambulance service then have protocols that they follow.

For example NHS trusts will activate their major incident plans.

To those Jewish mumsnetters reading this- you have my condolences and support. If you are angry, I share that anger. If you are afraid, I want to be part of a better world where you do not have to feel that way. I stand with you.

I meant in terms of this thread, which I'd expected was about sadness for other human beings rather than politics.

I agree with you. if you think for one moment that this will end with the Jews then you’re wrong. This is absolutely political and the government, media, social media are 100% to blame.

We are living in a country divided by hatred.

Totally agree.

He recognised Palestine as a state a matter of days ago and this happens 😖 he’s toast

I don't see why he should be. Recognising the state of Palestine or not would have made no difference.

We should recognise the rights and sufferings of the Palestine people.

We should also condemn the astrocities that Hamas have commited.

We should also condemn the genocide that the state of Osrael is currently committing.

We should be condemming acts of terror like this one.

No but being seen to recognise a terrorist state inspiring attacks on our own soil and citizens might be a problem, no?

Absolutely horrific I have made a donation to https://cst.org.uk/. It is a small gesture but it's something I can do

Precisely.
Nearly three years ago, charges were dropped against several men who drove around Jewish areas of North London shouting antisemitic abuse.
We have an A&E doctor still being allowed to practice despite clearly antisemitic posts on social media.
A Jewish man was advised by police not to cross the road through a pro-Palestine rally (and various outlets pretzeled themselves into making this 100% his fault).

I have Jewish friends - who will today be keeping Yom Kippur - who are considering leaving the UK. Back in the summer, I urged them not to. Now, not so sure.

I am so, so sad that my country has come to this.

@PurpleThistle7 best wishes to you.

No, no, no it’s not them who should have to leave 😡

SidewaysOtter · 02/10/2025 13:52

To the Jews on this thread posting their experiences of antisemitism, I believe you. To those saying they hide their religion and culture out of fear, I am truly sorry that you are in that position, it is completely unacceptable that you're made to feel like that.

That this is contributed to by the sort of people who would pride themselves on their progressiveness but chant 'Nazi' at anyone who has a view with which they disagree, and who don't seem to be able to draw a parallel between their behaviour/that of those they support and the antisemitism that has been allowed to run unchecked in the UK, culminating in today's atrocity....well, I have no words.

SerendipityJane · 02/10/2025 13:52

We are living in a country divided by hatred.

Well yes. But that is sadly nothing new.

soupyspoon · 02/10/2025 13:53

Im furious this is on our shores, furious that our country is becoming as divisive and intolerant as america or other countries like that.

Ive said so many times these people who support Palestine as a political entity, by virtue supporting Hamas' right to exist, support a right wing dangerous despotic regime but will cite themselves as the good and the virtuous, tolerant and anti discriminatory. Well why the hell do you want Hamas to be successful then? Or any Islamic regime?

I agree with this. It doesn't have to all or nothing as all can be true at once.

Lampzade · 02/10/2025 13:55

The sad thing is that anti semitism has become ‘acceptable’.
There are those who feel emboldened to say whatever nasty thing they want to about Jewish people . They honestly don’t think there is anything wrong with it .

I am just fed up tbh. Fed up with anti semitism, fed up with racism against immigrants , fed up with all the hate.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 02/10/2025 13:56

Jujujudo · 02/10/2025 13:24

Me and my children were caught up in a “peaceful” protest in London one Saturday. We encountered a burning doll of a hook nosed rabbi with people dancing around it. We heard chants like: we we are all Hamas! And a group of girls started hissing when I walked past (I have a small Star of David necklace) which I later found out was meant to be the sound of the gas chambers. My kids were terrified and I’m too short to be able to see over people so my teenage son had to lead us to safety. I felt threatened, unsafe and intimidated and eff of if you proclaim to give a shit about Palestinians. These people hate Jews. That’s all.

I’m so sorry you and your family have experienced that. It’s disgusting these marches still carry on and disturbing some of the marchers dont understand the implications of what they are doing. Please know you do have love and support from outside the Jewish community. I’m so very sorry

soupyspoon · 02/10/2025 13:57

I wonder if he was being monitored under prevent. They'll need to look into whether this was predicted and whether it could have been stopped

defrazzled · 02/10/2025 13:57

@reginaldronnierara don't be so crass, that is a disgusting thing to say.

I beg your pardon?

StarlightRobot · 02/10/2025 13:58

@soupyspoon

I think it’s when you can identify that arguments do not make sense that the underlying bigotry is revealed. It doesn’t make sense on one hand to indicate support for liberal values, and on the other hand support terrorist movements. The argument doesn’t make sense because they are really drawing on some hidden ideology, and it could be that the true motivation is an underlying antisemitism.

reginaldronnierara · 02/10/2025 13:59

@defrazzled what do you mean? Can you explain?

But people seemingly don’t have the right to protest with English flags against what’s happening to this country because they are racist thugs, right??

Yep, that's right.

CozzieG · 02/10/2025 14:00

Chenecinquantecinq · 02/10/2025 12:08

This is what happens when anti semitism is normalised which it has been by the Left with authorities turning a blind eye.

This is not a helpful comment. The country needs to come together (isn't that what the flag flying is all about?).
Throwing in daft comments about "the left" isn't helpful and is also not true.
Disagreeing with the Israel government is not antisemitism and is also no excuse for attacks like this. Violence has no excuses.

defrazzled · 02/10/2025 14:00

@reginaldronnierara you hate innocent bystanders almost a much as an antisemitic terrorist? Really? You can't see how crass that is?

ImperfectAlf · 02/10/2025 14:00

ilod · 02/10/2025 12:30

antisemitism has been allowed by our very own prime minster, those awful marches in London where the “free palestine” “queers for palestine” crowd don’t even bother to disguise their hate of Jews. There will be more attacks in future because, as David Baddiel said, Jews don’t count.

Couldn’t agree more.
the man is a disgrace
