Civil unrest, what's really going on?

1000 replies

Sadworld23 · 03/08/2025 17:02

My DH keeps chirping up with, there's riots here, protests there, immigrants have done assaults in xxx etc. He sees me as a bit of a do-gooder..

All UK places, but when I look at my regular news, there's very little reporting of it.

My DH has some MH issues currently and to confront him with 'what the heck are you reading?' isn't worth it right now.
I make comments such as, ooh that sounds grim and doesn't sound good, and that's very worrying, but I'd really like to know if it's really happening and where he's getting this info.

Latest YouGov polling

I don’t think that changes anything. Ultimately we can’t know how many illegal immigrants are in the country, because de facto they are illegal and evade the authorities to enter.

I suspect it is much lower than legal migrants. But the legal migrants (from Hong Kong, Ukraine, and other countries) are nowhere near the terrorism threat and sex crime concern that swathes of men from Albania, Afghanistan etc are.

It’s highly disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

You never see marches against Ukrainians, people from Hong Kong, Sikhs or Hindus. Perhaps it’s because the public arent actually xenophobic per se (although some always will be) but concerned about a valid issue?

@Notsosure1

I think not having the infrastructure to support would be the argument in ANY country, and even though we think our services are rock bottom - we are still average/better than average on the global stage.

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 06:24

@Nestingbirds

Can we be the only European country that puts that policy in place?
How will we then be viewed globally? How will other countries respond if we do that? Is it fair that we accept approx the same number as other European countries?

Edited

I could not care less what any other countries thinks globally! This is a major crisis here and needs to be addressed. You might even find it gains the respect of other nations. Perhaps others will follow suit? Because we can NOT carry on as we are. We are at breaking point.

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 08:56

@Nestingbirds

Ok well a ‘couldn’t care less’ about other countries attitude has led to war/displacement - the whole cause of this problem.

Namechangeragin · 05/08/2025 08:57

Globally we are a laughing stock. I speak to a variety of nationalities each month- they think the way we have allowed the rape of our minors (plus covered it up!) is disgusting. Who allows their girls to be raped and then covers it up?

I used to listen to R4 news every day. Now I play a mixture of Talk Radio, GB News and classical radio. The interview yesterday at approx 9:30am on Talk is worth a listen.

@Nestingbirds

Which countries would you say ‘no’ to? Would you say ‘yes’ to some countries and not others?

It would apply to all countries. Essential staff and students would be the exception.

It is not a permanent stop to all immigration, but one that allows for the back log to be cleared. Deportations to take place and a proper stringent structure to be put in place that is very strict going forward. I’d introduce tighter measures across the country so people can not live here illegally.

Anyone travelling here illegally is placed in prison, and deported. It becomes illegal in this country as of yesterday. Smugglers get life in prison.

We have to sharpen up, wake up and start to take this very seriously if wish to continue to live in a tolerant, safe and free country. We have too much to lose.

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 08:59

And perhaps Spain etc are right when UK temporarily visit their country, throw up on their streets, rape, smuggle drugs, commit crime that they have to sort.

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 09:00

@Nestingbirds

Then we should expect the same back.

BIossomtoes · 05/08/2025 09:01

But they’re all living in luxury hotels and claiming squillions in benefits - are they not being counted then?

No, not all. Some are. Some are working cash in hand on the black market and not paying tax while using our infrastructure etc.

All a big issue.

So you acknowledge cultural behaviour can be an issue? And everyone isn’t exactly the same?

Ok well a ‘couldn’t care less’ about other countries attitude has led to war/displacement - the whole cause of this problem.

Why would it matter what other nations think? It won’t lead to war, it will lead to respect. It will lead to the people of THIS country feeling like they are safe, that they matter - and they expect an immigration service that serves our country - not the whole world!!

We are in dire need of some bold and courageous leadership now. Our very way of life is being undermined. It is creating serious tensions in our cities. It can be done fairly, firmly.

You might want open borders, and everyone and anyone can pitch up here for free housing and a life on benefits, but you are becoming a very very small incredibly naive minority now. The rest of the country increasingly disagrees with you.

This measure is going to prevent civil unrest, it is going to prevent racial tensions, it is going to prevent the need for a far right movement. It safe guards everyone.

I am completely fine with that.

Nestingbirds · 05/08/2025 09:09

If Starmer truly wanted to save himself and his leadership, the Labour Party and this country descending into civil war on this watch - he would announce a temporary pause on all immigration.

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 09:13

@JamesMacGill

Yes - I agree that poor behaviour exists in all cultures. I agree that a single male with misogynistic attitudes towards women is a threat.

If that happened, how would universities, NHS and social care survive?

Are you struggling with comprehension? I said short visas will still be given to essential staff and students.

Nestingbirds · 05/08/2025 09:20

But that’s it. No one else. It would be a closed door for a period of time.

FractionalKrispie · 05/08/2025 09:21

One of the sickest crimes I’ve read about was a white male emigrating to the Philippines - and abusing children there. It’s not just one culture who commit appalling crimes.

Prison spare capacity in 2023 and 24 dropped to just 100 place, a COBRA meeting called by the Tories on what to do if the prison/justice system broke down during the General Election....

Now we know why they called the election when they did.....

Deport to where? Many countries will not accept returns or its not safe to fly there & should we return to say Afghanistan or Iran and then find the migrant was thrown off a building?

All these so called easy answers, are nothing of the sort.

The same as Rotherham in fact. I agree. Let’s hope he was punished severely. It’s not about race. It’s about the abuse of children, the abuse of the system. The systematic abuse of goodwill of an entire nation(s).

Nigel Farage said yesterday when asked what he would do about all the illegal Afghanis in the UK and he repliied he would immediately deport them back to Afghanistan. End of.

I wonder if Farage is aware that other countries have been forcibly deporting Afghans back to Afghanistan (from Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan) and that's already causing a lot of problems. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is calling for an immediate halt to this practice.

Plus if we remove all people from other countries from our schools/health service it would collapse. Plus you won’t be getting your take aways/amazon deliveries.

European wide shortage of Healthcare staff, why would a migrant come here, when they can go to other countries, with far less restrictive & cheaper visas?

My neighbour is house bound, relies on carers from Africa and India, lovely people, after a few months, they go elsewhere, in the case of the Indian ones, went back to India, pay is terrible and v long hours.

I would fund Uni's to a level where they do not require international students to survive.

Ah, so it’s mostly Pakistan and Iran deporting them. I wonder if they will now be called racist and Islamophobic as well?
