https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/feb/08/its-horrible-hooters-plots-british-breastaurant-expansion-via-newcastle

Hoping the link works and just wondering what people’s views are on this? I’ve never been in one but from what I understand it’s a restaurant where the waitresses are all attractive young women?

Can’t say I’d be wild about the idea of DH going to one but honestly I’m a bit meh about it. Hardly a strip club.

I think it’s depressing that we still live in an age where young girls are celebrated merely for having a pretty face and big tits. Hooters markets itself on these girls. When ours opened locally my dd was still in sixth form at school, and lots of her friends got jobs there. I thought we were more enlightened now?

I think you know exactly what it is. Don't be disingenuous.

My discomfort is the positioning as a family friendly sports bar.
It celebrates and normalises objectifying girls and women.

I think I’ve read that the management are protective and defensive of their girls, yet they are encouraging entry level voyeur and lechery as perfectly acceptable.

myplace · 21/02/2025 13:27

It’s just regressive.

BeatrizBoniface · 21/02/2025 13:28

You've attached a link but have no idea what it is?
I'm genuinely curious as to why that would be, which isn't "twatty" (sic). However. Not everyone reads what they attach, obviously.
So it is a restaurant, exactly as you say, featuring young women selected for specific appearance.
As it tells you in your attached article.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 21/02/2025 13:32

Damn - I thought it was an owl sanctuary.

I agree with Kruti Walsh's point in the article, it was well said.
I'll no doubt get slated on here for that, maybe called the T word, but there is a proven link.
ducks down under parapet

Adamante · 21/02/2025 13:35

You’re not wrong, and the women are all perfectly decently dressed, they wear American tan “tights” with the thickness of leggings. They literally only have bare arms, if they want to, they can wear T-shirts and long sleeves. Because of where I used to work I knew a lot of the young women who worked at the Nottingham branch. There were many of them using their wages and often very generous tips to put themselves through uni or support a child/children/family, and even if they weren’t, so what? Let young women do what they want, it’s all pretty harmless tbh. If you don’t like the theming, don’t go 🤷🏼‍♀️

100 percent for owl supporting restaurants. Particularly if staff dressed as owls.

This, yeah it's a self selecting crowd. Wouldn't be seen dead in one myself

It's great for middle aged dads! You can legit lech at your daughters friends, in a family friendly environment

User32459 · 21/02/2025 13:39

At least they aren't selling their bodies online via Only Fans.

Many women will always show off their bodies (unless they're oppressed like in some cultures). A lot of female pop stars are gyrating around half naked ffs.

I was thinking it would be nice to eat somewhere with owls hooting in the rafters, but staff dressed as owls would be nice too. 🦉

(I guess you'd have to watch out for dropped pellets though.)

oinkoinksquelch · 21/02/2025 13:41

I think it's one of those "it's ok as long as it's other people's daughters" but I wouldn't feel that way if it was mine.

It is not harmless to encourage the objectification of young, naive women. No natter how savvy you are, it takes many years to appreciate the full implications and extent of the hatred and dehumanising views men hold towards women.

How can it be harmless to open a family restaurant that is centred on the breasts of very young women.

...and that's before you consider The abomination of American tan tights.

bombastix · 21/02/2025 13:46

@BeatrizBoniface - it always mystifies me that they need an excuse. If you looked at an average middle aged man's phone you would see worse.

I mean the UK equivalent might be Norks, Bristols or Funbags.

It's just for creeps. And any woman stupid enough to go with them

Too true. It always reeks of desperation to me.

I knew what what the link contained, I read the article and said very clearly in my OP my understanding was it’s a restaurant which exclusively hires attractive young women, as confirmed by @Adamante.

But apparently that was disingenuous of me. 🤔

Also didn’t know twatty was offensive but on mumsnet apparently it is. Don’t think we need to be policed like children personally but apparently there are sensitive little ears on here that need protecting.

I don’t see how this is any different to Taylor Swift or Sabrina Carpenter wearing skimpy clothing on stage. And also agree with @bombastix about it being a self selecting crowd. Not something I can get excited about.

bombastix · 21/02/2025 14:08

@ThisBlueDeer - just to be clear I think the crowd that go are creeps and I would object if it was on my doorstep.

Middle aged dads can get on with OnlyFans and porn.

JimHalpertsWife · 21/02/2025 14:10

Well, hopefully newcastle locals will vote with their feet. It's stag and hen central so there might be something there.

I'd recommend "Wine Country" to anyone who (like me) is in their 40s+ and was a fan of Bridesmaids - it's like the next decade or two on, a bunch of friends who met at Hooters head off to wine Country for one lf their 50ths.

They do it because there are men who pay for it. If there was no demand, there'd be no £ to be made.

Billyandharry · 21/02/2025 14:12

Awful.
Depressing.
Sexist crap.
Is it still the 1970s?
Where is the male equivalent? There isn't one obvs.
