Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

Just watch Threads
Threads - BBC iPlayer

this tells you everything you need to know, I watched it at the time as did most people, I think it paid a large part in the fuck it way we partied back then, as the world was going to end anyway so you may as well have fun.

Threads; the closest you ever want to be to nuclear war - Silver Magazine
This review of it is good, it is not easy viewing so read this first

Threads

Grim drama telling the story of a nuclear strike on Britain through the eyes of two families, tracing the events leading up to the war and the decade of devastation that follows.

Watch 'When the Wind Blows' on YouTube. That pretty much covers everything. Or, you know, chill.

This is the best advice. I'm sure it was partly written in response to some of the crap advice the government were giving out at the time.

Honestly you wouldn't want to survive it.

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2024 11:27

I hope it's gender appropriate.

Yup. All the pronouns have been checked.

AInightingale · 20/11/2024 11:34

For God's sake don't watch Threads. Why would you want to do that to yourself?

pandora206 · 20/11/2024 11:34

Maybe rerelease of the government's 1970s Protect and Survive film is in order?

I'm old enough to remember this and the panic it created.

ObliviousCoalmine · 20/11/2024 11:34

If Russia start launching nuclear bombs then I very much hope I am dead immediately, I've no desire to survive that apocalypse.

Well yes, but it is very good. Not very reassuring

Dachshund40 · 20/11/2024 11:37

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast i think if the government issued advice it could start mass panic and shortages of supplies tbh, when the risk is actually very low. The government issued advice for disasters this year online, which I guess could be used for this situation. However as for government planning, the plans made are not just made by our government, but with the MOD and nato members, just because you’re not aware of plans and strategies it does not mean they are not in place. Ever since the start of the Cold War this is something that each government will have had plans in place for. Can I ask why you are so preoccupied with this issue?

DogInATent · 20/11/2024 11:38

I think I shall put the ham radios back in the Faraday bag.

That'll be the extent of my preparations.
Given the over-shops I'm about to start doing in the run-up to xmas there should be plenty of food until our skin melts.

After watching the movie threads I would be running towards the nukes. But seriously if it happens it happens, not much we can do about it so try and live your life without watching the news and media outlets as they are the biggest manipulative people there is to instill fear into the masses.

BigFatLiar · 20/11/2024 10:55

The whole point of having nuclear weapons is that we DONT have to use them. Just the threat is enough of a deterrent

Until you come up against someone like Putin who doesn't care. It'll be interesting to see if there are any changes post the American inauguration.

Putin does care though. He cares about not being killed. None of these war mongering power hungry leaders want to die. They want to rule.

If he attacks the UK or US, he'll be dead and he knows it. The retaliation will be full on.

Plus their nuclear weapons are shit and wouldn't reach us anyway. So it really is nothing I can be bothered getting worried about,

RobinEllacotStrike · 20/11/2024 11:40

I'll change the batteries in my head torch.

Will the pamphlet unfold into a nuclear sheild perhaps?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/11/2024 11:40

Thats an interesting statement. I am as interested in this topic as any other current news story. You are going to have to prove a ‘preoccupation with it’ though as from memory I’ve started one thread and put a couple of posts up on another. You’ll have to go through all my posts and link to them.

It's a great piece of television but not the thing to be viewing at the moment! I watched a lot of programmes in the summer of 1985, inc Threads, which were being shown to mark the anniversary of the nuclear attacks on Japan. I was a teenager and the Cold War was still very much a reality, and I scared myself witless. Kids must be terrified right now.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/11/2024 11:42

Official pamphlets are scary (and of zero use if anything of this ilk occurs!)

Oh I don't know, @damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan - should there be anyone left alive and the toilet rolls run out there's at least one obvious use Wink

Attack Warning Red is a great if somewhat morbid read, all about the UK’s plans for nuclear war in the Cold War. The basic message is that everyone knew it was all going through the motions and such an attack wouldn’t be survivable. Any “guidance” along the lines of duck and cover or build a shelter was pure propaganda to make people feel they had some control.

It’s reminding me of the early days of Covid where we did absolutely nothing until other countries started locking down and the suddenly Boris was on the TV spluttering. I’m kind of hopeful conversations are being had somewhere in a preparatory manner instead of a reactionary one.

This isn’t COVID with a known threat coming imminently, it’s still unlikely Russia will nuke us.

Everyone’s updating their guidance, just like the UK did earlier this year, and conversations will be happening behind closed doors. Planning for a potential escalation of war is generally quite sensitive which may be why they’re not sharing the details with Mumsnet just yet.

Undermining faith in the govt is also warfare 101 so maybe we need to think critically whilst also getting prepared.

MaggieHM · 20/11/2024 11:44

I'm of the what will be will be brigade. I'm still hoping that some common sense will prevail because although Putin might be nuts but not stupid he does know from history and experiments what is likely to happen. It would probably be the end of the world as each country retaliates to each perceived enemy. Anyway I thought DT was best friends with Mr Putin so wouldn't he be on his side not NATOs. Wasn't there some talk of USA resigning from NATO.

NettleTea · 20/11/2024 11:45

well they showed Threads a few weeks back. perhaps you could watch that for some inspiration

Is it good? It's on my Wishlist.

Some of the authorisations and actions mentioned at the Kelvedon Hatch museum are chilling. Cold and calculated. Someone mentioned the dogs and cats at the start of the second world war. The considered civil contingencies in the event of a nuclear war go way, way beyond this.

chaosmaker · 20/11/2024 11:46

Rather death than be a character in 'When the Wind Blows'. obviously

Begsthequestion · 20/11/2024 11:51

Why do people assume that it's going to be nukes? Quite ignorant really.

Russia seems to be behind two sabotaged fibre optic cables this week, running between Finland and Sweden and Central Europe.

That kind of attack could cut off a country's internet until they are repaired (5-15 days).

So the advice issued could address the need to manage for some days/weeks without any digital payment systems, food deliveries, access to medical records etc.

Basically, have some food and cash at home in case.

There won't be an attack from Russia. What is being presented to Russian domestic audiences and the reality in the rest of the world is vastly different. Even countries such as Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania aren't at risk. Russia will not attack a NATO country, it is unthinkable. Putin is already on shaky ground domestically, and a NATO attack would ensure his, and his family's, end.

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/11/2024 10:41

A pamphlet to tell us what? If nukes are on the way, you, me and everyone else are dead.

Should be covered in a sentence on the pamphlet.

That's how it's done
