Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

Ok, here’s your guidance (cough): Get in two tins of beans and enough water to last for three days. Pet food if you have any four legged friends. A torch and extra batteries. Blankets. Medication sorted.

Tina159 · 20/11/2024 11:20

Finland share a border with Russia! Rather different than us. But if Russia was going to invade Finland they'd have done it before they had chance to join NATO.

Lets not waste more tax payers money on pointless pamphlets.

Dachshund40 · 20/11/2024 11:21

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast the only reason other countries would do it was for a sense of security for citizens, but really any advice would be pointless.
the only thing I would suggest if it’s something that is actually concerning you is to see how close to nuclear targets you live, there’s information online you can find and see how close to the blast zone you are, or what area of the fall out zone you live and decide whether you want to drive towards it or away from it.

damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan · 20/11/2024 11:21

There's an official UK film series from the 70's on what we should do. It's called 'Protect and Survive' and they are all available on youtube. The fellow narrating has a lovely, reassuring voice. 😁
I'm glad we are not being prepared. Official pamphlets are scary (and of zero use if anything of this ilk occurs!)

You think I’m unreasonable to expect some guidance from our democratically elected government? Isn’t that literally their job?!

Can you imagine the reaction if they did issue such a pamphlet? The right wing press would have an absolute field day. Plus the more bovine members of the public would be out scrapping over toilet roll.

Viviennemary · 20/11/2024 11:22

Nothing. If nuclear weapons are used we're all doomed. To quote a phrase. Which is why they probably won't be,

No pamphlets, but I hear they are doing an emergency reprint of Raymond Briggs’ When the Wind Blows ,one for every household. Same information as the original “paint your windows with white emulsion to deflect the blast” pamphlet, but a more realistic ending……

It’s reminding me of the early days of Covid where we did absolutely nothing until other countries started locking down and the suddenly Boris was on the TV spluttering. I’m kind of hopeful conversations are being had somewhere in a preparatory manner instead of a reactionary one.

I’m in camp burying my head in the sand…
moves on to read the post about Nits on AIBU

DemonicCaveMaggot · 20/11/2024 11:25

Read 'We of Hiroshima' that will give you a good idea of what life is like in the days and weeks after a nuclear strike so you can decide what you need to do to prepare for it.

The government could give us some idea of how to prepare for a war, but it isn't going to be popular. Hundreds of thousands of pets had to be euthanized at the start of World War II as there wouldn't be enough meat for them and the human population.

Harrumphhhh · 20/11/2024 11:25

I’ve checked the toilet roll supply and told my kids that if the bomb is coming, we’re heading towards it. They thought I was joking, but I really would. I’m a single parent with zero survival skills. A quick end would be the best for all of us.

What sort of attack?

There's not much the public can do about targeting of individual political figures with poison umbrellas or nerve toxins on door handles.

There's not much the public can do about subsea cables being cut.

We don't have a land border with Russia or a Russian ally so invasion is highly unlikely.

In the highly unlikely event that Putin pushes the button there's not a lot the public can do. And if you've ever visited one of the UK Cold War sites such as Kelvedon Hatch you'll understand that there's not a lot anyone can do if that happens - public or government.

We could get a lot more upset about Russian interference with UK politics. But the Venn diagram of those pissed off at Labour over inheritance tax for farmers and those upset about Russian support and manipulation in favour of Brexit, Farage, Reform et al and Boris' overly familiar relationships with Russian oligarchs and intelligence officers doesn't have much overlap.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/11/2024 11:26

I just wonder what Keir and crew are getting together for us ... a Powerpoint to duck and take cover at least?

"Sit under a table, put a bag over your head and kiss your arse goodbye"? Grin

Not something I worry about personally, but then living near a nuclear plant I'd be first in the firing line and given the alternative that suits me just fine

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/11/2024 10:48

Who told us that and where did they say it? I guess they could send us a text. That was trialled over Covid from memory.

Edited

No, that was a letter from Boris 😆

Complete with pamphlet.

We are more likely to be sent into riot mode by Russian disinformation on social media, or lose power, water, NHS treatments, and sewage treatment due to cyber attacks. Anything to destabilize the country and put us at odds with each other.

turbonerd · 20/11/2024 11:28

Here’s your leaflet from Scandinavia:
If you live in a brick house and is some (x miles) distance from a nuclear explosion you will most likely survive the radiation but must stay indoors 7 days:
you’ll need minimum 40 liters of bottled water per person, tinned food that can be eaten without heating up,
candles for warmth, lighters or matches, warm woolly blankets and clothes, iodine tablets, toilet paper and
pray your toilet will continue to flush!

Your electricity will be out, no internet, and with bad luck the water supply will be wrecked, so keep some buckets at the ready.

We had a very serious pamphlet in the post. Thick and very detailed! We had most of it in already, but have gone through the dates on our tins now.
It’s not just in case of war; it is also to do with natural disasters that are more frequent now.

foxandbee · 20/11/2024 11:28

Exactly @DogInATent .

It is v v v unlikely Putin will nuke us. But right now, this minute, there are Russian bot farms operating on all social media platforms, spreading misinformation and encouraging division.

I’ve never heard of that info re. pets abd I’ve listened to a hell of a lot of history podcasts! 😔

Seems that NATO is mustering troops in Germany, that includes our soldiers presumably. Even if no nuclear weapons are deployed, it looks as if our military will be drawn into a land war within the next year. It all looks like a massive gamble along the lines of 'not even Putin is mad enough to launch a nuclear strike.' As calling bluffs go it's a fucking big one.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 20/11/2024 11:32

A Principal in the LA Unified School District was supposed to run an emergency response drill for the school. Unfortunately she turned to the wrong page and chose 'Emergency Response in the event of nuclear war'. It turned out this meant locking the children in the classrooms and using the litter bins as toilets.

It did not go down well with parents and made the local news.

I am sure if you write to LAUSD they could give you a copy. At least we all know that we should stay in a locked room with a litter bin if a nuclear bomb lands nearby.

Singleandproud · 20/11/2024 11:32

I'd be heading for the nearest, intact castle they were strategically built there for a reason and nice thick walls to keep the looters et al out perfect for seeing out the zombie apocalypse and any minor fall out I'd imagine, and if not you can go out in style.
