Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

Which bomb shelters have the best Black Friday discount?

Is this post tongue in cheek or do you actually want a pamphlet!!

I don’t know if I want a pamphlet or not. I’m going to guess if there was a pamphlet it would cause a toilet roll shortage and I’d rather not be wiping my arse with newspaper again.

You’re assuming Starmer gives a shit?

Right now he should be doing everything he can to secure food production on this island and he’s fucking it up. I think even BJ was better than Starmer!

Exactly. That info could be useful

Apparently Finland and Sweden are giving out pamphlets. Germany has published a document where they are going to act as a ‘logistics hub’ for NATO troops. Russia is mass producing mobile bunkers for their citizens. I just wonder what Keir and crew are getting together for us.
A Powerpoint to duck and take cover at least? I had to change the autocorrect from’dick’ and take cover 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Cover and take dick might be a more pleasant way to go

in all seriousness things have clearly ramped up a level (or ten). Everyone should be taking sensible precautions against things like Targetted attacks on systems and infrastructure. If cyber attacks are launched on power grids/banking etc then having things you need to keep you and your family comfortable and fed in the short term is very important.

nuclear attacks with the weapons Russia currently possesses would actually be very targeted in their approach and so whilst they would be devastating in the immediate area, outside of that they would cause havoc but not death

Oh yes he certainly doesn’t care about farming. We’ve figured that out. So we need to make sure import routes are unaffected.

Because Russia aren't going to attack us. Russia have been at war with tiny little Ukraine for 1000 days and not been able to best them. If NATO get involved they're fucked. They can't fight us and Ukraine and America, France and the rest of NATO. They know that. They take out one of us, the rest retaliate. Putin is nuts, not stupid.

👏👏👏

cheezncrackers · 20/11/2024 10:52

If Putin attacked the UK, Russia would be blown to smithereens within seconds, because the combined fire power of NATO members is significantly greater than Russia on its own. Even Putin isn't that fucking stupid. But he likes to threaten and have everyone scared and worried, it's the kind of thing psychopaths like him get off on. But if it makes you feel any better, buy some iodine tablets.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/11/2024 10:54

Russia appear to me to be very fucking petty. I don’t think they are that interested in killing everyone directly but they’d very much like to cause as much strife and discomfort as possible. So agree about irregular warfare.

Theres a clip which went viral last year where they announced on some Russian TV show the targets within the UK- 3 bombs would cripple the country beyond comprehension- London, Birmingham and Manchester plus some attacks on military installations.

I happen to live directly in the bullseye of one of those targets. I don’t fancy living surviving in a post apocalyptic world. Life’s hard enough now without radioactive mutants and no means of communication, devastated transportation and infrastructure, food, water or medical help.

BigFatLiar · 20/11/2024 10:55

The whole point of having nuclear weapons is that we DONT have to use them. Just the threat is enough of a deterrent

Until you come up against someone like Putin who doesn't care. It'll be interesting to see if there are any changes post the American inauguration.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 20/11/2024 10:56

Found out lately my neighbour has a bunker under her home. Absolutely buzzing. Been sending apple pies round and that, I better get a fucking invite over there when this kicks off or I want my pie back

I'm near GCHQ anyway so hopefully it'll land right on my head Grin

Us too!!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 20/11/2024 10:58

DH suggests we take iodine tablets and drive in the opposite direction to Helensborough. By B roads, apparently (They will be clear because no-one else will have thought of doing this)

He doesn't have a firm idea of where we should stay and what we should eat.

I told him it was possible to go a way for a bit- I have some leave coming up at work.

DH laughed at that. What use is having leave when we're all going to die anyway? I told him the leave was important for when we don't get nuked after all and we have to come home and explain where we've been all this time.

I'll leave you to imagine what he was like to live with over Covid.

Zinglenibber · 20/11/2024 10:58

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/11/2024 10:48

Who told us that and where did they say it? I guess they could send us a text. That was trialled over Covid from memory.

It was in May this year, widely reported on news websites. Not framed as war specific, more as preparing for general emergencies. This is the first article in my search that isn't behind a paywall: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/supermarkets-prepare-website-oliver-dowden-emergency-kits-b1159498.html

Warning against panic buying as Britons told to have three days of supplies stashed

I would enjoy the mortgage holiday...

VesperLind · 20/11/2024 11:00

We are near Menwith Hill so we will be vaporised in seconds. The pamphlet won’t survive either.

rrrrrreatt · 20/11/2024 11:00

There’s a government campaign, it’s the one a PP referenced: https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/ It was announced earlier this year and picked up by some media.

I don’t mind a digital leaflet like Finland but sending a paper one to every household would just be a waste of taxpayers money - direct mail is expensive and most of it just gets put in the bin anyway.

I recently saw a freedom of information request to my local council asking about advice if there's a nuclear event and they got directed to the info about what happens if a vaguely local nuclear reactor has issues. So I'm guessing no.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/11/2024 10:47

Well even if it was run towards the missiles I’d take it.

Sorry but why would you need guidance to make that choice? I’m all for government advice but when it’s as serious as nuclear fallout, surely it’s down to you, do you want to survive and possible suffer the horrendous aftermath and untold health issues or go out quickly with your loved ones. On a serious not though, I believe the use of nuclear weapons, even by Russia is small due to the retaliation, it would be mutually assured destruction for all as our defence mechanisms would be triggered as would other nato members.

AlteredStater · 20/11/2024 11:01

It should tell us to Stock Up on Toilet Paper in no uncertain terms!!

A proper nuclear war? Not going to do you much good having a pamphlet.

Well no because they’ll all be hiding in their mass produced nuclear bunkers. It will be us blinking into the mushroom cloud with no guidance whatsoever.

Are you incapable of making decisions for yourself? Do you really need someone in an office in London to create a pamphlet for you? If you want to panic feel free. If you want to stockpile baked beans, feel free. If you want to watch the news 24 hours a day then crack on. None of it matters and none of it will make the slightest difference to whether you die in a nuclear blast or not.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/11/2024 11:10

I lived through all the nuclear scares in the early 80s, it was a genuine risk then and I had endless nightmares about it as a young girl. The government advice was shit as there's literally nothing you can do if someone presses that button. Unless you have a nuclear bunker under your house and you are within three minutes of it. Should you manage to get in your bunker, do you really want to live in a post nuclear world? I sure as hell don't. So, I'm not going to worry about it and I say that as someone who is a natural born worrier.
