Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast there’s only so long people can survive in a bunker. Honestly not very government member and civil servant would have access to these either. Our defence mechanisms, nuclear arsenal and nato membership are in place to prevent the need to use nuclear weapons. As much as putin is unstable, I don’t think he’d risk Russia being destroyed by the retaliation it would face if it did use nuclear weapons on another country.

Are you incapable of making decisions for yourself? Do you really need someone in an office in London to create a pamphlet for you? If you want to panic feel free. If you want to stockpile baked beans, feel free. If you want to watch the news 24 hours a day then crack on. None of it matters and none of it will make the slightest difference to whether you die in a nuclear blast or not.

You think I’m unreasonable to expect some guidance from our democratically elected government? Isn’t that literally their job?!

A pamphlet, can't you think for yourself

Frowningprovidence · 20/11/2024 11:11

Chowtime · 20/11/2024 10:47

What guidance do you need?????

Surely you wouldn't even want to survive a nuclear attack????

I had a fun day out at a nuclear bunker. What I learned us you don't get much choice. So its not a given they just nuke the entire country or you get killed in the blast. They might just decide to drop a small bomb on a low population area , or drop one in the north sea as a warming shot. So you need to know that not going out for a few days is important, having a few days of food, iodine whatever, wind up radio etc.

At that point the deterrent hasn't worked so either the powers rapidly de escalate the threat by giving up land etc, or rapidly escalate it and we all die.

I'm more worried about Starmer cosying up to China and blabbing his mouth off. Think I'd sooner be vaporised than have all our communications hacked by Xi Jinping and Lord knows what posted first class from some lab to control us all, slowly and painfully.

Jaysus Mumsnet is cheerful these days

You know you can't buy iodine at an effective dose for nuclear fallout at Holland and Barrett, right?

To be fair Mumsnet has never been cheerful.

No, but the level of fear mongering has reached new heights.

You could watch Threads on iPlayer to get some clues.

So if they tell you to draw the curtains and go and sit under the stairs that's what you'll do ? There is no guidance anyone can give you.

And yet other countries have managed it!

Apparently Finland and Sweden are giving out pamphlets. Germany has published a document where they are going to act as a ‘logistics hub’ for NATO troops. Russia is mass producing mobile bunkers for their citizens. I just wonder what Keir and crew are getting together for us.
A Powerpoint to duck and take cover at least? I had to change the autocorrect from’dick’ and take cover 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Any links, OP?

The UK isn't doing anything, because an attack from Russia is not going to happen.

Chill out everyone and start preparing for Christmas.

No, but the level of fear mongering has reached new heights.

Maybe the government should issue a pamphlet on how to spot and deal with fear mongering, it would be most useful.

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2024 11:17

Timeforabiscuit · 20/11/2024 10:43

Depends, do any peers stand to gain a lucrative pamphlet printing contract?

I really don't think that's the type of response the OP was hoping for.

Can we all please start posting increasing hysterical nonsense to give the bottom feeding media something to forth about. People are getting tired of farmers now.

Come on - up your game !

Samphire44 · 20/11/2024 11:17

OP are you proposing to hit it hard and fast with a major leaflet campaign?

You can download the Swedish pamphlet in English. It talks about national service/their total defence policy, air raid sirens, and civil defence shelters. We don't have any of that.

The rest is pretty much common sense.

Dont be such a spoilsport.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/11/2024 11:19

I don't think we would have time to kiss our arses goodbye, let alone open a pamphlet.

But the same applies to Moscow and what is the point ruling a dead population? So I trust Putin will continue to act in his own best interests.

Why don’t we have any of that out of interest? Is that a lag from WW2 or just their proximity to Russia?
