Jess Phillips suggests she received quicker NHS treatment because she voted for Gaza ceasefire.

Wait, what?

The Times broke the Labour pass story, they generally like to promote stories they break, ie their journalists

callmej · 31/08/2024 11:42

Oh, yes. But I think they'd also leap on something like this, it's pretty shocking and would certainly play to their audience - and generate a lot of comments... Especially considering today's paper is pretty light on news, 2 of their 4 anti-Labour articles are re-hashes and one admits its purely speculative in its headline. The other (mouldy flats) was on twitter yesterday at the same time as the Jess Phillips story so wasn't broken by The Times.

There's also a video of Raynor dancing on holiday which I have no intention of clicking on so I don't know if that's anti-Labour or not. I struggle to see how a woman having a boogie on her hols can be worthy of The Times, or of my interest. I do regularly wonder whether I should maintain my subscription...

More complicated then a ceasefire being a good thing? Over 40,000 dead, 2.6 percent of all children in Gaza and a polio outbreak. You must really have to hate Palestinians to believe a ceasefire isn’t a good thing.

I don't know whether Hamas would go for it, but can you find volunteers to take the place of the hostages so their families can get them back. I assume you yourself would be willing to go,

Then we could have the ceasefire and maybe even get you back one day if Hamas felt like it.

Do you know what Zionist actually means?

I do, but in modern parlance it means a supporter of the actions of the Israeli state. Israel’s foreign policy is a disgrace. It has become a murderous state, with grandiose notions of its own importance.

kerstina · 31/08/2024 12:56

I live in Birmingham. I don’t believe most drs are Palestinian! What utter rubbish. It may be true to say most Doctors in Birmingham are Asian . Possibly Muslim.

Still no actual evidence of what was said?

It's all very strange, I can't see any reason she wouldn't loudly and angrily deny it if it weren't true? Though it may be possible she is holidaying off-grid and hasn't seen the accusations 🤷‍♀️

I'm going to be pretty perturbed if it is just totally ignored though...

CurlewKate · 31/08/2024 18:42

@callmej She's so used to people making stuff up about her that she might just decide to ignore it if it's not true.

Who makes up stuff about her? I’ve never heard that. It’s definitely a cause for concern if NHS doctors are discriminating so if it’s not true she should clarify

it doesn’t mean that nor is the Israeli state “murderous” or “grandiose”. Israel has by far the best human rights record in the region (albeit that’s not difficult, sadly) and by far the most diverse and prosperous society.

A Zionist is simply someone who supports the existence of a Jewish state.

It’s also a bit more complicated in that Israel needs to stop Hamas capability to invade its territory and murder, rape and kidnap its people. Also to stop them sending rockets on a daily basis to hit Israeli homes and hospitals.

but yeah, if these people so keen on a one way ceasefire want to take the hostages place, that would definitely be a start. Perhaps we might then see how keen they are to support Hamas when they have to deal with the reality as Israelis do on a daily basis.

This was on GB News yesterday at lunchtime. The "journalist" didn't quote, they paraphrased.Hmm

I think that if this story was real, other outlets would have covered it.

@callmej She's so used to people making stuff up about her that she might just decide to ignore it if it's not true.

This is an extremely serious allegation that's been levelled against her in the mainstream media, it's not just a few oddballs on twitter. I've also not heard that she's had a lot of people make up stuff about her, has that also been of such a serious nature, and also published in the mainstream media? I just can't believe that she would shrug her shoulders and ignore published articles that accuse her of using her position to push past the public to get herself priority NHS access, and of her being entirely comfortable with doctors denying emergency medical care to people who disagree with their political views. I'd be screaming blue murder if someone accused me of those things; for a member of parliament (who's only been in the job for a few weeks) to not even bother to address it is extremely strange.

Other outlets have covered it though, it was in the Telegraph, Spectator, Daily Mail, Huff Post and more... I don't read any of those but I think the first two are supposed to be reasonably accurate, even if (in my opinion) their politics are pretty unpleasant.

It was a public event. There must have been an audience. It would be easy for anyone or Phillips to deny the anecdote was told

@EasternStandard "It was a public event. There must have been an audience. It would be easy for anyone or Phillips to deny the anecdote was told"

Indeed. It would also be easy to have a proper quotation rather than all the "she suggested" stuff.

I copied and pasted a quotation in pp

It was the words not 'she suggested'. That's why I asked which DM article you were reading

I think most educated people know this is a war that Israel have wanted to have for a very long time.

Then why did Hamas hand it to Israel on a plate? If they hadn't have invaded, murdered kidnapped and raped on 7th October, then Israel wouldn't have had their 'war'. Yet here we are....

HRTQueen · 01/09/2024 21:40

She often spoken before thinking through what she is saying but was often excused as she is a passionate MP 🙄

I like her but I hope she did not say something so fucking stupid, what sort of message is this giving people. Unprofessionalism, fear for Jewish patients and fear that once again adding fuel to the anti Muslim feelings

lets hope it’s been wrongly reported

Bluebellsinthewind · 01/09/2024 22:29

Pretty sure she put the Tweet out herself then deleted it, when the press picked up on it. Will have a look.

callmej · 02/09/2024 11:48

It seems to have just vanished, nobody seems to be at all concerned and it doesn't seem they'll be any investigation or condemnation. I'm actually finding it a bit upsetting; how can we have someone near the top of government thinking it's fine to shove the public out of the way to get medical treatment quicker, and that's it's absolutely acceptable for doctors to leave extremely sick people to suffer if they don't like their politics? And as Starmer and the rest of labour haven't even addressed it, I can only assume they're also fine with it. But nobody seems to care. I strongly suspect if Suella Braverman gloated that she'd received quicker treatment because she was an MP, and that the doctor who saw her was a Brexiteer Reform voter who said he let her leapfrog sicker patients because he liked her anti-immigration stance, there would very definitely be some interest!

I am considering writing to my MP to inquire whether we now have a social credit system where our political opinions dictate the level of NHS care we receive. Although I'm pretty central politically, I am both GC and anti-Hamas and I'm nervous that these stances could mean I get pushed to the back of the queue. I have a chronic illness so that could hugely impact my life. I suppose it's better to just tow the line, get off forums and not admit to any 'wrongthink'. Terrifying times.

Agreed.

I am also considering serving the equivalent of a
FOI request to ascertain what actually happened.

This should not be allowed to simply go quiet.
