They went from Tamworth to my home town and the police were all over it. We are very multicultural town and proud of it. Hardly any EDL got off the train and the local muslim population surrounded their mosques in a peaceful defence. No arrests.

Funny how they didnt actually try to start anything in a town where all the locals, all colours, nationalities, sexes, religions, stand together.

I am proud of my town and it my neighbours.

KS so far silent but Jess Philips has posted "Have spoken to police and pub staff at sites of violence tonight, pub has been visited by lots of lovely community sending solidarity and are locking up for the night now as usual."

She also reposted "Spent a few hours this evening in Bordesley Green where a tense but good natured gathering of about 300 people, mostly young men but including elders and a few women, came out to show their opposition to a rumoured far right march. Circling the road island outside McDs…/1"

she earlier posted [about the Sky reporter] "These people came to this location because it has been spread that racists were coming to attack them. This misinformation was spread entirely to create this content. Don't spread it MR Tice!"

When asked "Do you think that gives them a right to assemble on the street all tooled up?"
She responded "Nope and anyone committing criminality should face the law, but it's important that the facts of why people are congregating. And how it is done on purpose in order to keep driving this dissent, to create content. It's very organised and very ugly."

So I'm sure we all feel reassured that Labour will be treating this 'good natured gathering' the same as they are treating the 'far-right thugs'.

She's talking absolute bollocks. If it's the same pub she visited, there was nothing good natured when that lad was set upon by jobs carrying the Palestinian flag. Maybe she can review the footage from the bystanders who witnessed it ,and comment on the situation then.

It will happen, city’s will become migrant only communities and whites everywhere else. It’s slowly happening now ( faster in some places )

Are you a Nigel fan? Oh well. But I agree that migration is going to increase, because climate change is going to make large areas of the world uninhabitable. And it'll probably happen a bit slowly for 10-20 years then happen rather quickly as various tipping points tip.

I did think Tamworth was an odd choice for a “demonstration” - doesn’t really fit the same mould as the other towns/cities in the spotlight this week.

Twitter said Tamworth was chosen due to the rape of a young local woman. The perpetrator allegedly residing at the targeted hotel.

Poverty is definitely a part of this. I think a lot of normal people- not just the far right- have realised that despite being on treadmills like hamsters - working honestly day to day- they are getting nowhere. You can’t buy a house, unaffordable rents, the cost of living crisis, years long NHS waiting lists. The government is not addressing these issues as part of the cause of the riots. Starmer I think has inflamed things by condemning all as far right thugs and not allowing any space for legitimate questions and concerns re immigration policy. Violence is not the answer and is always wrong however I think people feel like there is no alternative. Writing a letter to your MP goes nowhere. Poverty is really grim and really not pretty. The government needs to address why this is happening.

Violence is almost always a last resort, people generally don't put themselves in imminent danger for no reason. The people saying the rioters are out there just 'for fun' ought to be ashamed of themselves. I don't condone the violence but I do understand the desperation and hopelessness behind it..

I don’t even know how to formulate a response to that. It is quite frankly astonishing.

Things aren't that desperate. Unemployment is low. Young men aren't the ones suffering from poverty the most, it's children and women.

If you aren't aware of the desperation many people have faced for a while now you are in a very privileged and sheltered position.

StarCourt · 06/08/2024 01:15

@RogueFemale that's 6% averaged out across the whole UK. Its more than 6% in Bham.

Yes, I do know, but thanks for pointing out the blindingly obvious.

If you want to hear someone sound like a bot listen to Keir Starmer! 😆

I'm aware and I stated that children and women are suffering from poverty. You seem to be saying that young men are suffering equally, in spite of low unemployment? It doesn't add up. The young men rioting aren't rioting on behalf of women and children, that much we can be sure of.

The threats to my town definitely were EDL led. What happened in B'ham may not have been, but I didnt comment on that.

They marched here about 10 years ago, there was a counter protest by mainly white people and oddly enough, they never came back.

HopeMumsnet · 06/08/2024 10:44

Hi all,
It is with some trepidation that we are restoring this thread.

We have removed several posts, and would ask for your help if you feel that we have missed any on a long thread.

We appreciate the robust debate and diverse perspectives shared in this thread and we know that these issues are an important and complex topic for many MNers.

We ask that you show respect for your fellow MNers, even if you strongly disagree with their point of view. Personal attacks, insults, and derogatory comments will not be tolerated.

While, on the whole, we think it’s fine to critique ideas, beliefs, and practices - there is nothing to be gained by stereotyping, generalising or making blanket statements about any religion or its members. In our experience, points made with supporting evidence and with reasoned arguments do far more to ensure the discussion is constructive and useful.

Posts that promote hatred, violence, or discrimination against individuals or groups based on religion, race, or any other identity will be removed, and repeat offenders will be banned. We have zero-tolerance for hate speech on Mumsnet - please report anything like this if you spot it on the boards.

We want to be a place where people with differing opinions can rub along with tolerance and forbearance - quite simply, how else are we going to make the world a better place for our kids if we as adults can't model that behaviour - so to be clear we will take a firm line on posts that we just think could have been worded that in a less inflammatory manner.

Let's give this thread another shot, then. Peace and love, as OliviaMN used to say. x

Case in point above, @EasternStandard. Just report anything that concerns you to us at MNHQ via the Report button, and we can take it from there. No need for you to worry about how other posters are behaving. Unfortunately we have now had to remove your post as well. Peace and love, still.

Nice to see the thread is back ! Not much been reported this morning, it was said that a large crow had gathered to protect mosques shops etc which I think is absolutely fine. It's the group of young lads that separated and beat the man at the pub, intimidating the female journalist slashing tyres etc that I don't agree with and thought was just as bad as the riots up and down the country
