What makes you assume it's EDL? People have had enough of the bias discrimination. The PM has said he is giving police powers to protect the public from "extremists" which is equally funny as I don't remember him doing that 2 weeks ago when Leeds was burning or the other times protesters have unacceptably gone turbo.

Again Manchester airport police officer was accused of being racist and protests broke out. Floyd affect were statues were torn down and police were told not to get involved.

There certainly isn't equality going on. Have 3 BAME girls got stabbed by a white guy the streets would also be burning and rightly so. People are angry at the inequality taking place.

People are quick to jump on the bandwagon about racist police brutality but when the tables turn the other way they are called stupid and thick.

No wonder everyone is losing their heads.

I think you've nailed it there.
There are certain things that only become a problem when white people are involved

As a brown person (born here to parents who came here in the 70s to work for the NHS for 50 years until retirement) living in one of these cities that's been the site of terrifying violence today, I'm really scared. More for my elderly family who attend Friday prayers at a major mosque which I'm scared will be targetted, but also just generally for the future.

I spoke to a (white), really good friend tonight to ask if we should call off our plans in city tomorrow. She said "oh no, it will all have blown over. I was there today and we were just peacefully protesting about what's happened to our country, how the good people who speak out get silenced and jailed and now we've been unfairly portrayed in the media". I've seen the live footage of exactly what was going and at the time and location she was at (with her CHILD I might add) hundreds of people were doing the Nazi salute and policemen and women and animals were violently attacked, stabbed and glassed.

Honestly. I'm heartbroken. If that's a friend what hope do we have?

But the reality is a LOT of people are being brainwashed on social media now. Radicalistion is happening quite clearly and right wing terror is growing, mark my words. The internet has a lot to answer for.

Violence against women growing thanks to how easily available porn is and the Incel movement growing online.

Paedophilia thanks to how easy it is to obtain and share images of child abuse.

Conspiracy theorists that have lost all touch with reality thanks to fake news.

Anti social behaviour thanks to young people sharing bullying, theft, vandalism and so on on TikTok and glamourising it.

Xenophobia and Racism thanks to all the Britain First type posts people share and people like Farage, Robinson and Trump milking every second of it.

Isis used the internet to share images of the horrific terror they inflicted upon their hostages and victims and to scare the lot of us into changing how we lived for many years. That directly fed into the right wing agenda, as did those images that Farage used of Muslims (on a pilgrimage coincidentally) lining up to pour into the UK. Then in 2020 we all got locked up in our houses and had what for company? Facebook. Insta. TikTok. YouTube. All of which use AI to pretty much read our minds and suggest more and more content to us which only divides us more...as we end up in our own little echo chambers, with our own little supporters who share all the same views as us.

It's been reported that Southport suspect apparently spent years as a total recluse barely leaving the house. I'd bet a large sum of money that he spent a lot of that time with unrestricted internet access.

And pretty much every kid over the age of 2 these days is given a screen. So it continues.

You see posts on here all the time, "I miss the 90s. It seemed like a more innocent happy time."

Yes. Because we didn't have these devices with us 24/7 that, at best gave us FOMO or anxiety and at worst radicalised us, were used to brainwash us...or abuse us. More people only had about 5 channels of TV and weren't subjected to 24/7 terrifying news. "Fake News" was rare. You could go out for the day and focus on your own little world without knowing what was going on everywhere throughout the world. You could actually speak to people who for the most part weren't glued to a phone. You got your "community" from the living, breathing humans around you. Not virtual communities. People you could look in the eye, and learn to trust, over time because they earned that trust.

That Ali Al-Akhati coming over on a dinghy bollocks that started all this unrest has been proven to have come from a Russian twitter account. "Grey warfare". And as a result we have riots and violence on our streets without any need for an attack from Russia itself.

I realise the irony of me using social media to make this point, but still...people need to realise the weapon we're all holding in our hands and have the intelligence to realise how much it's harming and dividing us.

Totally agree.

Where has this nonsense about the army being deployed in 2011 come from?

They threatened to bring in the army in 2011, there’s been no mention of it this time. They also made the city centres no go areas. I remember getting off the train about 6pm at Lime Street and it was completely deserted. I’d been working away and had no idea what was going on. I walked outside and there was no traffic and no people (except for hundreds of police officers). I asked what was happening and they said that an order had been passed that day that nobody was allowed into the city centre. Yesterday we’ve had hoards of thugs smashing up shops while the public are just carrying on shopping around them. There seems to be very little concern for public safety.

Where were police officers and animals stabbed??? That’s shocking, I haven’t seen that in any news outlet

I'm very much of the opinion that this is a hangover from the decisions and statements made by the last government, who spent most of the last 14 years demonising immigrants and asylum seekers.

It's rather unfortunate that the current government will get the blame, when they've shown a much more humane and balanced approach.

Demonised them in rhetoric while in practice ushered in unprecedented immigration as government policy. They were profoundly dishonest.

What are you saying? They are using the murders in Stockport by a Briton who was born in Wales and lives not far from Stockport and who is not known to be an Islamic extremist as an excuse for Fascist thuggery, looting, and violence.

You are the second poster to say the murders were in Stockport. It was in SOUTHPORT.

I've just been reading about this on Sky app. It's scary, how is Keir going to get it all under control?

He isn't. Parliament closes down for summer. You might expect him to recall everyone to work under the circumstances but as yet he has done nothing.

Flibflobflibflob · 04/08/2024 09:18

I think it’s a build up, in the news in the last few weeks

Harehills
Murder of children
stabbing of soldier (not much attention to that one)
Police being attacked at manchester airport (oh the irony of that one)
machete gangs in the street
Murder of woman by somalis while being robbed
Another grooming gang sentenced
black bus driver got stabbed (no-one cares much about that)

All those people are black or brown, just a lot of bad news and feeling of things being out of control. It’s summer, there will be people who are genuinely wondering what the fuck is going on but theres always a gard core group of people who are violent, aggressive and racist. Similar to the Pro-Palestinian marches, most will be peaceful but there will be a core who are genuinely racist. I remember the London riots, some of them had never even heard of Duggan yet they saw the potential for violence and went out into the streets to join in.
Now there are muslim groups out on the streets too, fucking fantastic.

The accusations of two tier policing have really taken on some life. I mean there is an element of truth here. At the Harehills riot the police basically let them get on with it. When those two thugs from manchester had politicians falling over themselves to empathise with them and not one mention of the female police officer with broken noses (again the irony of current riots). They should have been arrested and charged immediately (I don’t even think they have been charges yet).

No-one who is a normal person is going to be at these things. I don’t care what colour or religion you are when you go out and commit violent acts or destruction of property you are scum who is trashing a community where everyone else has to live, you need to be in prison.

They are riots not protests. They have absolutely nothing to do with what happened in Southport. Those racist thugs, many of them drunk holding lager as they bait the police, are using the grief of those poor families as an excuse.
Hatred is being whipped up by social media, Tommy Robinson is urging people to riot, Reform UK and their supporters are sharing racist comments and I think unfriendly foreign Governments also have a hand in this.
I hope these people are identified quickly and that they receive long , long sentences.

Swithatlake · 04/08/2024 09:23

AndThatsItReally · 03/08/2024 22:22

It's very easy to simply say "They are thick, racist thugs" - as if that's going to solve anything. It virtue signals - you are NOT a racist thug... - but goes no further.
Why weren't these people rioting five years ago? What about the way the Southport attacks were handled and reported contributed to this? Who is behind it and what do they gain? Follow the money... Winners and losers.....

A lot of people will just elaborate with their own entrenched views but it's not going to be that simple. And I really, really hope that there are people with some brains in power somewhere who can sort this out.

The vast majority are thick thugs though, and usually racist. These riots are nothing new, there have been riots in the UK for as long as I can remember. They're almost always in summer, and always stop when it rains.

The riots in 2011 started as protests against police racism, and many of the rioters were not white (plenty were). There is a massive problem in the UK with thuggery, a disregard for education and a lack of respect in general.

VJBR · 04/08/2024 09:27

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 04/08/2024 09:31

It's laughable that people are trying to claim that the rioters aren't racist/aren't far right.

They were doing Nazi salutes in my city yesterday and chanting far right/racist slogans. We have seen footage across the country of them throwing bricks and bottles at mosques, trying to smash their way into asylum seeker accommodation etc. And spreading dangerous misinformation online in order to whip up support.

Shame on each and every poster on here that is trying to excuse and defend this despicable behaviour. Shame on all who have tried to exploit the tragic murders of three innocent children for your own nefarious purposes. There is no excuse and there is no defence.

You should know that the racists will always be in a minority because most people in this country are better than that. The far right rioters were massively outnumbered in my city yesterday by decent people peacefully standing up to racism. We will not let you win.

Please take your pathetic, hate-filled nonsense and your insidious lies elsewhere. You are not welcome on Mumsnet.

Agreed, all violent thugs and we need to combat the mindset in the UK that you can just take take take from the state while showing no respect for anything or anyone.

This is ridiculous.
He has met with police chiefs. His cabinet has met. The people who have the power to take action have met debating it in the house is not doing to have the slightest effect.
He has called the rioters out for what they are unlike other politicians who have been apologists for them.
He has enabled intelligence sharing between forces and wider use of facial recognition technology. To track the movement of known ringleaders and offenders and so restrict them using criminal behaviour orders. He has set up a task force.
He is acting as quickly as is possible.
As director if public prosecutions he dealt with the riots of 2011 which I remember well so he is in the best position to understand what to do.
Then as DPP he kept the courts open all day and at at weekends to deal with the prosecutions. And enabled magistrates to hand out tougher sentences.
Ultimately though it is the police who have to police not the government.
