4 young children stabbed in Annecy

I looked for a thread on this but couldn't see one.

I'm absolutely shocked and sickened at this attack on these helpless babies.

I can't imagine what the mother/minder of the baby who was stabbed multiple times in their pushchair is feeling and I so hope the two babies who are critical pull through.

Just awful :( :(

Reading these kinds of stories really affect me. I have a 3.5 yr old and a 18month old and I just want to scoop them up and protect them forever.

BBC reporting that one of the little girls is stable. Thank goodness. Thinking of the 3 other little ones

i was there yesterday. I had an appointment at the prefecture which is right next to this park- i nearly decided to move it to today because a road closure was making me late…. For some reason i didn’t. After the prefecture we were in that park for 2 hours, we ate lunch where he was running from gendarmes, my children were playing on the slide from the video… it’s a super safe place, i left my 15 month old in their pram asleep at the side of the park whilst the other two played- all i can think now is if i had decided to go today it would be a totally different story.

Oh gosh @sathletdown dread to think.

It does look like a lovely place

Absolutely shocking. Annecy is a really lovely place. I’ve walked through that park as I’m sure others have on this thread. Unimaginable that such a horrible event could have occurred there today on a summers day.

Terrifying for you.

Thank god for your gut instinct there

It’s impossible to discuss. As you can see from this thread any attempts to do so are met with pretence of not understanding or accusations of racism or sly insinuation. So cowardly.

To be honest, I find it weird that people suddenly treat criminials as though they're only from a certain country/continent/demographic once it's mentioned, as if we're not swimming with our own home grown cimininals.

For example, I often watch a police activity YouTube channel and they show real body cam footage of criminals being shot, police chase, good and bad interactions in the US. What I notice is that everyone talks about the criminal as a criminal, a person. But once it's someone of a non-white demographic, suddenly you get mostly comments like 'yep that's how they do!' 'Of course it's them'. And so on and so forth.

Err...so suddenly only non-white people are featured on this channel then? Only non-white people are criminals? Obviously not but commenters make it so. It becomes about them being non-white than what they've done - a stark contrast to the videos of white criminals.

So I do understand when some people accuse others of racism in this instance because the posts become about where the criminals came from or what they look like as if we don't have hideous criminals of our own.

I do agree that a thread about, for example, deporting any criminal from other countries (because we have enough of our own to deal with, and not because we are so perfect that other country nationals are coming to corrupt our perfect law-abiding citizens) should be welcome and not be met with accusations of racism.

That's good to hear. I think there was one other child who was operated on and is out of surgery but never heard anything about the other two so I hoped they were not as injured.

Him being an asylum seeker has everything to do with this. He was due to be deported back to Syria and now he won’t be. Potential motive.

Interesting. He should be deported though. Why keep him?

One newspaper article said he's a legal refugee in Sweden but I admit I didn't read much about him.

@BethDuttonsTwin Unprovoked knife or indeed any other attacks on citizens going about their daily business in European countries. The patterns. Who is doing it, why they claim to be doing it. Where they’re from etc etc.

Why are we pretending there are no similarities? Why is attempting to discuss them being met with the implication there is an underlying bigotry in the attempts to discuss? I genuinely find it ludicrous that we have to pussy foot round like this.

Well I can remember some right wing neo nazi who killed a whole bunch of kids on an island in Norway or Sweden a few years back. There was that Moat guy to shot known and random people in his village up north. There was someone who stabbed a couple of gay men in a park and some attacks on an emo girl. Nope. Struggling to see what similarities you are alluding to. Other than all the perpetrators were possibly unstable.

You’re not struggling at all 🥱

You're boringly pretending to.

The attack on Gay Men you mention, the one in Reading was it, that’s in this group too…

Thats enough to be going on with I think, though I know there’s more.

It is time to stop pretending and actually discuss and come up with solutions because pretending there’s nothing to see here, no cultural/religious motives isn’t working is it?

Thank goodness. I read on Twitter that there had been two deaths so I am relieved to hear otherwise.

Hi ex says he's Christian. His asylum application identified him as Christian.

AlwaysGinPlease · 08/06/2023 20:12

@Hoppinggreen really?!

You -

Seems pretty clear this man is mentally ill its not an excuse and he deserves to be punished but I see the racists are circling with glee

Also you -

I haven’t accused anyone of racism on this post, if I had I would quite rightly have been deleted I also haven’t called anyone names either

The BBC is reporting that this one is different because there's no Islamist link. So the link between all the others is being mentioned.

SunnyEgg · 08/06/2023 20:13

Where did you mean?

My first thoughts weee with the children, those attacked and families, some seem to be more concerned about the attacker

I’m aware of that and have been since not long after the event. We’d never know this if we don’t examine critically though would we? It’s ok to stipulate his religion and distance him from potential motives via that because he’s Christian but not ok to discuss other faiths and what their motives might be. You’re called racist/Islamophobic when you do that. Can people really not see the tensions here?

BethDuttonsTwin · 08/06/2023 20:17

Anyway, I’m happy to hear the children are doing well. I’ve said all I want to on this. I’m going to go and watch something with my own children and feel grateful for them.

SheSeIIsSeaShells · 08/06/2023 20:22

Horrendous. I watched the video. :(

No comment on the attacker, will wait for more facts.

But this man made me cry. Hero with a backpack. I think he probably saved many lives. I'm crying with admiration for his bravery as I'm writing this up.

I was actually referring to certain sections of the press but it’s very interesting that some posters (including one that had already had their previous thread on this awful event deleted)assumed I was talking about them

He should be deported, but I guess he’d rather do his time in a European prison.

Or if he did the attack to prevent being deported back to a place that might actually be awful - so he’d rather live as a prisoner in Europe than a free man in Syria - then he might be one of the few genuine refugees 🤷‍♀️

I don’t think people knew, but yes it could have been posters on this thread you were referring to - that’s how it read anyway

Careful now, have you got a ‘liosense’ for that pattern recognition, ma’am?

I would say the BBC and other MSM are falling over themselves “with glee” to report him allegedly being a Christian. If he hadn’t been yelling about Jesus we wouldn’t know a thing about him yet, much less his religion and ethnicity.
