4 young children stabbed in Annecy

I looked for a thread on this but couldn't see one.

I'm absolutely shocked and sickened at this attack on these helpless babies.

I can't imagine what the mother/minder of the baby who was stabbed multiple times in their pushchair is feeling and I so hope the two babies who are critical pull through.

Reading these kinds of stories really affect me. I have a 3.5 yr old and a 18month old and I just want to scoop them up and protect them forever.

This is a relief that they're not dead but I just can't help imagine their pain still. The family's as well.

I’m so glad to read that the babies are said to be stable. I hope the adult victim will also recover.

In terms of pattern recognition, I’m sure we’ve all noticed that those who deliberately hurt and kill others are usually male. White, brown, black, young and old. Almost always men. (Although I notice someone has posted upthread about a woman who committed a similar crime in the UK. I don’t believe I ever heard about that but it sounds utterly horrific).

I’m another one admiring the man (a medic, I think?) who very bravely pursued the perpetrator around the park.

This is too horrific for words. Those poor children and their parents. What kind of human being attacks young children, no more than babies.

I’ve just seen his on the news. Absolutely horrific and had to try and explain it to my 5 year old why a man is hurting small children 😔
Oh i feel for you, this is why we now dont watch the news or listen to the radio around our 5 year old, its so sad that they need to know about horrible things like this.

Yes, the part where he stabs the infant in the puschair then go back to stab him twice again has been removed from most videos.

Horrible crimes are committed every day against women and children, by men. We could make a list of crimes committed by refugees, by fathers, by footballers, by ex cons, by men who buy porn….just look at the US and the what seems like weekly attacks on schools, by mainly white men. There is absolutely no indication of anything more than an angry man at this point.

I live nearby, my kids have often gone to this playground. My heart goes out to the kids and carers involved and so thankful for the wonderful annecians who intervened, to the police who arrived in 4 minutes and to the as always amazing pompiers (« firefighters » who are the first responders).

the far right were trying to agitate for a march in Annecy within hours of the attack, desperately trying to leverage hate. Annecy is a beautiful, peaceful town, this is a freak attack and so pleased they captured rather than killed him so he can face the consequences.

@BethDuttonsTwin there are stories on the news every week about some knife crime or other. The VAST MAJORITY are young men stabbing other young men of the same race and the sane social circles. I really think you are demonstrating confirmation bias. You are selecting incidence that support your rhetoric and ignoring all the others that don't. Those events you listed are unusual and that is why they were big news. The daily stabbing of British people by British people is so common place it's almost white noise.

I don t understand why people are watching videos of attempted murder. Why do you feel the need to see this depravity? FYI, It is illegal to share this kind of violent video in France.

My understanding is that there are three Abrahamic religions, rooted in the Old Testament, Christianity adheres to the New Testament so I am not sure what point @SheSeIIsSeaShells is trying to make, and about which religion, if any- with he Old Testament quotes

It can be illegal in the U.K. also to share offensive content on social media but as far as I am aware, it's not illegal to watch it.

I’m fairly politically moderate, but my friend in France is increasingly becoming more right wing. Her local town is full of migrants causing trouble, sexual harassment, rape, they’ve had stabbings.
Girls from the local school have been told not to go out at night. Gay men told the same.
This incident will feed more into the right wing mentality for sure. But there needs to be a nuanced discussion about migration and integration.

Of course he must be mentally ill, no sane person would stab children. No doubt we will get the sob stories of how hard his life has been, if that is the excuse that will be used then every Syrian must be the same.

we can all do lists of horrible attacks on vulnerable people. The common denominator is men.

@GraysPapaya i don’t know where this friend of yours lives but I would be amazed if it is near Annecy. My village votes 50%+ le Pen, the only immigrants are rich anglophones.

White French men, like white British men also harass, rape and stab. Yes, Europeans generally need to have honest discussions about immigration but jumping on every crime by a person of colour as being culturally motivated while ignoring the fact that the same crimes are committed by white brothers, fathers, husbands and sons is not honest. Maybe this guy will turn out to have been part of an isis sleeper cell, more likely he is just another angry, cowardly, violent man.

One of the reasons why immigration is encouraged is precisely because it brings instability and tension. That’s good for the authorities because a fractured and disunited population is less likely to be able to effectively challenge that authority.
