I looked for a thread on this but couldn't see one.

I'm absolutely shocked and sickened at this attack on these helpless babies.

I can't imagine what the mother/minder of the baby who was stabbed multiple times in their pushchair is feeling and I so hope the two babies who are critical pull through.

Just awful :( :(

Reading these kinds of stories really affect me. I have a 3.5 yr old and a 18month old and I just want to scoop them up and protect them forever.

@BarelyLiterate you say the person in question was an asylum seeker. Where are you getting that information please? Sky News are reporting that he was granted asylum in Sweden and is married to a Swedish national.

which is true?

He apparently committed benefit fraud in Sweden so was not granted full residency so went to France to try there, where he was again unsuccessful. Apparently he’s been divorced from his Swedish wife for four months.

I will try to find a link.

BethDuttonsTwin · 08/06/2023 18:40

Ok, all that is in the mail. I’m not going to bother to link to be told virtuously that no one will be clicking on a DM link. You can go and see for yourself if you want to.

BotterMon · 08/06/2023 18:40

Sickening. I hope the injured pull through. Thoughts with their families.

I can't say what I want to about the perpetrator who is apparently in hospital - but maybe somebody will make a mistake with his treatment.....

The children were stabbed by a Syrian asylum seeker who claimed to be a Christian.
If I said what I really thought, I would be banned from MN, so 🤐

Why do you say “claimed “ to be a Christian?

Soubriquet · 08/06/2023 18:41

Just makes you wonder what on earth motivated him to do this?

If he genuinely thought Jesus wanted him to do it, then surely he has mental health problems

I told my husband about it and he asked why I watch the video.
I don't go looking for videos of kids getting hurt but when it's posted on twitter I will watch it. I can see for myself what's happened.

He also said the best thing to do in a knife attack is to try and get away. Do not fight the attacker. Not that these victims had any chance of that.

I've looked at there's no video of him actually stabbing the children, thankfully. Just of him running around with the knife and being chased, then shot.

I think so.

I managed to quickly shut the video down on my phone after it appeared on a social media page. I heard a horrific scream and saw the man charging at a woman. That was enough. I feel ill just having see that. Poor babies. They should have shot him dead.

Seems pretty clear this man is mentally ill
Its not an excuse and he deserves to be punished but I see the racists are circling with glee

LangsNot · 08/06/2023 18:44

I see a white man though with a knife though. Who are the racists here?

I’m more upset about the children and people hurt

It’s awful

There is a video. I saw it earlier today. I was told I was hyperbolic because I said I cried at it. I think it’s being removed now, which is probably for the best for the families involved.

Ah okay I thought as much.

Well I would think it's a given anyone who goes on a rampage with a knife against toddlers is unwell in some way.

Reports coming through are he has a young child and split from his wife in Sweden where he has refugee status.

Clearly a very troubled man.

Just a shame he decided to take that out in incident babies and claim it was Jesus' work. Angry

I don't think it's clear that he's mentally ill. Not everyone who kills or maims other people is however much people like to think that's the case. He may be. He may not be. He may be mentally ill and have no awareness of what he was doing or he could be mentally ill and still know what he was doing. It's not as simple as mentally ill= No culpability. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm with you on the racist remarks though.

Agreed. The fact that he's a Syrian refugee is the least relevant bit of this horrific incident.

Of course it’s relevant. Every thing is in a situation where a man of any nationality, from any place in a position to attack and seriously injure people on the street/in the park/in their church/at their supermarket/in their classroom/at their work.

SunnyEgg · 08/06/2023 18:59

I don’t think that because someone utters a religious phrase means they are mentally ill

The BBC led with refugee in headline, which surprised me

I agree, being mentally ill doesn’t absolve him of this awful crime
My thoughts are with the victims and their families

Clymene · 08/06/2023 19:03

I don't understand what you mean @BethDuttonsTwin

Preps · 08/06/2023 19:03

It's interesting because any genuine asylum seeker will have suffered significant trauma and some of those will have been left with significant MH issues, does that mean we shouldn't help them?

Obviously no amount of trauma/MH problems makes this in anyway understandable, but it's not the action of someone mentally well.
