Just heard this on the radio, does anyone have an actual source? Can't see it anywhere yet, I'm sure that is what I heard, assume not 'serious' as in risk to them?

Exactly. 'Near catastrophic' just means that there could have been a catastrophe, like for example a bystander being hit by one of the scooters going down the sidewalks.

Or maybe people here don't think that's an issue. That poor lady, Helen Holland, lying in a coma after being hit by a royal motorcade, has hardly made a peep in the news. I bet it's pretty catastrophic to her and her family.

Don’t think that’s been proven though, and no arrests were made. I mean anything COULD happen, I COULD have gotten in an accident dropping my son off at nursery this morning, but that’s not news. There’s also been a counter-accusation that the evasive driving was pretty dangerous. The reality of what really happened is probably something very boring lol

tbf I think that’s just his natural resting expression lol

Silver lining that he was pissed off!

This is so cringe, other celebrities don't seem to have these problems, everything Harry and Meghan do is an attention-seeking, embarrassing mess.

I noticed that barely any media were reporting on Meghan's NY appearance before this happened.

As for the 'boo-hoo the palace haven't asked if I'm ok' - words fail

Hell121 · 18/05/2023 08:36

@BeginningToLookALotLike and that is entirely of their own making by releasing that statement - they have caused this story.

I think you are right and I wonder if the charity will be inviting them back in future,

Here is the link for anyone interested: forwomen.org

They seem to have zero awareness of how they come across, it's so strange!

Who is advising them?

So can friends, neighbours, staff.

Better to go to a hotel with a good reputation and take advantage of the extra layer of security and experience than saddle yourself with the extra responsibility of not wanting to infringe on your friends personal property or the paranoia of losing trust in those around you.

They normally stay in a hotel. They don’t normally get papped there

Surely being followed by paparazzi isn't a reason for the UK to provide police protection? Other celebrities who would be followed by paparazzi wouldn't get it.

I didn't say it was. I said that's what they want.

MrsFinkelstein · 18/05/2023 09:00

Whaeanui · 18/05/2023 06:33

One of the security involved has spoken and said they did not fear for their lives but for pedestrians and other people.

I haven’t read all of this but I’m still amazed people think this is hard to believe or irregular. Jennifer Lopez has frequently complained about paparazzi and has said before she thinks they’ll kill her one day. Many many celebrities have said similar things, Jennifer Anniston’s had a minor car accident trying to get through them before. They weave in and around the celebrities cars on mopeds and follow them so closely. Of course it’s terrifying.

Before I went to sleep I saw Backgrid’s statement and again, amazed people are taking the paparazzis word for it. Just amazed.

To paraphrase Mandy Rice Davis - well he would say that, wouldn't he?

He's a member of a supposed elite security detail employed to protect a Prince of the UK who's just been shown to have utterly failed in his role.

He apparently was in the Secret Service and being followed by 6 paps was "the worst thing he's ever dealt with?"

They were in a convoy of 4 blacked out SUVs (presumably with at least 2 protection officers in each - unless they were remote controlled) and their security allowed them to get into a random cab driven by a non pre-screened driver in the busiest city in the world? Incompetence par excellence.

The situation was horribly intrusive and should not be allowed to happen. I'm sure all 3 found the situation highly distressing. The paps behaved appallingly.

My criticism is fully reserved for their security team who behaved shambolicly, unprepared, ill equipped, incompetent and who are now trying to save face. All security should know what to do in these situations - dealing with paps is a bread & butter issue for any celeb.

I understand why they didn't want paps to know where they were staying (but it's where they were filmed staying in the NF show). Phoning ahead and getting the doormen prepared with massive umbrellas to block photos would have been a solution. Not ideal, but at least you'd get home safely. Paps can't trespass on private property like a 5 star hotel. Any 5 star hotel would have allowed them to temporarily wait inside for 1hr, then leave quietly.

No, No one should have to deal with this, but the world is the way the world is right now and paps exist. You employ people to minimise their impact on you. H&M need to employ better people.

polkadotdalmation · 18/05/2023 09:01

The taxi driver played it down. The black mayor on New York played it down. The NYPD played it down. No arrests, no collisions, no injuries, basically no car chase. Nothing on any cameras to show this even happened in the way portrayed. Their statement said 'near catastrophic' and half a dozen blacked out SUVs. Neither of which was the case.

I think a lot of people are now accepting this was a grossly exaggerated episode which may even have been staged. Knowing meghans love of drama and exaggeration (remember the invisible 'pap on a scooter' non event) it's just another bit of self advertising. Do this couple actually know their antics are making them laughing stocks?

polkadotdalmation · 18/05/2023 09:02

Can't help but wonder if it's a publicity stunt to get RAVEC to reconsider their need for taxpayer paid for security?

Damnspot · 18/05/2023 09:03

No they wouldn't 😄

Damnspot · 18/05/2023 09:03

Oh sorry did you mean H and M? I thought you meant the paps!

Whaeanui · 18/05/2023 09:04

I can’t be bothered reading all the fucking bullshit on this but I’m mostly getting that their spokesperson used the wrong word.

That’s it isn’t it? Wrong word. Didn’t deal with the harassment the right way. Never fucking ever the fault of the filthy fucking press is it? Because why? THEY ARE TAKING THE PHOTOS FOR THE PUBLIC

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 18/05/2023 09:04

They weren’t out shopping or playing in the park with their kids. They were at an event the paps are there to take a picture. This is one time they absolutely knew and expected to be photographed and probably followed home.

why did they not have a plan.
why were they surprised that it happened?
I know it happens. It’s sort of the point of inviting famous people to an event to get publicity.

Your obsession with calling her Princess Meghan is quite embarrassing too.

it’s been explained that she does not have this title. She is the Duchess of Sussex. She could be known as Princess Harry, but she has never chosen to use this title. She is not, and never will be Princess Meghan.

What's embarrassing is the fact that you get so worked up over me calling her princess Meghan. She's been called a lot worse how about you go and police that eh?

The black mayor of New York? You mean the mayor of New York. Or did you forget to include the races of the taxi driver and the police spokesperson?

And using Omid Scobie via Twitter to announce to the world (via their "spokesperson", that spokesperson actually being Harry & Meghan) that "Boo hoo no one from the Royal Family has asked if we're ok" is plumbing new depths, even for them.

BadNomad · 18/05/2023 09:08

No hotel will want the paparazzi camping outside their building disturbing their guests coming and going.

Mackerson · 18/05/2023 09:08

The cab driver also said there were at least six paps surrounding them

The cab driver said they 'swarmed' the car. Can 6 photographers be counted as a swarm? Doesn't it mean a large, densely populated group? 6 people that backed away when the security officer got out.

Vanity Fair Reporter Erin Vanderhoof

I'm seeing a little confusion here, so I'll try to clear it up! Paps were following them for two hours to figure out where Meghan and Harry were staying, they were circling Manhattan to avoid taking them back to a friend's house
The economics of the industry are such that regular pictures don't really sell but an exclusive of them in a private setting, like exiting a friend's apartment building in casual clothes, could be worth a BUNCH
They, on the other hand, have legit stalkers (one got arrested at their house just this week!) and have good reasons not to publicize their location. Other people might have just given up after a little while
it sounds legit insane to behave in this way, but any legal risk is outweighed, in the minds of the photographers, by the fact that a good photo of the kids could make enough for four years of private college tuition. or more!

in the uk the press interest in them is HUGE and very, very negative. we once counted the number of stories the daily mail ran on meghan during a month where she made no public appearances. it was more than 100!

You would think Harry would remember the pickle dear old Uncle Andrew got himself into with regards to photos when he chose to stay at his friends NY house rather than a hotel.

They didn’t use the wrong word, they are PR professionals deliberately trying to give an exaggerated version of events to the public to make the point their principals want made

sashagabadon · 18/05/2023 09:09

This type of situation is exactly why the royal rota was put in place. To prevent the unholy scramble for pics. But Harry could only see the negatives of the royal Rota and wanted out of it to choose his own favoured outlets. In the U.K. photographers taking pics of the royals are in a designated area and have a very civilised queuing system where they stack their coloured foot stools in a row ( first there gets best slot) and it seems to works and keep everyone happy so need for chases.
shame harry couldn’t or wouldn’t recognise the benefits of this system when he was benefiting from it!

Freefall212 · 18/05/2023 09:09

Paparazzi swarms and even chases aren't very uncommon at all in the US. I think California ried to bring in some laws to protect celebs a little better. There have been many cases of pop stars (Bieber, Spears, One Direction etc) as well as movie stars being harrassed and swarmed and followed by the paparazzi.

There was a law suit a decade or so ago after a high speed chase of Justin Beiber. The paparazzi were arrested for dangerous driving. Beiber also got a ticket for speeding. The paps tried to argue it was part of their job and their right as media but they lost.

There have been quite a few accidents related to paparazzi in the US. And celebs hitting paps or breaking their cameras to get space when crowded in a swarm.

If their statement had stuck to 'relentless pursuit' it would have been more accurate and believable then this near catastrophic car chase language that was so dramatic.
