Just heard this on the radio, does anyone have an actual source? Can't see it anywhere yet, I'm sure that is what I heard, assume not 'serious' as in risk to them?

This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers."

Doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. You can only be chased if you keep letting them. Just drive to a police station, a garage, pull over and call the cops.....you don't drive around like crazy people for 2 hours causing mayhem! WTF?

Exactly right - which is why they did that.

Bluebells1970 · 17/05/2023 19:07

Probably because said photographers were employed by H & M in the first place.....

Lolliesareonme · 17/05/2023 19:09

Maybe they are English paps that live in the US?

A bit like an English Prince that lives in the US now?

MmaRra · 17/05/2023 19:09

This thread isn't Mumsnet's finest hour and I can see why the other thread has been taken down. Such a lack of empathy being shown by some, especially given how Harry's mother died and during his childhood.

If I was being followed by some random person/people I absolutely would not just pull over, especially in America.

I suggest you shouldn’t do the same either.

No - I’d drive to the nearest police station, calling them en route to say I was afraid for my life and that of multiple others as I was being pursued by unknown assailants in a near-catastrophic manner.

But they had armed security with them. They weren't just on their own. Isn't that the job of security? Why not ring the police within the first 5 minutes. I doubt the NYPD would have spent 2 hours chasing paps round NYC.

StrawberryWasp · 17/05/2023 19:10

They were being followed by the paparazzi. Which I presume is annoying and inconvenient.

But if you don't want to be followed by the paparazzi don't make netflix documentaries about yourself, don't go on Oprah to talk about yourself, don't sell a book with intimate details about your life, don't go to glitzy award ceremonies in New York.

Instead live a quiet life where pics of you at the supermarket occasionally will soon become boring to the paps.

These two want to control everything. Look at me Now. But not Now (literally 5 mins later).

They really are their SoutPark caricatures. They might as well have been holding 'Stop Looking At Us' 'We want Privacy' signs.

Apparently not for 2 hours.

If you watch the TMZ footage to the end the paps filming that particular bit are definitely English.

Wonder why British paps were there?

Reply fail!

MsWhitworth · 17/05/2023 19:06

Yep, all their fault. They should have done this, or that, or the other. Why wouldn’t you? What’s wrong with them?

Hang on.

Where’s the criticism of the photographers following them in the first place?

The paparazzi are scum, and they shouldn't have followed them. It's disgraceful behaviour.

Harry & Meghan should not exaggerate what actually happened. All that has happened is they get more press.

If he's done this to garner sympathy and to create an issue due to his current court case, then that's stupid and has completely backfired on him.

Both NYPD and the Mayor haven't backed them up.

He is obviously deeply traumatised by what happened to his mother and he needs help IMO. It's clouding his judgment.

It is very disturbing.

I am confused by which entrance to the awards event they were taking? Looks like a car hire place and exactly glam. Odd juxtaposition with Meghan's $$$ super glam golden Mermaid outfit.

I wondered that. The room where the awards reception was held was a really big room, standard for an awards ceremony. Was the entrance made up like that because Hertz were sponsoring?

Bit of a derail I know, since the decor of the entrance isn't anything to do with H&M.

behaveasbefitsthesituationwillyas · 17/05/2023 19:13

The CNN piece said the paps were the ones on the sidewalks etc recklessly all over the place. I don't think it was a "high speed" chase, just a long chase, where they couldn't shake them off. But it seems if there was a collision it would have been one of the paps crashing into someone.

The NY police said there were no collisions.

A lot of posters on this thread seem to be following a specific script.

It didn't happened.
If it happened it wasn't that bad.
If it was bad , you deserved it.
But it didn't happen.

You can figure out what you sound like.

Prescottdanni123 · 17/05/2023 19:15

@4plusthehound

He wants British police to be his security team. It seems like a massive coincidence that this has happened during his battle to get that. Nah, I think it is all part of his plan to get that. Police officers on the ground in NY are saying its extremely unlikely to have been a 2 hour chase. People who have visited/loved in New York so it is extremely unlikely. Harry and Meghan have form for bullshit

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/05/2023 15:26

Bet there'll be a conspiracy theory about it very soon.

I'm not usually into conspiracy theories, but you have to wonder don't you?

According to online, they chose to avoid going in the main red carpet entrance, but went in via a side entrance. The side entrance was the hotels car rental franchise, and they went up to the event in a goods/staff elevator.

So we are expected to take as gospel everything 'their spokesperson' says and ignore all the other versions? I have 'empathy' for people in genuine danger.

polkadotdalmation · 17/05/2023 19:17

If you court publicity, put yourself into the public domain with Netflix, Spotify, Oprah and a book, you're going to attract paparazzi. So why all the drama?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/05/2023 19:17

(The RF) can - and have in the past - put out a statement, when it suits them. That's all they had to do, even just once, it would have made Harry feel more supported and less on his own

I hate to break it to you, but not long ago someone posted 20 plus quotes from the palace doing exactly that

I think it might have been you, @Serenster ... if you're about, still have the piece and can be bothered, is there any chance you could post it again please?
I'd do it myself, but these threads get so busy that I'd probably struggle to find it

friendlycat · 17/05/2023 19:17

I don't dispute that the paps behave in an awful way and it must be very disturbing to be followed by them.

But seriously their "spokesperson" really needs to get a grip on reality here. This has done no favours to their cause whatsoever. It's just backfired spectacularly and it was so unnecessary in the first place to put out the ridiculous statement that has been thoroughly contradicted.

NYPD statement:

Julian Phillips, the deputy commissioner of the New York Police Department, has said officers "assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex".
He continued: "There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard."
