Just heard this on the radio, does anyone have an actual source? Can't see it anywhere yet, I'm sure that is what I heard, assume not 'serious' as in risk to them?

Oh there's more. Spokesperson says 'near catastrophic' but nothing more so I assume not in hospital?

Sky news just broke it, news still coming in. 2 hour car chase and many involved, including NYPD, pedestrians and other cars, near catastrophic. OMG hope they're OK.

the80sweregreat · 17/05/2023 15:21

It was breaking news that Harry , Meghan and her mum were involved in a car chase with the press for two hours , but they didn't say where this was , I assume in the US.
No further information was given

Omg that's horrendous. Thank you (if you see what I mean). Bloody hell.

Thank you, working and one ear on the radio. They just clarified they meant 'chase' not 'collision' thank goodness

Not an accident, a 'nearly' accident.

heldinadream · 17/05/2023 15:24

Poor Harry. This is not going to help his state of mind. I hope they are all OK.

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 17/05/2023 15:24

It's like deja vu all over again!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/05/2023 15:26

Bet there'll be a conspiracy theory about it very soon.

Same here. Must have been very scary. Thankfully I don't think there was a crash, news stations are only receving the news slowly.

"Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and her mother were involved in a "near catastrophic" car chase after being followed by paparazzi, according to his spokesperson.

"The incident happened after Meghan and Harry had attended an awards ceremony in New York on Tuesday.
**
'This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers,' the spokesperson added."

So nobody had a collison?

Not so much deja vu as triggering retraumatisation. Poor bugger.

REP22 · 17/05/2023 15:29

It was yesterday, after an award ceremony.

Source is PH's "spokesperson". It was described as relentless and near-catastrophic, but I think only two police officers were involved. Nothing on BBC.

UndercoverCop · 17/05/2023 15:30

I don't understand this, why would you rather undertake a high speed car chase than have your picture taken? I get you might not want to be papped but surely it's better to be alive?! Also what about the risk to others with a car chase?
Not absolving paps -scum of the earth, but he is all people skills have learned how to react in these situations?
Also I think the decision to move to the US was not a good one, this wouldn't been highly unlikely in the UK with royal protection etc

OneFrenchEgg · 17/05/2023 15:30

Blimey, that was a 'blood goes cold' moment. I don't love his book, having read it, but I feel very sorry for him and obviously any kind of car chase is going to be so terrifying.

It's on sky at the moment
It happened last night

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 17/05/2023 15:31

@MrsTerryPratchett

You managed to put it so much better than I did!

Northernlurker · 17/05/2023 15:31

Shouldn't they have some sort of plan for this? Like stop their car for a start? Being pursued is awful and the paparazzi need to stop but I can't understand why you'd keep driving? It's cameras not terrorists. Although they may not have known that of course.
Agree it won't help their state of mind.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/05/2023 15:32

When will these scummy paparazzi ever learn?

Doggydarling · 17/05/2023 15:32

I don't understand the chase aspect of this. Why not rear tinted windows so they're not visible and no need to drive fast or dangerously. I'm pretty sure the paps can't follow them into their property or a private carpark if not going home. Maybe I'm missing something but this incident doesn't make sense to me going by the details given

mixedrecycling · 17/05/2023 15:33

Apparently it lasted 2 hours. Surely there should have been some sort of exit plan for that situation?

Strange that the UK tabloids are uniquely awful, but Diana's crash was in France, and this (alleged) chase in the USA...

Auntieobem · 17/05/2023 15:34

So they were followed by paparazzi then? Hardly news.

crumpet · 17/05/2023 15:34

A 2 hour car chase sounds extraordinary. And in New York too. I doubt OJ Simpson’s was as long.

But regardless, it is good that no-one was hurt.

MorrisZapp · 17/05/2023 15:35

Car chases don't just happen. Someone has to drive very fast in order for someone else to pursue them at high speed. Anyone with kids should ignore the paps and drive within the law.

LONDON, May 17 (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and her mother were involved in a "near catastrophic car chase" involving paparazzi photographers, a spokesperson for the prince said on Wednesday.
It occurred after the couple had attended an awards ceremony held in New York by the Ms. Foundation for Women, where Meghan was honoured for her work.

Pictures that have appeared on social media have shown Harry, Meghan and her mother, Doria Ragland, in a taxi.

"Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi," the spokesperson said in a statement.

"This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers."

Harry and Meghan stepped down from their royal roles in 2020 and moved to the United States partly because of what they described as intense media harassment.

The prince has long spoken out about his anger about press intrusion which he blames for the death of his mother Princess Diana, who was killed when her limousine crashed as it sped away from chasing paparazzi in Paris."
