Fuck it, I'm opening another one. If the mods delete it fair enough.

I don't believe the menopause or even alcoholism explains a woman vanishing into thin air with no evidence left behind.

This whole case stinks!

So you think the family are lying when they say people were threatening to sell stories?

I'd question who told the family that.

Anyway, I'll leave that now - we'll never know. My experience with the police influences how I feel towards their statement, and no doubt you being a police officer influences you. Nothing to be gained by going around in circles about something we'll never be privy to anyway.

Yes it's an admission that Nicola was or is going through a crisis. Doesn't really tally with what the family have been saying before.

It reads to me that we are where we are due not taking HRT?

Nobody was questioning why the police sprung into action immediately, so them releasing that information yesterday to explain why she was considered high-risk from day one doesn't make sense. I had assumed it was a high-risk case because a mum had gone missing leaving her dog/phone on site. I would expect the police to act immediately. This is not why they released that info - absolute bullshit.

People were questioning why they were so focused on the river, despite intensive searches coming up with nothing. A menopausal women who has some drink issues doesn't automatically mean she's taken her own life (which is very much what they're implying!) nor are they protective factors from harm. They can say they're keeping an open mind as much as they want, they can pretend their words have been misconstrued by the press - but they've said pretty much from day one she's in that river. As the days are ticking by and she's still not been found they're looking pretty desperate/stupid now.

The SIO was clearly rattled during the presser, she dodged the questions about the bench/red van/fishermen - the last 2 I can understand with it being an ongoing enquiry, but the bench still being in situ with the world and his wife traipsing all over it is a pretty big mistake to make if your river hypothesis is wrong.

Their whole hypothesis seems to stem from Nikki experiencing menopause issues - that should concern us all. They released that info yesterday to take the heat off themselves which is pretty fucking appalling.

And why do they keep going on about 'paths' - 'she was not seen on the path covered by cctv' - have these people never cut across a field? Jumped over a fence? Not everyone uses designated entrances/exits ffs - especially if they don't want to be seen.

A water-loving dog doesn't just sit nicely waiting whilst you go off to drown yourself in a shallow river 🙄

Whole thing reeks.

This this this this this.

Yesterday's police statement dehumanised Nicola, today's family statement portrayed her as Nicola Bulley, an ordinary woman struggling with life's problems.

Not carrying out forensics on and around the bench is a dreadful oversight. The SIO dodged that question at the presser, replying that they had "searched the area" which isn't the same thing.

The investigation has been a mess from the start.

Well it does if the narrative was for the last week that "nothing untoward had happened" (SI Riley) and that the family could see no reason at wall why she would want to harm herself or disappear.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 16/02/2023 15:32

Rempf · 16/02/2023 15:27

Thought this part of the statement wouldn't have be quite so definite-

which caused Nikki to stop taking the HRT thinking that may have helped her but only ended up causing this crisis.’

I read "this crisis" to mean Nicola's issues with alcohol, not her disappearance?

Last 3 weeks I meant to say

Nicknacky · 16/02/2023 15:33

@Goldpaw You mention forensics and your criticism of that a lot, what is your understanding of “forensics”?

What is it you think should have been done that wasn’t done? I’m genuinely interested in this as it is something you are very critical about.

But these things aren't anybody's business. What difference does it make to anyone who matters in the investigation? How does it help the investigation?

Well yes but there's been no mention of acknowledgement of any crisis by the family until this point. to the contrary tbh

The family have been saying for the last 3 weeks that they aren't happy with the investigation, don't believe she would have harmed herself, don't believe she was in the river. If I were a police officer I'd be asking myself why are you putting forward this narrative in public, one that is so far from reality.

I took the word crisis to refer to the current situation- who knows I guess.

lemmein · 16/02/2023 15:36

No I don't think the family are lying. Yes I think the police told them the story was going to be leaked. No, I don't believe it was going to be leaked. Yes I think the police are covering their arses.

Bizarre you couldn't work out what I was saying from my posts but I hope that puts an end to it now I've spelt it out in simple terms.

Also yes, I believe pressure would've been put on the family to toe the line, and as they're dependent on the police to find Nikki they've agreed to issue a 'joint' statement. Not unusual in these cases - like I said, the McCanns supported the police till they left Portugal!

Ive not seen much comment from actual family members aside from PA?

I've just looked at NBs Facebook business profile. She comes across as super organised and on the ball. I don't believe this alcohol narrative. I'm sorry but I don't.

I was directed to her Linkedin profile earlier. Looks like she had some time out of the workplace (timing corresponds with the age of her eldest DC) and then returned to work last year possibly after her youngest started school.

She sounds very professional with a lot of experience in her field. Strange that she could hold down a relatively newly acquired job while having 'significant alcohol issues' especially as it is a public facing role - mortgage advisor.

I certainly don't want to do her down in that she possibly found it hard returning to work after being a SAHM while suffering menopausal symptoms and possibly carrying on doing most of the household and child stuff. My DH and I had lots of issues regarding that when I returned to work after a long time as a SAHM as he was used to me doing everything.

She looks very capable though, made time to properly exercise her dog daily, multi tasking while doing so arranging play dates and being on work calls.

She obviously did the school run and dog walk regularly as her DH said he would normally load the car and strap the DC in for her even though his work started later in the day and he'd then have a bit of 'me time' after they left before he started work.

If my DH was a heavy drinker, there no way I would let him get up and do the school run if I was also at home, because you'd assume Nicola would be drinking at night if she was holding down a job during the day and she was obviously actively employed until the day she went missing, hadn't been signed off, as it was reported that she'd had work meetings the day before and was on a teams meeting call that morning.

I just can't get past that poor woman possibly having met with foul play and not here to defend herself, while she's being painted as a mentally unstable, alcoholic who ditched her DC and left her dog running loose where it could have to harm.

Her poor daughters will read all the media reports when they're older and if she's never found (because the police lost valuable time chasing a hypothesis based on that picture), they might believe it when it may be nothing like the truth.

True, most have gone quiet apart from Paul and friends of family. We've heard nothing from her parents since the first day or so.

Presumably because they want to accelerate every line of enquiry, and would much prefer to think that she can be found alive somewhere.

It doesn't matter why to us though does it? It's their business, not ours.

Not in the grand scheme of things, no it doesn't matter to us at all. Just suggesting it might matter to someone closer to the investigation.

On the other hand, the family have very much appealed to the public over the heads of the police. Urging people not to accept she went in the water, and expressing their unhappiness with the police investigation, so it inevitably does draw in speculation. It's human nature, you can't have the interest without the speculation. And if people see changes in narrative, then that good will and support is at risk.

Without being too nuanced on the wording used- I think the key here is "family" statement- PA has been critical of the Police at times, Im not sure her parents/sister have.

Goldpaw · 16/02/2023 15:52

Quite. No wonder PA wanted to portray her as an ordinary mum and partner, trying to get away from the assumptions the police have made.

One of the interviews with a retired detective mentioned that stating the main hypothesis was Nicola being in the river would result in people not looking out for her if she'd walked away.

Bluekerfuffle · 16/02/2023 15:52

That probably had a lot to do with an expert popping up saying he knew everything about everything and she wasn’t in the river in his opinion. Then searching the river and saying she definitely wasn’t in it.
