I posted this on the other thread, but I'm going to repeat it here for those that think discussing cases online is 'tittle-tattle'
On the subject of online speculation and 'armchair detectives'....without the aid of 'web sleuths' Marion Barter's family (of The Lady Vanishes podcast) would still be hitting a brick wall with the police insisting she was a missing person who left of her own accord.
The podcast gained worldwide attention which forced a formal review of the case which, in turn, resulted in further investigation. It also gained enough traction that the case was referred to the coroners court and an inquest was opened - the family are closer than ever to finding out what happened to Marion.
All of this was possible because of one 'web-sleuth' who found a lonely hearts ad, which they followed up and found a man, completely unknown to Marion's family who astonishingly admitted to having an 'affair' with her. Further investigation into this man had revealed he has a history of conning women. Nobody had heard of this man, none of Marion's friends or family - he was only found because of online-speculation.
The case is still unsolved as far as I know, but without the 'online speculation' Marion's daughter would be left with only the police narrative that her mum had willingly left.
I think the 'oh PA twitched and rubbed his nose therefore he's guilty' posts should be removed - but general discussion of this bizarre case is not harmful to the investigation and it's a shame people have been silenced on this.
A link to Marion's disappearance if you've never heard of her - fascinating case:
