Missing Woman Nicola Bulley 8

Here's the new thread

My phone is playing up. I wrote a FAQ and then it crashed and I lost it all.

I'm also dealing with a child on the spectrum who is bouncing off the walls this evening so I apologise for not being around much.

I hope this woman gets found, what a sad, strange, unusual and interesting case.

I am finding the moralising mob slapping posters who want to discuss NB's disappearance down and the constant personal attacks quite disturbing. They do have an unusual posting style and I can't quite remember any other MN threads with this sort of concerted antagonistic and aggressive effort to shut a discussion down.

It reminds me of when MRAs invade threads, they don't write like women on here normally do.

Person was saying - the area was cordoned off the day it happened. Forensic teams came down and divers went in. The ground forensic search team didn't find anything - think this team were the team who also confirmed no slip marks into the river. The area was sealed during this forensic search. But was re-opened again because it's a public area. Its possible that SI Riley said it when answering questions after the press conference. But I just can't be sure

If the ground team didn't find anything on the banks, then I don't really see why they are so sure she went in to the water. Because wouldn't there be some signs of someone slipping/falling? Recently broken vegetation, skidmarks in mud?

"Police will look into all sex offenders to crack Nicola Bulley case, ex-cop says"

Not new info, just ex police explaining what the police will be doing.

"This is down the road from where my parents live, my mum joined the search last week."

@NicolaThorp_ explains that locals who've been searching for Nicola Bulley have a "huge distrust" in the police.

She explains it's because they "messed up their communication."

I wish people on here would stop dismissing those who disagree with some of the things posted as trolls and sock puppets. I disagree with some of what is said and I reserve the right to challenge and disagree. I believe in healthy debate and for that reason I think these threads should be allowed to stand as long as attacks and speculation don't become personal. It doesn't make me a sock puppet or a troll and it's insulting and ignorant to say that about people who have a different point of view.

I think there's been good discussion. I personally am dismissive of the posters who feel the need to berate and be rude to other posters.

I wouldn’t read too much into ex detectives being critical of the investigation. I doubt they are in possession of the full facts and are only working on hearsay to. It’s just clickbait for the papers.

I get what you're saying, but suggesting things like taking the bench away for forensics is what might be described as forensics 101. Something that could have been done at the start when she'd only been potentially gone for a couple of hours. There may not have been any trace of Nicola on or near the bench. It was a missed opportunity. One of many.

No they aren't in possession of all the facts, but they can see the bench wasn't taken away, for instance, and they are aware of other things that weren't done that may have aided the investigation.

So I think it's valid to say let's not dismiss what they say just because they're not part of the investigation. It's obvious to many that the police have missed things. And these are experienced people commenting not random members of the public.

What does it matter if you take EmLouise's post at face value - who are you trying to save face for?

Challenging and disagreeing is great, that's what makes a discussion. Just the last couple of days there have been a flood of personal attacks about posters just for posting on the thread. Not proper discussion just attempts to derail and get the thread deleted.

I actually agree with the posters who rightly point out that speculation and accusations are harmful and disrespectful. Many of these posts are reported and deleted.

Discussing the events, personal safety, police conferences, news articles (this is the News section afterall) should be, and is, allowed.

Bullying and personal attacks are as unwelcome as harmful speculation; I admit there's a grey area with some deeming it entirely disrespectful to comment in any capacity but that's down to an individual's personal preferences and shouldn't be censored.

I can't imagine the torture the family are going through, I'm compelled to follow and comment through compassion for Nicola as well as a sense of female solidarity.

This is obviously true
Emma is on one of the Facebook pages though. That's where some of the early information came from.

In the nicest possible way, how can you make "Emma is on one of the Facebook pages" mean that "a random person calling herself Em on Mumsnet is the same Emma as the person I know who's on Facebook"?

It's a bit of a leap.

In your first reply to me, you did cite Emma White being on Facebook as a reason why this person could be the same Emma White. Of course it's possible that it's the same person. It's equally possible that it's a random weirdo who's overly interested in someone else's terrible misfortune.

Oaktree55 · 13/02/2023 11:24

Living near water I have a v basic knowledge of safety, but since this tragedy and how it’s raised the issue of what accident may have happened and some expert disagreement on what’s possible I’ve been reading more because something positive may as well come from this and if just a few people on these threads learn something and tell their children etc than that’s surely worth something.

It seems contrary to what I assumed clothing of any sort will initially help floatation. Especially clothing with big airspaces eg winter coats. Also the initial gasp from shock on hitting cold water (I assume of min depth if go face first) is what is most lethal as you naturally inhale a huge amount.

This is quite a nerdy video but I hadn’t realised quite how many people drown in U.K. and although I knew the U.K. waters are still v cold in June but warmest September/October I’m not sure most know this? Why so many accidents occur as soon as we get warm June weather.

Anyway in case anyone is interested I learnt from this and it perhaps adds credence to police’s main theory.

This is kind of what I mean about being careful about what you are reading. I can’t see that MWT talks about removing the bench within a couple of hours. Within 48hrs is the only direct quoted time given in the article.

Which is why when you get to the point where media outlets are printing clickbait to make money it isn’t necessarily helpful to the investigation and can be actively harmful. The U.K. media are kinky known for their accuracy in reporting.

Just can’t have so many people questioning how she could drown in such shallow water when it’s very much possible. That’s why I think that private scan guy is being unprofessional he must know this and he should at least convey how it is an possibility even though we don’t know what’s happened in this particular case.

No one is saying it's impossible to drown in a shallow bit of water. What seems impossible is that if she fell in where police suspect she fell in, she wouldn't have been carried off out of sight in the timeframes given. From what I can gather, it was shallow at the edges to the point if anyone slipped in they would be able to just stand back up. Then there is the fact of the weir, the river was not in flood so it's unlikely she would have gone over the weir or even reached the weir in the time before searching started.

SoTedious · 13/02/2023 11:59

I still can't work out why, if Nicola didn't go into the water, the dog didn't follow her when she left the area. The bench seems an odd place for the dog to hang out.

The gate is a kissing gate where she wouldn't be able to get through.
She was running between the bench and the gate apparently

But it looks as though next to the kidding gate is ordinary wooden fencing which a spaniel could get through easily.

I think Willow's behaviour might indicate that she didn't see where Nicola went - that kind of reaction you see when you play hide and seek with some dogs who become agitated rather than staying calm and sniffing you out.
