My point is its difficult to live without any financial trail at all, forever. Would imagine most of that 1.3 million fit into other categories, like they're old people who've never had a bank account and they go to the post office to draw their pension in cash, or they're spouses of ethnic minorities who live off their partner's income and don't have an account of their own.

The homeless have to eat, they'd be known to homeless shelters and they also get money from the job centre sometimes.

You can't live in this country without access to money (or someone else's money) in the long term

I'm sorry but you are wrong. Homeless shelters do not enquire who people are, or maintain records of them. Very few old people now don't have a bank acount because it is nigh on impossible to draw your pension without one. Etc. Etc. I was at our local CCTV service a few weeks ago and you wouldn't believe the number of "missing people" they have listed for many years. The reality is that if someone wishes to go missing it is really easy, even without creating a false identity; and creating a false identity isn't as hard as you'd assume either. You also assume that people going missing in the UK stay in the UK. If you have a will to disappear, it is far easier than you'd think, and even when those people are reported missing (some aren't) the police don't have the resources to go looking for them all. The will only seriously look for someone if they have reasonabe grounds to suspect a crime has been committed or the person is vulnerable. And without evidence of either, they have no grounds to go searching for them beyond the obvious and limited options.

I work with disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, and I see people who have little or no "identity" all the time, and many of those are people who have made no attempt whatsoever to disappear. They simply live below the "radar" that much of society can buy into, If you choose to not buy into it you can go missing for years if not forever.

In the parents statement her dad said they stayed looking after the children later the night before she vanished because she had a zoom meeting. I didn’t see anything about her meeting her boss the night before. Or was the late evening zoom meeting with her boss?

I bet there are stats that show the most common methods for each sex. I can't imagine drowning is very common in women either.

From the stats posted by PP - it’s 232 drowning by suicide / year (if I understood that correctly) which is more than 4 / week. I suspect a % of those are female.

It is tricky for PF because he went in over-confident and the family pinned all their hopes on him. He knows that he may have to walk away soon with nothing and it will be devastating for them. He could have been more measured in the beginning. I don't think he did it on purpose - it is his personality and his professional pride based on a long track record.

It wasn’t really nearer the water though it was nearer the bench, hence my comment.

Eh ? Nearer than what ? The dog was allegedly running between the bench and the gate, the harness was nearer to the water.
I didn’t say it was close to the water’s edge, just nearer than the dog.

Plitvice · 09/02/2023 12:32

Well, there are a lot of missing people and political aliens in the UK who never become 'official'. Some are conspiracy theorists who believe that they are preventing themselves from being enslaved by 'the matrix', others have evaded deportation or criminal investigation. Many are young immigrant women (often very young) who have been sex trafficked to work in brothels. I don't see Nicola as fitting into any of those categories. She was settled, well connected with family and professional responsibilities. I doubt she would even know how to pull off a disappearance.

Commonsensitivity · 09/02/2023 12:35

There's a forested area nearby isn't there? She could have been dragged into the bushes. She wouldn't be seen by passers by then. I hope the small wooded areas have been searched too.

This bickering back and forth is pointless and ruining the thread, move on.

He's already walked away. They pulled out yesterday

Where on earth are you getting the idea her belongings were all scattered? None of her belongings have been found and no-one has ever said that.

I’m quoting the poster I’m responding to, particularly about the Fitbit possibly being in the river.
And yes, her belongings were scattered about - the phone was on the ground a couple of feet from the bench. Another walker found it and placed it on the bench, the dog’s harness was found between the bench and the river (the dog’s harness was often removed for that part of the walk) and the dog was running free.

I also don't get why people think the area is pretty, maybe because this has happened I feel this way but I get a bad vibe from it, it looks lonely and creepy there and I love countryside areas and such but I've not liked anything I've seen

100% totally creepy, the whole area. You couldn't have found a 'better' scene for a crime novel. The colours this time of year, the river, the bench with the gloomy path behind, you wouldn't find me walking there.

But he was right and ‘successful’ from his POV.

His initial stance was ‘if’ she is in there he will find her. He hasn’t so he can stand by his claim that she’s not in there (area where he searched).

He had no business with his conjecture on foul play.

There are still other statistically more likely options - she has taken herself off somewhere / she has taken her own life somewhere else etc. - these aren’t ‘foul play’ and are more likely than an abduction.

I suspect that the police have private, sensitive, personal information which it is not appropriate to share with the public as it is confidential - which they may have had from the start and/or has been built on as they have looked into her personal life over the last two weeks.

I am struck by the lack of appeal for her to come home by any family member. Maybe they have more info.

It seems it’s the 3 friends who are more front and centre of communications and initiatives.

That's really sad. I hope he has also learned something about what not to announce publicly before he has even investigated a case.

I just find speculation and armchair detectives fucking disgraceful

have done compassion and respect

Plitvice · 09/02/2023 12:45

I now remember her friend saying that they hope that she was not found in the water so, possibly, he has given them what they want to hear in that sense.

NothingButAWalkover · 09/02/2023 12:45

Seen this on Twitter and copied the text from there - the absolute first I have heard about anyone using drones:

'Police say it’s still a possibility Nicola Bulley left the area by one pathway not covered by cameras. In the meantime they haven’t: 1) Appealed for persons seen using a drone around the same times/days as her routine
2) Suggested women don’t walk alone or change their routine'

Anyone else heard about drones being used by someone in the vicinity?

I've heard nothing about drones at all

m.youtube.com/watch?v=I-48W8rFzFU - have a look at this video from the summer (skip past the church yard at the beginning) - it looks stunning.

Also these photos

I can see why it is a holiday destination.

It does look bleak in the winter tho.

Her phone was found on the ground and placed on the bench by another Walker. Have a Google.

No it wasn't. It was found on the bench. This is well established. There is no evidence of stuff being chucked all over the place.

Baileysandcream · 09/02/2023 12:52

My thoughts on planning her own disappearance to start a new life - surely there would be some research that you'd do first? I would imagine that the police have checked her internet activity to get a better picture of what was going on in her life and what she might have been thinking.

Also, I can't imagine not getting in touch with a family member or good friend- if my family was so loving and close to let them know I was safe if I was able to do so - particularly given the publicity surrounding this. It would break my heart to see the pain of my family.

One of the reasons this case has been so visible in the media is because friends and family have helped to keep it there - surely if anyone close believed this was intentional, it would be better to let the case drop and the publicity die down?

I know I'm projecting my own logic and thoughts onto this, but I find it hard to believe that if Nicola was safe somewhere, she wouldn't have let someone close to her know by now.

davegrohll · 09/02/2023 12:52

Just goes to show how much false information/confusion there is over this as I also read her phone was found on the ground and placed on the bench
