If Putin does detonate a nuclear bomb ...

... what do you think the West will do?

Biden seems to be taking the threat very seriously and the Ukraine govt has handed out iodine tablets to it's citizens, so they seem to be taking it seriously too.

I've got no idea but interested in seeing replies. I've been joking about it saying at least we won't have to go to work the next day. But in all seriousness god help us all.

Threadkillacilla · 07/10/2022 15:56

Depends where he detonated it.

Babdoc · 07/10/2022 15:58

Russia is next door to Ukraine and the prevailing wind would blow the fallout straight towards Russia, so Putin certainly isn’t going to launch anything major. A small tactical battlefield nuke possibly.

Okay, I've seen this said elsewhere (in the news), but still, I wonder what the West will do if he does that. Obviously, we don't want to provoke anything worse, but OTOH, if they do nothing then that looks ridiculously weak and makes Putin look like the big, strong man that he wants to be.

When Chernobyl exploded welsh sheep were radioactive for 26 years. Wherever Putin detonates a nuclear bomb we will all be affected. I can't see China being happy about that.

Just looking through my window at the beautiful blue and pink skies. Birds flying and chirping happily mean while some power mad
Man is threatening to destroy the whole earth ! How has this been allowed to happen ? 😞

lemmein · 07/10/2022 18:47

The west should put a massive price on his head - make him fear his own security! All this 'playing nice' isn't really working is it? One man should not be able to hold the whole world to ransom.

BertaHoon · 07/10/2022 18:51

Putin is in a bunker, nowhere near a "button".

I would think and hope that if he did give that command that generals in control would slit his throat and declare him dead of heart failure (not untrue).

His people do not want to fight his war, including his closest allies.

He will be deposed or dead soon.

Exactly, I was at school at the time. Told we didn't need vinegar on our chips in paper, acid rain was plenty.

Nobody is going to let an ill man destroy the world.

BertaHoon · 07/10/2022 18:54

For what it's worth, Biden doesn't even know what day of the week it is.

True, but I suspect his advisors and speech-writers do!

Well they don't make him stop spouting confused nonsense do they? They've had plenty of opportunity. He's an embarrassment. So was Trump.
Nobody is really listening to America at the moment.

doubt it, the rain will bring it this way, just like it did with the fallout from Chernobyl. That fall out caused future mutations to generations of sheep, and seeped into the soil, and affected farmers in Scotland, north of England and Wales for many many years.

BBC has a piece quoting Biden as saying that this is the riskiest moment since 1962, which nicely ramps up the rhetoric

But he really isn't Kennedy

FindingMeno · 07/10/2022 19:00

Quite honestly I think one nuke, even a tactical battlefield strike, would lead to escalation.
Not necessarily an all out immediate nuclear apocalypse, but a nuclear response which may then snowball.

Ramping it up indeed.

Nobody need bother with the assassination... Pop a balloon and shout bang.

Actually don't, I've got a UTI and it would likely make me want to nuke you 😁

MayThe4th · 07/10/2022 19:06

Well, judging by the state of the rest of his weaponry I wouldn’t be so sure his nukes are any good anyway.

And while this is not going to be a popular opinion, Zelensky: seems to love stirring up panic.
I feel for the Ukrainian people, but I really don’t like him.

That’s really not correct. A “tactical” nuclear bomb will affect a very small area.

1dayatatime · 07/10/2022 19:20

Plan A by Princeton University gives a plausible simulation of what would happen if the Russians launched a single tactical nuke attack.

What would radioactive fallout have to do with acid rain?
