Ukraine.. Ignorance

There are about 300 threads on MN now about Ukraine. A lot of very opinionated people who probably wouldn't be able to point Ukraine on the map and never ever had any interest in the region. There is zero knowledge of the internal violent conflicts in the country, but a lot of messages about 'hero president' or even worse threads to United Kingdom.
I hate Putin passionately as he impacted the life of some people who are dear to me. The conflict will have much worse long term impact on Russia itself rather than Ukraine and he doesn't give a shit.
I respect people's opinions as long as they are educated.
Putin is quite obviously in the wrong as he is breaking the international law and there is no excuse for that, but the overall situation is triggered by US involvement in Ukrainian internal politics as much as Russian interference. There must be consequences for Putin, but also acknowledgment of the impact of US foreign politics in the current conflict.
As usual, simple civilians on both sides will be the victims.

I have not commented on any thread because I know so little about it.
I would not criticise anyone for not knowing about it, that’s like calling a child ignorant when they have not learned about something yet.

I’m hoping to learn something.

So, what exactly are you trying to say?
That only educated people with a thorough knowledge of Eastern European politics, law and economics should be posting on MN?

You’ve started a thread to say you only respect some opinions. It’s an odd choice. What is your AIBU? Is it I only respect opinions I agree with?

Most of the threads that I have seen have just been about compassion for the people of Ukraine though? You don't need a doctorate in international politics to express compassion for victims of war do you?

And I am sure I am by no means alone in having a relative (a Ukrainian national) in Ukraine. So actually I can do a lot more than locate the country on an atlas.

Why don't you join some of the threads are explain things the way you see them?

What's the point of this thread? How is it helping anyone? How is it addressing the ignorance you feel is there?

your post will be ignored, people just ignore what they dont want to hear.

I realised that the other day with everyone saying putin was crazy look he is going on about neo nazis and drugs thats proof he's crazy.

no thats proof he's still bitter about 2014 and thats what he was talking about, it wasnt that long ago, I am surprised people seem so ignorant we were all alive 8 years ago.

Nobody needs a masters in geopolitics to have compassion for people who are suffering unimaginable horror

Why don’t you explain your point of view, then? Explain why you think US foreign policy has exacerbated things?

I think the political discussion on MN is a good thing. I suspect you are wanting to develop a thread which places the reasons for the conflict at the door of NATO and the West rather than Putin.

What I find rather remarkable about this is the 'international solidarity' from countries like Israel, France and US who passionately believe you can't just invade a country and declare it yours. It's almost as though self-awareness is a mythical beast.

It's a major world event. People will have opinions, and it's ridiculous to expect that all of them will be experts in Russian politics. "Educating" yourself very much depends on the sources you use as almost every source carries some form of bias. Did you have opinions on Covid, OP? Are you a virologist in that case?

I had a quick google the other day, as you do.

My take on it is that various Ukranian presidents have either reneged on agreements signed in the past or vassilated between Putin-supporting or west-supporting and Putin has got fed up with Ukraine not doing what it said it would do and picked off strategic Russia-supporting areas around the edge. He has now decided to take the rest of it.

Not saying that I have the facts correct, or saying that Putin is justified in any way, but it sounds like Ukrainian politics has had a minor hand in the fuck up.

Last take on it - men waving willies. It was ever the way.

Why don’t you educate us all then?

Post a few articles or links to books to read.
Some sources for us to look at.

Or are you just showing off?

men are dickheads the age old problem.

if women ruled the men would soon march in and put them in their place causing countless deaths and destruction.

if I recall correctly Korea was once ruled by women until the Chinese swanned in took over and put their boots on everyones faces especially women so they could never rule again.

Or possibly positions change. UK was once part of slave trading then moved to abolish it. I'm not sure what purpose it would have served to try and stop the abolishment movement because you were offended by the 'hypocrisy' of a changed view that had come to understand our previous behaviour was wrong?

We can all have done shit regrettable things in the past but that doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't try to do better in the present.
