...for young women?

Apparently she's earned £30 million through TV, books, etc.

We seem to be straying off the point a bit Bundle. What I'm trying to get at is the knee-jerk "OMG she's a bad role model!" crap that so many young women in the media get, when apart from Pete Docherty I can't think of any men who get anything like that kind of level of nonsense thrown at them. It's roots lie in sexism.

I think it's part of the reason that the media likes to make women like them famous so they can encourage the five minutes of hate against them. They pay them to reveal their private lives then we all get to sit around reading about them and judging them (harshly). Most of these women are pretty harmless in the scheme of things - they aren't violent, they aren't criminals, they aren't the leaders of political parties that promote hatred against certain sectors of the community, but to hear the way some people talk about them, you'd think we'd better get the bonfire built and our matches at the ready.

I don't see how you can have a 'bad' male role model. 'Bad' being detrimental to blokes as a whole. If you're in a position of strength, socially, economically and politically, I don't see how a bad role model can exist.

Richard Desmond, like Hefner, is a pimp. Some women choose to be their whores.Jordan is one of them. Desmond owns OK magazine and she is on the cover almost every week. They make money for eachother.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 19:33

donnie, can I just say congratulations on the controversial word of the week award.
Jeez, she isn't a whore, use your words properly.

HarkThegeekymummySings · 18/12/2007 19:48

Ok, so men don't get as much criticism for being negative role models.

It doesn't mean that we should unquestioningly accept women such as Jordan for young women to look up to.

No Jordan doesn't do drugs a la Winehouse, Doherty, Moss et al, but her former career as a glamour model is hardly praiseworthy.

Brummie, I'd have to disagree with you, I feel that there are poor male role models. For examples rappers who glorify violence and misogyny for young men to emulate.

havalina · 18/12/2007 19:58

Maybe I'm a pessimist but women are judged on their looks by other women and men alike and I don't think this is ever going to change. We can fight for equality and equanimity but realistically we will always be judged on appearance, this is sad for me (fat ugly bird) good for women like Jordan who can capitalise to the tune of millions.

The OP asked about Jordan in the context of role models for young women. As I have three young women to be myself, I commented.

Had the OP been talking about any particular man in the context of role-models for young men, I'd have commented because of the young man to be in this house.

I actually think the idea of role models is rather far removed from the way we do things in today's culture anyway. The prevailing attitude is about as far away from thinking about the influnece you have on others as can be.

Back to the topic of Jordan. She is on the front page of OK dressed as the VIRGIN MARY with her family similarily attired in nativity outfits.

All is forgiven - she gave me the biggest laugh of the week. Truly funny.

SueBaRoomForAMincePie · 19/12/2007 19:10

whoo, boy, that's going to get some knickers a twistin'

deckthehallswithgeekymummy · 20/12/2007 10:10

is this empowering?

micci25 · 20/12/2007 10:31

i dont think jordan set out to make herself a role model i think she set out to make money i personally dont see anything wrong with her choice, as long as it was her choice and not an abusive partners and as far i as know it was hr choice.

personally i think she is a great person she has a happ marriage three beatifull children who are obviously well looked after and she stands up for what she believes in even though she knows most ppl will vilify her for those opinions.

but then before i had my kids i made my money as a lapdancer so obviously i wouldnt see anything wrong her choice of career. and no i didnt feel degraded or objectified i actually felt i was making a hell of a lot of money doing something i enjoyed.

and another point should children really be reading cosmo?
