Jordan on cover of Cosmo. What does that say about today's role models...

...for young women?

Apparently she's earned £30 million through TV, books, etc.

OP posts:

Jolie what makes you think 'a saggy titted old feminist working at the Dartford toll tunnel' isn't 'in control of (her) image'?

She has chosen those khaki dungarees. She has chosen not to bother getting a haircut. She has chosen to rely on other aspects (personality, wit, intelligence, humanity) to go about her daily life.
She hasn't become a distorted fantasy image of womanhood created entirely by men, and thick loser type men at that.

I reckon.

Saturn74 · 18/12/2007 11:50

Don't like boxing either.
So not an effective comparison.

MerryPIFFLEmas · 18/12/2007 11:51

ok
Who really views anyone on the cover of Cosmo as a role model FFS

Her headline on the cover is..
"My insecurities about Pete and my body"

Not abour being an inspiration to young girls.

cosmo is tat for tarts IMO

Cosmo is shite I agree. Most magazines are. Some women these days read newspapers I heard. Broadsheets even.

edam · 18/12/2007 11:53

I haven't seen anyone 'blaming' Jordan, just saying she's not a great role model. She's made her choices in a particular context of endemic sexism. 20 per cent pay gap, only 3 per cent of reported rape cases ending in conviction - we are an awful long way from true equality.

but jordan isn't making money by getting her tits out any more - oh no - she's making money by exploiting her children, esp harvy who doesn't even know that he's being plastered all over the trashy mags to earn his mother money . role model my arse.

Mincepiedermama · 18/12/2007 11:53

Well said edam.

EniDeepMidwinter · 18/12/2007 11:54

she is vile

and if my three dds looked to her as a role model I would seriously feel as though I had failed as a parent

dweezle · 18/12/2007 11:54

Interesting although somewhat slewed piece on Radio4 'Today' this morning with Sarah Montague looking at how the perception of feminism has changed - Sarah, like me, is in her forties, and was comparing her attitudes to the way women behave and are perceived with the attitude of a colleague of hers who is 13 years younger.

Have to say, my attitude was in line with Ms Montague's - the way young women are seen today makes a mockery of the struggle to obtain equal pay/status in the world. Was also quite worried about the response of the young men interviewed - if a young woman wears a short skirt / drinks a lot / flirts, she is obviously 'asking for it'.

Why do so many young women see success as being a glamour model / WAG? Where are all the scientists and linguists. I know there are a lot of young women achieving great things - more female doctors qualifying than male doctors for example, but WHY are these things not celebrated in the media. OK, I know it doesn't make for such a 'good' story, but as usual, many young women have a skewed idea of what they can achieve because they have 'sleb culture' thrust at them by tripey magazines and tabloid newspapers.

God help me I'm becoming my mother.............

HarkThegeekymummySings · 18/12/2007 11:57

Not saying Jordan is solely to blame for the objectification of women but IMO she and others of her ilk are simply not good role models.

Just because some men decide to take up illegal pugilism, it's ok to make money the way Jordan has.

Right...

Mincepiedermama · 18/12/2007 11:57

Yes dweezle I enjoyed that. There was just time for John Humphreys, the gooseberry, to squeeze in a quick, 'right. Bye' before the 9 o'clock news. It was great radio. I want more of the same.

Why is Woman's Hour always about Burma of Afghanistan these days?

stockingfiller · 18/12/2007 11:58

have you read her biographies?

allIWannaBeForChristmas · 18/12/2007 12:03

why would anyone want to read her biographies? why?

HarkThegeekymummySings · 18/12/2007 12:05

I think HumphreyCushion hit the nail on the head:

"Depends on whether you judge success in purely monetary terms, I suppose."

Isn't fame and sleb culture ultimately about that? What is success? What values would we like our young women to adopt and aspire to? How and what should we teach young men to respect women?

LoveAngelGabriel · 18/12/2007 12:05

Isn't Cosmo full of horrifiic articles about how to 'cleverly hide your fat stomach while giving your man the perfect blowjob and climbing your way to the top of your career,. all by the time you're 22'...or similar? it's a porn-tastic rag, anyhoo. Jordan is probably perfect for it's readership.

HarkThegeekymummySings · 18/12/2007 12:07

wannabe - do you remember one upon a time one had to had led a longer, distinguished life to have an memoirs published

allIWannaBeForChristmas · 18/12/2007 12:17

well once upon a time one had to have achieved something to have them published and what has jordan achieved exactly?

tbh I don't think that having become famous for getting your tits out is something to be proud of! and certainly not worthy of a biography!

SueBaRoomForAMincePie · 18/12/2007 12:37

Well, I don't read magazines anyway (except for Country Kitchen, and you should see the birds in that!)

But I do think it's interesting the way feminism seems to have eaten itself. Jordan is a modern feminist icon because, although she objectifies herself sexually, she is the one making the choices, rather than others making the choices for her.

I think that's a bit crap, really.

ahundredtimes · 18/12/2007 12:50

Oh god it's utter crap.

So is she.

Who really thinks she's a role model fgs? She's a freak, she makes freak shows with her orange husband and has freak weddings.

Everybody knows this. Nobody respects her do they? She's a freak show star, she peddles this endlessly with her malformed body. Everybody stares, and they're freakish too for staring so hard.

sfxmum · 18/12/2007 12:51

I don't know where 'getting the tits out' became a statement of a liberated woman.

I worry a lot more about this these days since I have a daughter.

I expect she will have to struggle with body image, less pay, difficult choices with fertility/ work career family etc

all quite sad

Buffy is a much better role model

kerala · 18/12/2007 12:58

Sadly Jordan is a role model for many. The younger secretaries at work poured over her books and lapped up the magazine articles.

Its tres depressing. Agreed with Natasha Walter on the radio this morning - how sad it is that young women who dont buy into this sleb/looks and sex obsessed culture are derided. Sadly girls dressing tartily may feel they are being liberated and "doing it for themselves" but guys looking at them are not thinking that at all.

LadySnowsAlot · 18/12/2007 13:03

personally i think jordan is the perfect represntative for that mag. inside it you wil find tips on how to wear make up to look like other people, tips on how to lose weight tips on how to keep a man happy in bed etc.

not a great attitude for young women: basically look great and people will want to sleep with you.

such a load of bollocks. jordan should be on there every week imo

kittylouise · 18/12/2007 13:10

For christ's sake.

I remember when Cosmo was actually inspiring and had a feminist slant, concentrating on womens' careers, aspirations and support. And it wasn't that bloody long ago.

Then it turned into a crappy, glossy pile of shit like everything else.

Jordan is emphatically not a feminist icon in my opinion. So she is in control of her image - big deal. She is in control of an image that is designed solely for the purpose of pleasuring men, there is no intelligent thought in it at all.

All this post-feminist 'women in control' is just crap.
