So will it be Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?

Personally, I would love to see Barack Obama do it but race issues being what they are in the USA, I can't see it happening.

Hillary Clinton has Bill on her side and he is her main asset, especially as African-Americans love him. I do like Hillary too (especially after reading a biography about her) but I don't understand why she is so loathed by so many in the USA?

DH said that the WASP males, especially those in the South, must be wondering what on earth is happening.

Well I just don't know where to begin....

Aren't you arogant? What makes you think Republicans are so ill informed and stupid. I'm a Republican Ido watch Fox but also CNN. I read the Daily Telegraph, The times, and the Guardian everyday. The NY Times and the Wall St JOuranal as well. Maybe you've been listening to too much propaga

I'm a Republican and I support gay rights. I find it unfortunate that the majority of the Republican party is so narrow minded. I know alot of Republicans who want ights for gays.

I don't hate poor people. I dislike all the people who abuse the system. I don't think wealthy people are evil. I think people who work hard deserve to keep more of their money. I don't believe that the Government knows how to spend my money better.

You also seemed a bit misinformed about D&Cs. If abortion were to be outlawed that doesn't mean that D&C would not be available to women who need them for medical reasons such as an incomplete miscarriage. Nobody has ever suggested that that should be the case. I've never heard one person say that., ever

You are kidding about the Nine Month abortions right? You need to read up a bit sweetheart. The Clintons and Obama have all gone on record supporting this. They support this even when the life of the mother is not in danger. You do your reading.

I also think most Republicans recycle. Just because we don't all buy into glabal warming doesn't mean we don't believe in conservation and the need for clean air.

expatinengland · 05/12/2007 19:23

Gloria....Ozzy did say (I think) he was stoned or something when he bit that head off the bat..didn't he? Let's hope you're not into biting heads off...that is very bad and unstable, especially if you "take pleasure" in such things.

Paula, glad you are well read too. Do you live in the US or the UK? You are a rare Republican to suppport gay rights. I don't know of a single Republican who supports them except my brother, but he's gay....and I must add that even he felt he needed to vote his interests and now votes Democrat. Most of the Repubs I know think gays should be herded up and 'dealt with.' Actually most Repubs think gays are gay becase they choose to be gay...if they'd just pray properly they could snap out of it, right?

It's also time for gays to serve proudly in the US military, but the Repubs are against this so many folks said they were gay to get out of Bush's Army. It works every time. They were proud to serve, but after 3-4 tours in Iraq...they had had enough. The Clinton 'don't ask-don't tell' policy isn't good, but at least it wasn't like a gay witch hunt.

I also dislike people who abuse the system and who work hard deserve to keep more of their money. I'm no bleeding liberal and I've turned much more conservative since living in the UK. Girls getting pregnant so they can get a place to live...please...if they know they had to support those babies when they have them or they need to go be wards of the state if there are no family to help out....BTW, Clinton developed the Welfare Reform system in the US that needs to be introduced in the UK. The govt. should NOT be providing a place to live when a girl gets pregnant...her family should help or there should be limited programs, but an automatic place to live if you have a baby...Please.

I don't need to read up about the nine month abortions....YOU DO! Yes or No? Did you go to the wikipedia site and read about this? Religioustolerance.org is another good site that I've introduced many repubs to to educate themselves. Let me know of sites I should visit from your perspective. I don't think you did...please do this and we can discuss further. A good friend of mine lives in MS and was told by her gyn. while in labor that the Intact dilation and extraction procedure was the best decision to keep her womb intact, but that it was illegal in MS. The dr. helped her husband get her in the car to drive her to Atlanta, GA so she could have the procedure...bleeding all the way...there was already a 100% chance she was losing her child to hydrocephalus. Good old Repub Huckabee and others are against intact D & E's, D&Cs and even birth control. Are you also against birth control? Fine if you are...I say don't take it, but you have no right to tell me what to do with my body.

Oh..this is important...my friend and her husband were...good old Repubs...UNTIL this medical emergency happened to her, and she abhors Repubs telling her what she did was wrong. There was a 100% chance of death of her child, but now she has two other children. If the Republican freaks made this illegal in every state she would not have been allowed to have any more children.

Also, most Republicans in the US hate to recycle and Republican-heavy districts in the US often STILL don't even have a recycling program. THe Republican party needs YOU to stand up and tell them they should recycle.

I've got a big family and all kinds of people in all professions and I know many who refuse to recycle because liberals do that. They say the only way they will recycle is if their trash is weighed and they have to pay more for not sorting out the recycle stuff. They even throw their cans into the regular trash to 'spite liberals'. I'm adament about it and some family members are no longer welcome at my house unless they pitch in and recycle.
Ironically, the mostly-Democrat areas have had recycling for a long time.

If you live in the UK, it explains why you think you can be Republican and be for gay rights or care about the environment. Most religious freaks (not real religions folks, but the freaks, even think God made the Earth for mankind to do as they please.)

Also, keep in mind I believe I'm moderate. I would think too many bleeding liberals and social programs were wrong too...I just think the tides have shifted too conservatively and should be realigned in the opposite direction.

A moderate Republication will NOT win the primary, so we'll be left with a freak or a Democrat. I'll choose the 'lesser of two evils' and pick Democrat.

If you live in the US, where is that? I ask this because I'm going back to the US soon (can't take anymore of the UK witchdoctors...aka NHS...actually some doctors are great, but with the businesspeople making medical decisions..that is bad) and can't wait to get back to the US where women have more opportunities. Want DD to grow up knowing she has the opportunity to play sports if she wants or not. Such a breath of fresh air to see women's sports covered inthe US. My DH even misses his university's women's basketball stats.

If you've managed to read all this...here's a 'food for thought' item. I can't remember where I read this, but it's a good quote...something like..

Give me a person who has been a victim of crime, mugged, or something, and I'll show you a Republican. Or a person who has worked hard for what they have, and has NEVER had something real bad happen, and you'll get a Repub.

Give me a person who has been convicted of a crime they didn't commit, or somebody who finally did hit a rough spot in the road, or something like that, and I'll show you a Democrat.

My father was a lifelong Democrat and thought he had lots of $$$ (he did at one time), but he exhausted his life savings with Mom's breast cancer (she eventually died). He always thought people need to take care of themselves and he thought he did, but after having lots of treatments that the insurance wouldn't pay for (heck, the treatments probably aren't even available in the UK) he looked into govt. programs (yes, those horrible govt. handouts for the 'losers') and discovered programs that were free for medical research and some did help her live for 2-3 yrs.longer, but in the end she died. and dad lived on social security the rest of his life..yes..that's another nasty govt. program....'

Here's why I'm a (mostly) Democrat. Dad was born in the early 1900s and he remembers when we didn't have those wonderful (as you would think...awful, wastful govt. programs) such as OSHA, etc. In his day, you get your hand cut off at the lumbermill because the mill owner had crappy, rusty equipment...well tough...it's your problem if your family starves to death....Dad lived during the Great Depression and he always said there's nothing wrong with helping someone....to a certain extent.
Sorry, but that's why I'm a Democrat..mostly.

What made you a Republican?

WendyWeber · 05/12/2007 19:56

I am loving your posts

paulaplumpbottom · 05/12/2007 19:59

Funny, I don't come from a wealthy family and I had one of the most hellish childhoods that you could imagine. I have had some good luck in my life ( I was smart enough to get full scholarships to University and I met my husband who is a wonderful man) but I haven't always had it easy and I'm still a Republican.

I live n The UK

Most of my family are Republicans and they all recycle. I have not ever heard of anyone not doing it out of spite but in light of some of your post on here and on the other thread it is clear that you know some people with some pretty extreme views. These aren't the views and practices of most Republicans.

paulaplumpbottom · 05/12/2007 20:10

I'll also look out some websites if you want me to, but surely it is common knowledge that Bill Clinton while in offie Vetoed a bill banning Partial birth abortions not once but twice. That you dispute this shocks me.

expatinengland · 05/12/2007 20:23

No I'm not expatinscotland..just remembered she is from TX I believe. Hope all is well with her as haven't seen her post much. I haven't either, cause I'm too busy, but this political stuff burns me up.

Paula, I'm really glad your family recycles, but after Cheney made that comment about the liberals and recycling...don't remember exactly what it was...but interpreted as it's for sissies or something, they gave them free reign to do as they pleased. My family lives in IL, IN, KY, TN, CA, VA, NY, AL, FL, GA, SC, NC and MI. Pretty spread out, but a lot in the South. I'd say we're about 50-50 on the Republican-Democrat front. What's interesting is the ones that are Republican are either very wealthy or very poor. Also, the older they are, the more likely they are to be Democrat. The only scientific stat is the ones who go to church are overwhelmingly Repub, where the rest of us that go once-twice a year are more likely to be Dem.

Most Repubs believe the US is a 'Christian Nation'....Do you think this? They think all children should say 'under God' in the pledge.

What's interesting is that the UK is a religious nation, but isn't that religous. The US is more conservative, but there is separation between church and state. (Thank goodness.) This is what makes the US great is that it's supposed to be a place where you are free to worship the God/god of your choice, or you are able to not worship any God/god. Repubs want to bring prayer into the classroom (their own version of open prayer of course). Prayer is and has always been in the classroom. Anybody is able to pray anytime they want to themselves, but the Repubs want to force their own brand of religion on everybody else.

It's not an extreme view to be a Repub and not care about recycling...that's simply a normal Repub view. Of course not all Repubs are this way, and it's great that your family cares about it. Also, some of the Dems think this global warning is crap and that Gore is an idiot. That's why Gore should keep out of the Presidency and why Repubs that like to recycle should keep their mouths shut about it if they're running for office.

paulaplumpbottom · 05/12/2007 20:33

I think that its hard to ignore that the majority of Americans are Christians but I think what you want to ask is do I believe in separation of church and State. Of course I believe in it. I believe in it strongly. Religion has no place in Government.

Of course I don't think anyone should be forced to say the pledge. Again I don't know anyone who holds this extreme view.

I still think you are way off the mark with the recycling thing. Again I know nobody who does this.

expatinengland · 05/12/2007 20:44

Paula,

Of course Bill Clinton vetoed the 'partial birth abortion' bill twice and thank goodness. Now I KNOW you didn't read what I asked you to read about the 'Intact dilation & extraction' procedure. There is NO MEDICAL TERM 'partial birth abortion' that is a made up term to convince people of the horrors of this procedure and fill them with propaganda that millions of US women decide at the 9th month...on well..I'll go down to that abortion clinic and get me one of those there yonder abortions...what foolishness.

This is a medical procedure that is terrible and horrific and very rarely ever needs to be carried out, but in some rare instances it is the best procedure for a woman! HOW DARE YOU PLAY GOD AND DECIDE WHAT MEDICAL PROCEDURE IS BEST IN A RARE CIRCUMSTANCE!

There was supposedly a dr. in NJ that was carrying out these willy-nilly. If so, that should be 100% illegal and he and the women should be prosecuted. In the US, it is very hard to obtain an abortion in the second trimester (in some places...even for very valid reasons) and especially the third. However, if it's for a rare and awful medical condition, it is a procedure that often is the only one available to a woman in order to keep her womb viable and/or to avoid major surgery. In some states, women either have to die (if it comes to that) or are never able to have children again because they live in the wrong darn state. This is crazy.

Of course most women don't ever have to worry about this, but if a woman was ever in an awful situation (like my friend in MS), they should be allowed to get proper care.

Again, I hope you or no one you ever know has a hydrocephalus baby....of course you're free to make your decision...be it death..or never have any more children, but HOW DARE YOU THINK YOU SHOULD MAKE OTHER WOMEN'S DECISIONS. That's what makes me so angry about the Repubs.

There are Repub pharmacists that won't even fill birth control prescriptions and some repub doctors that won't prescribe birth control in the US now, and I say the pharmacist should lose their jobs if they won't fill prescriptions. This is crazy. What if a pharmacist sees a patient has a prescription for AIDS..what if they wanted to not fill it because they hate gays....if a person did hate gays, they would assume it was their fault they were ill of course.

What if a non-smoking pharmacist didn't want to fill something for a lung cancer customer..well that's stupid....Why then do the Repubs think its fine if pharmacist don't want to fill BC presccriptions? Repubs in the US THNK THIS IS FINE.

I'll never know if I would have turned Repub if I lived in the UK a long time since I'm moving back to the US soon. However, I do get more conservative, the longer I've resided abroad.

GloriaInEleusis · 05/12/2007 20:51

Oh good grief, I must learn to read the second half of screennames. My sympathetis paost earlier to Expat because I thought I was talking to Expatinscotland. Sorry.

paulaplumpbottom · 05/12/2007 21:38

I am a huge believer in Birth Control. Huge. But you can't dictate to people what they do and don't sell. A pharmacy is just like any other store.

If you want people to read your websites how about posting some links.

Piffle · 05/12/2007 21:50

Holy moly after all these years of GWB I think most would leap at the chance to vote Democrat.

GWB symbolises Republicans, like Thatcher symbolised the Tories.

Years in political exile one can only hope.

I care not a jot about their domestic policies (ok that is a lie but am too tired to argue properly) as am in the UK, but one rightly or wrongly assumes based on their complete fuck up of foreign policy, that it must be pretty heinous-
oh and the credit crunch business too..

paulaplumpbottom · 05/12/2007 21:54

Well it might suprise you to find out that Domestic policy is important to most Americans.

Piffle · 05/12/2007 22:03

responding to OP... which did not ask whether I was American or not.
