It's elsewhere on the web about Sweden.

oldstraighttrack · 26/11/2007 15:28

BB

It's in today's paper

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 15:32

Ok IF it is true (& I'm not asking Fran to confirm this) it could be seens as another piece of irrespopnsible journalism, might it not put Frans safety in jeopeardy by naming the country? or is this some thing they have got from the Trever McD thing tonight?

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 15:33

jeopardy sorry

oldstraighttrack · 26/11/2007 15:40

BB

don't know, guess we'll have to see. The trailer for tonight on the net says they followed her on her journey

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 15:44

Too true.

edam · 26/11/2007 16:05

Nice post, Mamazon. But if SS want to encourage people to be open about any problems, or to look at how past experience might affect their parenting, this is hardly the way to go about it.

One in four of us, SWs and doctors included, will suffer some form of mental health problem at some point in our lives.

The whole series of miscarriages of justice - elements of which were repeated in Fran's case - is likely to make people fearful of seeking help.

I still think a public inquiry into SS culture and practice, acknowledging where things have gone wrong, is needed to restore public confidence.

Heathcliffscathy · 26/11/2007 16:35

elizabethh I am very nearly (3 weeks to go ) a fully accredited psychotherapist having completed a five year training.

I am definitely not pro medical model although I'm less anti-psychiatry then when I first started training.

so in answer to your question, definitely not medical 'side' and although they are useful very wary of all mental illness 'diagnoses' including borderline personality disorder as I understand full well that they are labels attributed to clusters of symptoms and are culturally and sociologicaly informed. a mental health diagnosis can NEVER purport to be definitive in the way that a diagnosis of, for example, measles is.

Peachy · 26/11/2007 16:35

being debated on premier radio now

LittleBella · 26/11/2007 16:52

I agree with Edam, this case has sent a loud and clear message that asking for help is a really bad idea because once it's on record, the state might use untoward information against you in the future.

Not very constructive in terms of persusading people to seek help when they need it.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/11/2007 17:04

Fran - I wish you well and hope you continue to post on MN in future - for all manner of things, not just this particular subject

edam · 26/11/2007 17:04

And 'on record' is a really serious matter now they've brought in this massive government database with confidential details on all our children, for 350,000 people to access...

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 17:06

Absolutely LB & Edam & what a timebomb will THAT unleash when we have so many people struggling with mental health issues going unsupported through fear of asking for help/advice at the early stages when minor intervention/treatment might be all that's needed?

ruty · 26/11/2007 17:07

gosh how interesting soph - how did i miss you were doing that.

Do agree with edam's posts here though.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 26/11/2007 17:11

Don't get help for domestic violence because your own mental health will be scrutinised.
Don't get help for self-harm because then you will be suspected of wanting to harm your children.

The consequences are terrifying, aren't they?

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 17:16

Indeed Kathy the SS will have their hands full of cases of mothers really crackng up & families falling apart for the want of early intervention & support. And the tragic thing is it's the very children they are allegedly protecting that will suffer.

Heathcliffscathy · 26/11/2007 18:38

the whole nhs database thing is disastrous imo. nightmare unfolding.

hopefully someone will haul it up to europe on human rights grounds and put paid to the whole thing.

in domestic violence cases, you mean, Millie? that would be fine - a good thing even - if you could rely on SS to have some common sense and not start persecuting the family...

Elizabetth · 26/11/2007 18:41

Congratulations Sophable. Five years is a lot of work.

"so in answer to your question, definitely not medical 'side' and although they are useful very wary of all mental illness 'diagnoses' including borderline personality disorder as I understand full well that they are labels attributed to clusters of symptoms and are culturally and sociologicaly informed. a mental health diagnosis can NEVER purport to be definitive in the way that a diagnosis of, for example, measles is."

Jeez I wish social workers and people like David Southall took this attitude, it would have saved a lot of people a lot of pain.

FranLyon · 26/11/2007 18:50

Congratulations from me too Sophable - having access to psychotherapy rather than medication made all the difference for me.

Fran

LittleBella · 26/11/2007 18:56

God I didn't know that the police automatically report DV where there are children to the police.

In an ideal world (well, in an ideal world DV wouldn't happen, but YKWIM) this would be an excellent thing. However, in a world where people are terrified of SW's taking their children away, surely this just means that a woman is even less likely to report an attack by her partner?

LittleBella · 26/11/2007 18:57

sorry I meant the police report to ss, of course

Heathcliffscathy · 26/11/2007 19:05

thank you fran, and thank you elizabetth.

still feels a mountain to climb tbh, these three weeks feel the roughest in many ways.

can't think as far as christmas.

I have moments of doubt, of self-doubt and doubt about the process, but in my heart, i completely and totally believe in psychotherapy, and I think it is just horrendous that those that need it the most oftentimes those that can't begin to afford it have no access to it, or a palmed off with the 12 week course of CBT (i am NOT diminishing the importance of short term therapy nor of CBT as a model, however, the way it is being lauded as the best thing since sliced bread has an awful lot to do with the fact that it sits comfortably with the medical model of mind more pertinently it is CHEAP).

I'm really glad to hear that you've benefited from therapy Fran.
