Tidal surge in E Anglia & Kent - possibly 2-3 metres

That's the worst possibility but still, it's very flat on the E Anglian coast, a small surge would go quite a long way.

Hope everybody there is ready to go if they have to!

Well we haven't flooded. Am shattered though as had no sleep after police knocking on door and countless phone calls from relatives. Had cat basket sorted and so on ready to leave but we were all ok.
Had a look at the sea this morning, but stood well back. There are huge crashing waves and a lot of the defences have eroded. There are loads of familes down there taking photos as schools are shut. I have told ds14 not to go down there with his mates as I don't want them fooling around. He is trustworthy but you can never underestimate the danger of the sea. Best of luck to those of you further south. We are still in danger of the rivers but the worst had passed here.

Yes so far all the ones I have seen have been with adults. The sun is out now and the winds have died down but there is still a lot of water. I just hope everyone stays safe.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 09/11/2007 12:18

Glad to hear things ok on here. I live in Norwich by the River Wensum, and my parents live in Gt. Yarmouth, so we have been on guard.
Mum has taken all her things upstairs (well most things) and put sandbags at her door, Dad has put pieces of wood up around the gates. They live near to the Sea so was worried for them, they were going to stay with us last night but changed their mind.
Things seem to have eased off now and only a little water managed to reach close to my parents house.

wheelsonthebus · 09/11/2007 12:22

amazing pic wendy weber. really captures it all.

Dinosaur · 09/11/2007 12:24

wow at that picture, wendyweber! where was that taken, may I ask?

OrmIrian · 09/11/2007 12:33

Terrifying! So glad everyone is OK so far.

You have my sympathies as it's only a matter of time before it happens to us here

JARM · 09/11/2007 13:06

Well Felixstowe seems to be ok really bar the port closure.

Took a drive down the front and you can tell the waters were up over the road earlier this morning as there is half the shingle beach all over the road! Apparently some beach huts are moving about on the front!

Thankfully there isnt any rain to add to the chaos - i dread to think how bad it could have got.

Take care all of you xxx

Water still rising here. Our problem is that we live right on the Yare river (tidal from Yarmouth) but the precise bit we live on is a manmade deviation of about 400 yards, purpose built so that the people down here can have their boats moored directly outside their houses. It's too narrow for the volume of water at high tide anyway and this amount of water forced down it has caused a few problems.

I'm recharging my camera battery so I can take a picture. It's rather beautiful I must say if you ignore the drowned rats that have washed up. The cat's happy.

Dinosaur

Did you spot your own faux pas.....?

Southwold, lovely Suffolk seaside town.

Dinosaur · 09/11/2007 16:53
Blush
OrmIrian · 09/11/2007 16:58

I know no-one else will agree with me but I saw a drenched rat sitting in a stream on Newsround this morning and it upset me. Knowing that unlike badgers or foxes no-one is going to mount a rescue attempt. We have 2 pet rats and they are lovely. But I suspect I need to get a grip..... TOM approaching so likely to get angry or cry at anything

Katymac · 09/11/2007 17:33

We closed because I couldn't get any staff in

Don't like that photo of Southwold - we are going there at New Year

SweetFA · 09/11/2007 18:17

{{{Ormirian}}}

I felt sad about the rats too

Blandmum · 09/11/2007 18:28

That nice little rat probably carries Weils disease! which is very nasty and infects humans.

I've had pet rats, and they are very nice little animals. But wild rats? Vermin

Blandmum · 09/11/2007 18:29

Oh and they can swim and so don't really need to be rescued

SweetFA · 09/11/2007 18:43

Yes but MB they are drowning as the sewers are full. I know they are mucky little beasties but they still have feelings

Katymac · 09/11/2007 20:49

How are things this evening - are we all back to normal or are people still threatened?

ShowOfHands · 10/11/2007 09:29

We survived and the water has gone back down to a reasonable level. We do have a soggy garden though.

The cat has been in her element. The rats (wild, verminous rats, more like mangy dogs with tails) are currently stacked up by my patio door. Our lazy but faithful moggy has spent the night collecting them up and arranging them for us. I appreciate the effort but I have limited uses for a pile of dead rodents.

Didn't mean to offend with mention of rodents who have met their maker. Living where we do (Norfolk and on a river to boot) we see it most days. Foxes/badgers/rodents/rabbits etc.

Glad it's over and we're all dry with intact houses. I'll pack the canoes away for now.
